Has anybody read these books? I think they could be condensed to 1/10th their size, probably less. Greene's analogies to every concept are too long winded, as if he is attempting to smear an otherwise crisp understanding for the sake of showing off his ability to write to a general audience. I had more tolerance for it reading Elegant Universe, but the appeals to the Simpsons and X-files in Fabric of the Cosmos to over explain everything tiny detail has me groaning, both for the concepts it successfully muddles and the implication the reader needs everything related to a popular TV program in order to understand scientific ideas.

I agree. Have you seen my Biology text book? The people writing it love to hear themselves talk.

I got so excited about string theory after The Elegant Universe!! I haven't read the book, but I watched the Nova special on my computer. Nova breaks it down so even people without any background can understand this obscure theory. Check it out,
