Anyone have some really good music composing software and/or some good books on music theory?

I have a pirated copy of Finale 2003, but Finale 2004 is quite a bit better, if anyone has it. If you have anything as good or better, please let me know.

Don't solicit or offer anything illegal on a public forum -- you jeopardize the existence of the forum. Finale is very expensive software, and this increases the danger.

Seriously. Come and get me feds! It's ridiculous to pay $500-$600 for about 100 mb of software.

*shrug* it's not uncommon to get a cease and desist letter from a lawyer.

I've heard good things about Max/msp
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max

it looks like you can download a demo of it here:
http://www.cycling74.com/products/dlmaxmspwin.html

it is more for electronica type stuff though.

Propellerhead's Reason 2[.5] is a nice software synth-studio. You can peep here, demo included: http://www.propellerhead.se/products/reason/index.cfm?fuseaction=mainframe

I'll second that. Some of my friends make music and they like Reason very much.

I'll third the nod for Propellerhead. Unusually high on the immediate-gratification scale for the cost. But that's not exactly composer software...

Your college library will likely have more music theory books than you can handle, if you're interested in that direction.
