View Full Version : Carolinas Meetup?

Anyone interested? :)

If we collect near Charlotte, we can play at the NASCAR Speedpark, or something.

BTW, I am not particular about meeting in/around Charlotte. It just seems like a central location for the Carolinas in general.

Greensboro, RTP, Columbia, Myrtle Beach, Huntington Island--these are all fine too.

Huntington Island? Bring a picnic and your dogs?

I might consider it.

I'm in Upstate SC, so someplace within the Charlotte/Columbia/Asheville radius would be easiest for me to drive out to, but anywhere within 4 or so hours like Huntington Island/Greensboro is possible.

I'm in NC right now, and I'll be here for another 10 days. I would suggest the North Carolina Zoo (in Asheboro) as being the ideal meetup place. That said, I probably wouldn't go anyway. The idea of meeting people is anathema to my senses of introversion and misanthropy.

What if we just let you sit in the corner and look at us all contemptuously without saying a word? ;)

Who says I won't? It might be fun to observe a meetup unbeknownst to the meetuppers.

By the way, guys, what do you think of a magic marker mustache along with the tattoo? Oh, and somebody still needs to bring the duct tape just in case! ;)

So, is anyone game for the NC Zoo next Saturday? PM me, if so.

dune_E, let me know if that is within your driving comfort. It's closer to Charlotte than Greensboro is, IIRC. You just take 49 unti you get bored (typically Ashboro), then follow the signs.

(I was originally going to suggest meeting at a museum/aquarium/zoo. I really like the Durham giant bug zoo and the Columbia museum.)

Is this meeting people thing actually happening?

I'm not sure if I'm coming or not. It's far away, I'm busy...and also I'm feeling a little shy. Maybe I'll bring an extravert with me so that if you people are scary, I can throw him at your heads and run away.

I'll be in GSO this coming weekend, so Asheboro and Durham are both quite doable for me. I'd prefer not to go to Charlotte, as I was just there last weekend and it stresses me out because I know how to get to Myers Park Presbyterian and that's about it.

Okay!!! We're on!

Where:
Zoo, Junction Plaza. This is in the center of the park, near the aviary.

When:
Saturday, 20 May, 2006
11:30-12:30.
I'll make a point of staying there the whole time, so we can trickle in. Yeah, this is the peak of lunch. Yeah, it will be a zoo of kids. We can handle it!

What to look for:
I will be sure to wear something more noticable than my usual hat and blue toenail polish. Will post details HERE!

Don't be shy!

Consider that at most we're only about 4% of the population.
You're more likely to have hallucinigenic mushrooms growing in your front lawn (apparently 1 in 10 lawns do) than to be INTP.

Yeah, I totally looked at the TIME and not the PLACE for this meetup. I'm sorry ya'll. I'm a total flake. I was at the zoo all day. What were you guys wearing?

rivercrow
21 May 2006, 01:49 AM
We missed everyone!

We ran late (got there at 11:45). The kahuna head needed a straw to inflate, and the zoo doesn't sell drinks with straws. Go figure.

We tied the head to the umbrella we took over. I had worn my INTP t-shirt and crow visor and wandered around the place. Found out it was Caterpiller Employee Appreciation Day, so tons of people!

Next time we do this, we change 2 things:
1-Pick a smaller place. For example, the gift shop at the Raleigh Art Museum.
2-Exchange cell phone numbers.

We did roam the zoo and took lots of pictures with the camera. Eileen, you'll be happy to know we went and looked at the monkeys. Did anyone else see all the tadpoles in the lion enclosure? Must have been several hundred.

If anyone else went, sorry we all missed each other and hope you did have fun at the zoo. It was a beautiful day.

I'm always looking for an excuse to go to Raleigh-Durham for the museums, which is closer to your neck of the woods. Next time I'm ready for a road trip, I'll drop you a line.

If you come to Charlotte, let me know. We can meet somewhere easy to get to. (Not the intersection of Queens, Queens, and West Queens!)

the patas monkeys were so fun to watch. the young ones were very playful.

i got a good couple of pictures (except for the damn reflection on the glass) of one of the gorillas, also. i wanted to smack some people for banging on the glass, though. if it's kids, parents should be monitoring them and making them stop. if it's parents, they need to be punched.

today did make me realize how much small children in large numbers irritate me. i could never, ever teach elementary school.

there are plenty of great museums in the triangle area.

There were a couple girl/boy scout troops there as well. Yes. Lots of kids.

They stayed out of my way. I had the monopod in hand, a crow visor with big googlie eyes over my big-brimmed hat, and a slightly maniacal grin. I noticed a lot of them looked from the monopod to the hat to the blue crow toes and stepped out of the way. :D

Did you see someone running around in a red hawaiian shirt with orange flowers on it and carrying a camera?

No. Alas. There were toooooo many people there. Next time we should definitely exchange cell phone numbers (although actually, my cell phone wasn't working at the zoo).

Fun potentials for next time:

Morehead Planetarium (Chapel Hill)
Ackland Art Museum (Chapel Hill)
Museum of Life and Science (Durham)
Duke University Museum of Art (Durham)
Touchable Art Gallery (Durham)
Museum of Art (Raleigh)
Museum of Natural Sciences (Raleigh)
Museum of History (Raleigh)
Exploris (Raleigh)
Natural Science Center (Greensboro)

And a shitload of stuff in Charlotte (*scratches hives*) and probably more in Orange County.

Duke also has a primate center, but I think you have to make an appointment to visit. Morgan and Mark (the two guys I went to the zoo with) were talking about doing that sometime this summer.

There will also be the Festival at the Eno River sometime this summer (in Orange Co) but that tends to be mostly attended by hippies. I'll probably go, though, and visit my hippie friends.

Oh, oh!!!! We should go to the Triangle Association for Scientific Creationism! It's in Raleigh!

Hm, INTP's motivated to do something E? That's a scary thought...LOL...

Sure, I'd still be interested. Can we agree on a place and time? Rivercrow's suggestion of the Museum in Raleigh is still good or we can try the Zoo again. I can wear a really loud Hawaiian shirt or something distinctive to make it easier to pick out in a crowd. I'll have to search through my wardrobe to see what I have.

I think we should try again before school starts. (I need to register for that required Rhetorical Theory class, too! eek!)

An eatery sounds good. As mentioned, I pack GAMES in the car--I think Set, Quiddler, Scrabble, Yatzhee, Munchkin with about 3 expansion packs, and probably a deck of playing cards as well.

How MANY people might be interested and WHERE are you? I am willing to travel, if there are more of us someplace else.

I am, as mentioned, in Charlotte. Concord Mills Mall has a bunch of stuff, and it is on I-85 just North of Charlotte. If Charlotte gives you hives, this will keep you out of the Queen City altogether.

We have Lessons Learned too, so this one should work better.

Whale bones is the state science museum in Raleigh? There's also the one in Durham with a butterfly conservatory. The Raleigh one's free admission, though, so that is a plus. Greensboro has a passable nature science center. And Charlotte has Discovery Place. As you can see I am a bit of a science museum buff.

Been to all of them! I love the Raleigh museum with the whale bones. Love the state art museum, too. (I should have taken that job in Raleigh!)

I'm a natural museum and aquarium nut. Can do without the space stuff--yeah, it's cool, but it doesn't get me excited the same way fish or fossils or art does.

We have close personal ties to the Gso Nature Center.

Anyone interested in trying to meet this Saturday at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences?

There is a special photography exhibit from the UK, Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2005 (http://www.naturalsciences.org/exhibits/special_exhibits.html). So not all just whale bones.

If anyone's interested, PM me and let's exchange cell phone numbers. Otherwise, we can meet around 11 AM under the whale bones. (Yes, AM, in the morning. Thanks, MDBA!)
