No really, it's comical in an ironic/tragic way how many forces ganged up on them today:

"Russia's first-ever gay rights march descended into chaos and violence Saturday as Russian police, neo-fascists and Orthodox Christians clashed with demonstrators in Moscow."

How could you be any more screwed? Just check out this image of activists being arrested at this parade:

It's NOT funny. I'm quite aware of the hardships they/you endure, my coworkers are all East Europeans. Through their accounts, I can easily say that if wars have waged on things like Drugs, Terrorism and Communism: CORRUPTION is the international front upon which society should be waging war next.

-> from a bigotry angle this is somewhat depressing as well :(

Being arrested and roughly manhandled by butch Russian policemen in uniform must be a new gay fetish.

Probably their idea of a good day out.

Nope. I just find certain things never cease to be funny, the word "gay" happens to be one of them.

How's the old Yakov Smirnoff joke go?

"In Soviet Russia, the punishment for homosexuality is prison. You get locked up with other men -- and there is a three-year waiting list for that."

No, I don't remember reading anything about it.
A prominent Mari politician was coming to a conference to be held in Helsinki.
He was arrested in the train just before the train was to cross the Russian-Finnish frontier.
The Russian police had teared up his passport when he was asleep.
He was then accused that he travelled with a passport that was not in order. (Old Cheka tactics: clumsy and awkward. The Okhrana understood little; they understand less)
The man would probably be a member of the administration of the Mari Republic today had not the Russians "meddled" in the Mari Republic national elections.
In his place a Russian, not a Mari, was elected to be the head of state.

It is a confirmed affair that the election was not fair.

The man knows too much, and therefore he was not allowed to come to Helsinki.

It is interesting that no one protested.

Oil and gas.
