Wasn't it an intentional "roast" of sorts?

I transcribed this in the Colbert Report thread, I think it was last week. So, if any wants to read it, it's there.

Yes. But making fun of Hugh Hefner for being old and horny is one thing. The "roasts" against the president were all about incredibly serious issues and cut right to the core of him and his presidency. Colbert basically gave the president a big fuck you right to his face in front of the entire country and Bush could do nothing but grin and take it.

To me the brilliance lies in that Colbert has never broken character. Stewart will have his asides to let us know we're all still in on the joke, but Colbert has taken the one note joke so far past the line that it's now sustainable.

Is there a Quicktime version ?

It looks funny based on some of the deleted remarks.

Colbert cracks me up. We watched #1 and #2 in the lab the other day. I thought we were going to have to resuscitate our post-doc. And, amazingly enough, my uber-conservative parents also found it entertaining. Heh heh.

I dont know youve heard but theres been controversy because the story was not reported by any of the mainstream news the next day. Articles about the dinner never even mentioned colbert's name simply focusing on the unfunny skit with bush and his impersonator. After being criticized for simply ignoring a significant story (someone laying it out right to bush's face) the media responded but saying it simply was not funny.

I agree he's become this character, I have no clue what the real Colbert is even like.
