this is my response to Bear's thread:

my first experience with dxm was 60 robitussin gelcaplets (900 mg). the drug was intense. i'm a strong I, but it turned me into an extremely strong E. i talked entirely in ebonics for around 3 hours. i called everyone in my phonebook. i walked around downtown (my motor skills weren't the least bit impaired) and chatted with everyone that i came across. only when i looked at my reflection in a shop window and saw the size of my pupils did i realize just how fucked up i was... my skin was hot & red... like a sunburn... i didn't hallucinate at all... in fact, i've never been able to hallucinate with any of the so called hallucinogens (i've tried 900 mg's of dxm, 24 pills of dramamine, and 4 grams of shrooms - i seem to be oblivious, but i can readily have open eye hallucinations without drugs [chronic awareness duing sleep paralysis, near complete command of lucid dreams, etc.])

dxm is one of the better over the counter products... stay the hell away from dramamine. i took those 24 pills two days ago and i'm still feeling the negative side effects (seemingly reduced proprioception, balance, and vision)

I told him before in a thread that he should think more before posting. Not long after, a member alerted us that he was repeatedly "quoting" a photo just for "farts and giggles." If this were isolated, I can understand people feeling that we were being draconian. But its a typical sort of post for him.

If he feels that this is all he has to contribute to the board then I am quite serious, and not just being sarcastic.

What is the purpose of Purgatory?

To quarantine posters who start threads about rubbing shit through their hair.

I don't get how giving further proof of your ban-worthiness is in any way productive or helpful to your cause.

What are you hoping to accomplish? The mods and admins continuing to allow you to post at all, after insulting them in this way makes them look like patient teddy bears and makes you look like an utter jerk, and worse, a spoiled brat.

When you are in any group voluntarily and sometimes involuntarily, the guys at the top get to make the rules and call the shots. It's just how life works. You want to be there (or you want to have the least miserable time there, if you have no choice) you play ball. You want kicked out or to be made miserable, you tick people off. Not a complex concept.

Going out in a blaze of glory loses it's value when you are being allowed the glory through the magnanimity of the powers that be. But whatever melts your butter . . .

I fail to see what these posters have done that is so terrible. The criteria or reasons posted by Claverhouse can only lead me to one conclusion, they were banned or confined purely and simply because they were not liked by those in power or did not show enough respect.

This tells me that those in power here are expecting a lot of non INTPs on this site as isn't it within the bounds of the profile to be anti authority?

Claverhouse do you not have varying levels of contempt for present quthority on England and are therefore guilty of similar behaviour just perhaps quieter?

As for posting style or fluff, well I can only say that if we got rid of the personal things in the posts or style of posts then there would be less point joining this site than a reference library. The information here is personal opinion and is always flavoured with the personality of the poster. Perhaps some people cannot read the person behind the post but I do not see this as a problem with the person that needs addressing but more a problem with the reader who needs to learn how to see all the information contained within the post.

I am disappointed in this manouver, though I realise my opinion carries as little weight as a tic, and feel that the ruling fails both the membership and those who instigated the manouver.

It also makes me wonder how long it will be until myself or Moridin are banned because we are not necessarily the popular ones and can make posts which are not entirely lucid and correct. Should that day come then I put it to you that you are only admitting your own faliures to remove these kinds of people.

Yes, he is passive-aggressive and I am more in your face. If the administrators do not like me that is not my problem. If most of the member think I post like one over the eight and do not like me, I will go. I see myself as a man of principal and I do not want to be sent to Coventry.

Kuranes, Dr. Haight, and Biff seem to make good mods. They all seem to be of good heart and very open and straightforward in their communications. I find Claverhouse to come across as openly belligerent and disdainful in the vast majority of his posts. He does come across as passive-aggressive in his moderating style. Before coffeezombie became a mod he could also be classified as an aggressive poster who seemed unable to keep personal feelings at bay in the midst of debate. I stated at the time it was because of these qualities that he didnt seem like ideal mod material. Since becoming a mod he hasnt exhibited these qualities openly on the forum. However from what Ive been able to garner, behind closed door he is still the same in this regard.

This is the kind of behavior that marks you for purgatory. It's not something anybody thinks is particularily clever or interesting to read, and clever and interesting people are who us INTP's like being around. It's what we rely on this forum to supply us with.

Not trying to change the decision. Just a question. Through conversation with a couple mods, I was told that unlike the other Purgatorians I was banished not for a tendency to post fluff but because of aggression on my part towards a certain member with one of the worst tendencies to post fluff. I find there are many members guilty of the same offense as myself (including the mods right now with their ban). Have I not been singled out in this regard?

You really should just step off. When I called your 135+ IQ into question and cited your participation here as indicative of something contrary to that, your defense was that you didn't put any thought into your posts because you just don't care. If that's true, then we have discovered a major difference between you and me and a probable cause for why you're confined to Purgatory and I am not. Trolls spam the board with mindless crap. I do not. While I am sometimes harsh and am not afraid to push right through comfort zone boundaries, I always think about what I'm posting and try ensure that my presence here is an overall positive gain for INTPc. When I advised you to STFU in that recent post, it wasn't some thoughtless attack. It was good advice, but you didn't take it. And now you're stuck here for a while. Think before you post, and maybe you won't be so mystified about how things play out after you post. Act like you give a shit about this virtual community in which you have decided to participate. I might be an arrogant ass, but at least I have something to contribute here. Do you? Oh wow, I actually agree with Hustler. I am speechless.

I am not trying to compare my stature on this site to that of Hustlers. However, I can honestly say this is exactly how I feel about myself and my intentions and is why I found my banishments most surprising and unjust. I assumed this was apparent, but to certain mods it apparently isnt. Thats the main point I believe those mods who obviously dont, should understand. Thats all.

**** another rant diary*****

Chapter I , a peak at the future ?

So after the commitee was formed in secret, the mock executions were held. Some members were so appalled they left on their own.

Now why was this committee formed?

I think the anwser is that the committee will ballot the new members in the future and tries to get get rid off current members who are dishonorable.

All within the rules OC with purgatory, being like a suspension from your profession as e.g. a doctor or a laywer. This is very corporate/university thinking which leads me to another assumption.

Clearly overwhelmed by the popularity off the INTPc forum its is my idea that certain members aim for a professional board, yes thats a paid board. OC that means the content should be worthy for people/members to pay for. Or on second thought they could attract a sponsor who also needs some prove of professionalism before donating any sums of sponsorship money.

To give INTPc a certain status board members are chosen on actual professional experience and degrees:Take for example Dr. Haight, clearly worthy of being a board member. Of the others I dont know but Hustler must have some degree since he gives out 'free' advice.

Anyway this is of course highly speculative and the future of INTPc depends on and only on the owner of the server and he/she alone will make that decision like a small cattle farmer with attractive cows and land selling out to a gaint milk factory :), a warm welcome to capitalism/corporatism and a more of the same culture.

So..thats my view

Don't know if this is the right place for this passing thought, but here goes.

The main problem I see is that people forget that there are human beings at the other end of these screen names. You are not debating with an AI program. A little mutual respect can go a long way.

That's not aimed at anyone in particular as I am usually oblivious to the moderation and bannings that go on.

ApeTheDog
28 May 2006, 06:28 PM
The bottom line is that this is a public forum, and that whilst some kinds of behavior may not actually be breaking any rules - there is a set of rules that isn't written down, and which is the most important one of all: the majority rules.

The majority rules. And if the majority doesn't think it's acceptable to treat their forum as a doormat, then you can be on the right line of the 'law' as much as you want, if 98% of all people think you're irritating - then by that very virtue you are going to be put in purgatory.

It's not fair. But then that's how social settings work. If you walk into a bar, you have to adapt to the majority rule there as well. You don't complain about the cigarette smoke. You don't start acting like a moron. You comply, or you get thrown out - because you are just one person, and this is their place. Their place by virtue of the majority rule.

And this is why people here have to adapt to some strict, unwritten rules such as: "don't post crap", "don't be irritating", "don't start a whole lot of useless threads".

And you can complain that what a useless thread is isn't written down, and that these rules are fuzzy - they are. But they are still in effect.

These 8 people have been irritating the majority of people on the forum - and they've been silent for a long time. And we, as moderators, don't always know how to deal with people who irritate others, but don't appear to be breaking any rules, either. At least, I don't.

Except for the majority rule. That is my new credo from now on. If something is going to irritate most of the people here, it's not allowed. And it's my job to stop it.

When I said you were "improving" it was an ironic comment on how you're starting to show you can be serious when you are so inclined. I've always given you credit for intelligence, if not a great sense of humor. I assume that you know that you're being irritating. And enjoy the fact that the fluff issue is a "fuzzy" one. But you've made it clear in the thread that you believe you should have gotten a formally delivered "warning" vs. the post I made to you, telling you to think more before posting.

You trash Clave as a Mod in various posts, some of which I see deleted now, and yet:

http://forums.intpcentral.com/showpost.php?p=313179&postcount=5

I suppose I am now the new "villain" in your life, having failed to warn poor innocent little Bob Zhang properly. Of course, you've also made it clear that you feel my opinion about "frivolous posts" to be "irrelevant". No, no, you say, only the board ITSELF can define the issue. Not the MGT. What the heck would THEY have to say about it?

By your own admission 70% of your posts are debatable.

http://forums.intpcentral.com/showpost.php?p=317695&postcount=150

I would argue for a higher number, but whatever. I've always encouraged clever banter, and a judicious amount of humor. And there are many "irreverent" posters who the group did not pick out to be on this list. That's right, it wasn't purely a whim of Kuranes that put you here.

I saw a pic of a little girl the other day that was cute. Not just the expression on her face, but the way the light caught a little flower pinned near her ear. So flowers = cute, some might say. Would a person who dumped a load of bags full of dandelion heads in an apartment lobby, many going to seed, be desirable also ? There's not actually a RULE against doing so, is there ?

If you keep poking a dog with a stick it doesn't always growl before it bites. A little free advice from me. ( Sorry it didn't come in a PM. )

Actually I never gave a flying fuck about what you said, or thought, about me; but it did make it difficult including you on the list for fear of it seeming invidious and vindictive. But drawing it up and not including you would have made it a mockery of the whole thing since you were a natural.

And... warnings for specific offences are mandatory; warnings for general bad posting are out: people have to monitor their own posting. It's not even a question of 'Rules', it's up to each individual not to dance on the motorway.

I'm saying ( again ) that a little fluff is no big deal. A truckload of it is. Although we'd probably prefer other flowers than dandelions, we can stand a few.

To use an example somebody else made up one day in a thread.

Poster A - "If I was in a club where I got a dollar every time I heard that stupid phrase, I'd be a millionaire." ( Last phrase of a pretty good post. )

Poster B - ( entire content of post ) "Where do I sign up for the club?"    ( an example of pure fluff )
* I wouldn't call it "clever banter" *

We've had people complaining about a lack of quality control, and eventually we have to move beyond just speaking about this in the abstract. Yet people will then complain as though they are being denied a natural resource that should be left "unmanaged". Or as though we had declared air to be our property, and henceforth all breathing was to be billable.
