I didn't know David Sedaris did stand-up... His books are great though.

I've always thought Stand-Up a degenerate art-form, but Denis Leary's good. And if I'd been alive in the middle 20th century in Britain: I'd have liked the great Max Miller. His songs are still funny. :D It's difficult to imagine how he got away with the stuff he said back then.

I just watched (again) Comdy Central's 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time (or something like that), so I've got too many in my head to list. I know I'm not a big fan of Lewis Black though. And it seems like Colin Quinn mangles half the jokes he's trying to tell. I have to reconstruct them in my head before I find them funny, which they usually are.

We go to a couple local comedy clubs every few weeks. I never remember the names of the comics, but we always have a good time, even on amateur nights.

Let's not forget the classics: Bill Cosby and Bob Newhart, both of whom are still working and still funny.

My favorite comedian whose delivery is unique and intelligent but very funny is Eddie Izzard. His best stand-up on DVD is "Dressed to Kill" and "Circle".

I like Jay Mohr because he is simply an unapologetic asshole. He's also great when he fills in for Jim Rome on the radio.

I can't believe no one else has mentioned George Carlin!? I also think Eddie Murphy's Delirious (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085474/) is hilarious!

He's my favourite. He's probably the only stand-up comic I can believe in - other than Mitch Hedberg - the others are all very funny, but the constant exageration kind of suspends my disbelief -nobody can be that angry. Ricky is more honest.

Any list that omitts Red Foxx, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawerence is incomplete, period  . Bill Cosby belongs. Not one Lenny Bruce mention  ?

As previously mentioned George Carlin is "the man", Lewis Black and Jay Mohr get a nod from me as well. Un-previously mentioned Dane Cook is pretty wild too!

Al Franken is not considered stand-up but I like his satirical comedy. Also, Kevin Smith did "An Evening with Kevin Smith" that was absolutely hilarious!

Jonathan Winters, Woody Allen, Jim Gaffigan, Martin Short, Stephen Wright, Jerry Seinfeld and Richard Pryor are the biggies that spring to mind first. I like Dana Carvey, Eddie Izzard, Lily Tomlin, Red Foxx, Chris Rock, John Cleese, Sam Kinison ( sp? ) and others as well. Many of the names mentioned in this thread are unfamiliar to me. I will try to check them out. Steve Martin was great in his day. Maybe he still is if you see him as a stand up vs. an actor.

i'm influenced by my recent viewing, but...

Flight of the Concordes. They were extremely talented - but it wasn't conventional stand-up.

But as for conventional stand-up, Robin Harris.

Yeah, that's what I say about Dave Chapelle. I don't get the appeal. Also, Robin Williams? I find him completely exhausting. I can't keep up with him.

My favorites are Stella and David Cross.

I was fortunate enough to see Mitch Hedberg here in Houston a few years ago. He was wildly talented and hilarious. I read the Entertainment Weekly article after he passed away. Apparently, he had signed a sitcom deal, but the program never came to fruition -- I wonder if his unique brand of humor would have found the wide audience he deserved, or if he would have only kept his cult following.

Mitch Hedberg's CDs are very funny, but nothing compares to seeing him perform. I don't own it yet, but there's a CD/DVD pack put out by Comedy Central entitled "Mitch All Together." If you can find any of his work, go check it out.

You've got to be kidding me?!? How anyone thinks he's funny is beyond my comprehension. he's very funny in movies and tv, but his stand-up sucks. it's simple and incoherent at times.

The first week Dave Chapelle's Show was on the air, his show was number one. His contract was extended twice because of his popularity. I can't say anything about his stand up skills though because I haven't seen any.

Agreed! Gotta bring this thread back in the wake of Pryor's passing. There are so many I can think of. DL Hugley, Ray Romano, Damon Wayans are comics who were a cut above on stage and got shows. Also like Dennis Miller Garry Shandling, Joan Rivers, Hicks, Kinison and Carlin, no surprises there. I don't know how well known Brian Reagan and Eddie Griffin are but these guys have hours and hours or A-material.

If you ever get to see Brian Posehn, (who was on Just Shoot Me, the mail clerk I believe), Roger Rittenhouse, (missing part of one arm, has a hook) or Brian Holtzman, (angry NY comic, now working out of The Store), Louis Johnson Jr, (Showtime Funniest Person of the Year winner) they're hilarious.

There are two comedians that always stick out in my head as just being complete packages on stage. Delivery, material, timing, ability to riff, hold an audience, you name it but never got the household recognition. One was Warren Thomas, who was a past San Francisco Comedy Competition winner, which at the time was THE BIGGEST event for a comedian. No one commanded respect and laughter from a live audience. Phenominal stage presence. He was on one of those HBO's Young Comedian Specials, and I saw him on a few other shows doing stand up, but I have to admit, you'd never get a sense of the way this guy could take over a room. He was always referred to as "the comic's comic" Unfortunately, Warren died back in September.

The other is Sheryl Underwood. I don't know if she's like Bernie Mac where for the longest no one could find a vehicle for him to take him wide. She's really raw but like Pryor or Murphy, she's on point that she's not considered vugar. I think she's hosting BET Comic View, which I can't say I've seen in quite some time. While it's be nice to see her really blow up, I hope it's not at the expense of her creative freedom.

Also, Ellen Degeneres blows, if you like Dane Cook I don't think you're actually allowed to be here.
