View Full Version : Do female gamers still exist?

I consider myself to be a moderately avid gamer.
I have been on a mission since early last summer to find local women who play arcade/console/PC/handheld video games so that I can share my interest with them. This is simply because I'm burned out on competing against guys. No sexism intended.
To date, I have found only 5. How pathetic!!!
On top of that, most of them are only into old school ATARI/NES/SNES.
Now, of course I will never forget my video game roots, which began with Coleco Vision (anyone remember that?)....but c'mon...technology has done a wondrous job on infusing itself into the gaming industry, so I appreciate the latest versions more so than the classic.
If you play, tell me what genre of games you enjoy and list some titles too!
BTW, I have this far-fetched theory formed as to why more men than women play, but I didn't feel like getting into that.

Yes an no. I love platform games, and live for my lovely emulators. However, I get bored with new games -very- quickly.
My mom was a badass at Ms. Pac Man.

Ahhhh, yessss....emulators helped me achieve completion of most NES games which were literally impossible to beat.
That's because of the handy save feature you can utilize at certain spots.
Being that the basis of survival for most NES games was dependent on the number of lives in possession, I would collect a shit ton of 'em, save, and finish my quest from there by using them as casualties until I won. It's sort of a cheat. But at least now I can claim that I beat those frusturating NES games after a decade and a half of attempting! Whew happppy
Do you think your loss of interest has anything to do with being 100% T? Don't take this the wrong way (cause there's nothing wrong with it)...could it be a lack of attention span for that sort of entertainment?

Um, well, I find Diablo two mildly addicting, as well as some final fantasies that kept my attention for awhile. Other than that, not really, but that's probably just because I haven't been exposed.
Oh yeah, and I play Scrabble online a lot. :-P

And it could be.. I tend to start projects and never finish them, too. Your'e right, I'm completely lacking in attention span :D.

i don't play a lot of games, but i get obsessed w/ some of them. i have always loved the zelda games (especially ocarina of time for N64). oh yeah, i really liked myst when that first came out, but i never played any of the sequel games. my most recent obsession is the sims...i don't really care about the people, i just like building the houses. i also have a gameboy advance, but i only play super mario 2 and tetris on it. super mario 2 is my favorite game of all time. i don't even really like the other mario games--just that one.

*grin* I love to game. I play roguelikes and PC games. I don't delve into console games anymore -- too much of a hassle.
Yes, I am addicted to video games but no I don't play multiplayer and I don't have a cable modem.
So far, my favorite rogue like is ADOM. ADOM will beat the crap out of any PC rpg with graphics so *raspberries*.

I've heard little about the CRPG Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM).
Was it really programmed by one person?
I recently added this cause I forgot to mention something funny:
There are times, such as when I was reading your post, when I think I'm dyslexic.
I kept reading, "ROUGE like" and I was thinking to myself, wtf? What do cosmetics have to do with a game genre? It just didn't click cause I'm such a dork <_<

I'm somewhere between the 1st and 2nd choice. I definetely don't consider myself a gamer, but that doesn't mean I have to have nothing else to do to enjoy them. I play stuff like civilization and rise of nations on the computer sometimes. I like sim-type games, but got bored with the sims (too close to reality-- I get tired of leading my little person to the bathroom to take a shower and pee every "day"). I don't like "action/shooter" games on the computer, but do with console games. However I just play whatever my friends happen to be into at the time because I don't own anything above a snes, and I only have the mario game series anymore.
heh. i still play old NES. the only computer games i've gotten into are sim city & the sims... but i go in spurts with both of them. i like sim city better, though.

I'd still play old NES but none of them work right anymore. I can't take the system shutting down by itself when I'm in the middle of a game, or spending 20 minutes just to get the game in "just right"! I have three, they all have issues so I quit using them.

What are you into?
Oh, geez, lots!!
In general, I like almost anything but the sports genre. I play RPG's in waves. Some months I play them, others I don't.
They include and definitely are not limited to:
House of the Dead; the only game in which I solely like the arcade version. I like both console and arcade versions on the other games I play.
On PC- City of Heroes, most of the Tom Clancy inspired games (Rainbow Six, Rogue Spear, Harpoon, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell etc.), Morrowind, Vice City, Magic: The Gathering, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Alien vs. Predator
The Sims........and I agree that it's alot more fun to build the houses than take care of your people. I kill them off. Plus, the variety for methods of death is fascinating!
****Want a cheat code for damn near infinite money? CTRL + SHIFT + C; type "rosebud" in field; gives you 1,000 Simoleans. Keep typing ;!;!;! repeatedly after rosebud, and you will bank another 1,000 for each set of ;!'s****
As for consoles- I prefer PS2. I've dabbled in other consoles though.
BloodRayne, Onimusha, Medal of Honor, Disruptor, Twisted Metal, Tekken, Cardinal Syn, Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, N2O (nitrous oxide), Psi-Ops, Metal Gear Solid, Time Crisis, Devil May Cry, Castlevania, Max Payne, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ratchet & Clank, Soul Caliber, Soul Reaver, Ghost in the Shell, Crash Bandicoot, Tenchu Stealth Assasins, Deus Ex, Guilty Gear......
Whew

If you miss it enough, go garage selling. In my experience, if you plunk down no more than 5 bucks you will have an NES in perfect working order, and a library of games to complement it.

I agree, I always had a lot more fun making the houses than providing guidance for my sims. Sometimes it was a bit amusing to put a bunch in a house together and let them do their own thing. It's amazing how often they fall asleep on the lawn in a pool of their pee. I always use the cheats now because I just don't have the patience with the repetition required to earn money.

Big gamer. I play computer games instead of watching TV.
Platform:
PC based only. I don't have a problem with the other formats; I just don't see the point when the PC games are keeping me entertained. I still have some old DOS based games that I like.
Genres:
I like most FPS, RPG, Card, casino, and computerized board games.
I like some Car, Sim, Strategy, third person shooters and sports games.
Can anyone recommend a good Space Based RPG?
I liked Starflight, Sentential Worlds, Star Control and Freelancer, but I’m having trouble finding others like these. Most seem more like strategy based where you build a military force and invade everyone. I like this type too, but sometimes I just want to pound everything and I don’t want to lead a force.

That's about all that's been out recently as far as I know. The last good space RPG was Earth & Beyond by Westwood. It was great when I played the beta and later the demo, but it didn't sell well for some reason.

Rosebud is my favorite cheat. I don't even know how people play the game without it! Maybe I should go cold turkey for awhile and try to play the game without cheats. It would be much tougher. BTW, I also love to watch my sims die too. It's the 2nd best part of the game, other than building houses. :D

I do like sims, I used to develop elaborate plots among the people of the neighborhood. Like one guy makes all the female sims in the other houses fall in love with him, then they make everyone die in their respective homes and go to live with new guy who gets all the money...etc, etc. I did the rosebud cheat for a little while then it became too boring and easy. I have to agree that making the houses is the best part, I like to recreate houses from my distant memory.

Any of you Sim players ever concocted a purple potion at the chemical lab station and had your sim drink it? When they turn into a monster, allow them to paint on your easel. The value of the monster's child-like paintings goes well beyond what any normal sim could create.
Rosebud is my favorite cheat. I don't even know how people play the game without it!
There are so many loopholes that I rarely use cheats. There used to be a bland floral rug that you could DL and when you bought it, the resell value would drastically rise the longer you had it. If I remember right, the rug cost 250 Simoleans, and could be sold for 2,000 the next day and 4,000 the day after. :o

I love Baldur's Gate and NeverWinter Nights!
I used to play Unreal Tournament a lot with my colleagues at my last job, though I've never heard of any other girls playing UT. But then again, I was the only girl in my department, so how could I know?
Sims...I don't like it. I tend to think it's boring enough to take care of my own life, so I don't feel like looking after cyber-people too.
And well, I was a software tester, so of course I have tested various small games. Hard work, that! :D

These days though I play pvp roleplay games, not that I'm an ace pvp'er I just enjoy having a go. Tend to have a thing about making a friend out of those that pk me with any kind of manners though :)

I've been playing video games since the tender age of four. I like pretty much all genres except football games... adventure games (anything by Lucasarts or Sierra) were my first love, but I like console RPGs, shooters (Half-Life, CS, Duke Nukem... 3D!), RTS (Warcraft III took over my life for a good year and a half), and so-called "girl games" like the Sims 2, Harvest Moon, and the Final Fantasy series. In addition, as of next Tuesday I'll be neck-deep into World of Warcraft.
I don't personally know any hardcore female gamers-- I've only met a few whose experience was limited to one of the Final Fantasies and lots of the Sims.

I like The Sims and Harvest Moon (when they first came out) so I'm confused as towho I should be offended at, in a very small amount ;).
There are gamers and then there aren't; some people value different genres and different social standards when choosing to play.

Not quite sure why you'd take offense to that. I said "so-called 'girl games'", which I hoped would imply that there's nothing inherently girly about the games but that they tend to be stigmatized as such because they are genres most frequently played by females. *I'M* female, *I* play them, *I* get annoyed when I get bemused looks from guys when I dare to purchase the latest iteration of The Sims in a game store-- whether it's true or not, people assume it's the only thing you play.

I'm a female gamer, one of roughly four I know, including my sibling.
I like pretty much all genres except for first-person shooters, racing and football games.
I dressed up as Red XIII once at a camp, and only a few guys knew who I was. Every single girl thought I was a very badly made cat, when, in fact, I was a very badly made escaped genetic experiment, as I tried to convey to them. Without much luck, I might add.

I love games like Tetris, Literati (Yahoo's online version of Scrabble), and Tangleword (an online version of Boggle).
I like The Sims because you can design and build dwellings. . . the architecture aspect of it's really fun, however, the tasks that the Sims must do every day (eat, bathe, clean) are pretty boring.

I would be a gamer if I had proper incentive, however, I always feel as though the game is needy, if I were to not play it it would eat me. Most illogical. But i'm really bad at gameing unless it is really interesting RPG, WoW style and such. The one time I played the sims I was so bad at it. Just couldn't get into the drift. Hard enough to function in the real world.
