My results:

You scored as Type Eight: The Challenger.

You're a type eight: THE CHALLENGER. You're decisive, willful and confrontational. You value independance and are assertive. You want to be in control of your life and hate being told what to do. For this reason, you don't like groups and avoid them unless you're the boss. You are strong willed and determined, whenever you set your mind to something you're unstoppable. You appear to others as calm and cold but have sudden outbursts of anger over injustice. You are a protector of the weak. Inside you have a very big heart and a genuinely kind disposition. People may say you that you lack tact, but that's because you're dedicated to being honest.

It's just that Se is not at all my strong point. Sure, it's a lot stronger than Si, but my motivation for extraverting sensing is always to learn or figure out the essence of something, not simply to experience. Or maybe I'm just saying that cause I'm nothing like an ESFP, although I dated one (suggesting the attraction).

So does that make me a 5w6? How does this work exactly?

You definately are a type five, but I've found that just because your second-most-likely result is within enneagram-theory a potential wing, doesn't mean that is your wing. In fact the incredibly wide gap (98/77 %) makes me think six is not your wing.

Your local library probably has books on the ennegram ... I've found spending a weekend with this thick orange book called "type theory" (?) helped understand tremendously.

basically, you look like a five. But, that's saying much. In fact, it says about half as much as saying you're an INTP, because there are 16 MBTI types to the 9 E-types. ... So we have the wing theory -- that you resemble the core-type that is next to yours, in addition to having an instinctive type color your perceptions.

To Ka.avik and anyone else interested in responding thoughtfully:

How do you find the logical elegance/parsimony in transitioning theoretically from MBTI (16-types) to Enneagram [9X2(wings) or 3(wings+core only)-types] and then back to MBTI? Please explain...I'm very curious...:)

[EDIT: If this has already been discussed in this forum and to avoid redundancy (I'm looking for this now) please attach a relevant link. Thank you in advance!]

my answer, is that you don't. It's just a matter of that 9 is less specific than 16 types. The ennegram measures your motivations. why are you doing that? The MBTI measures how you do, what it is that you do.

Consider that the ennegram is like asking what kind of things you create at the factory where you work -- while the MBTI asks, what tool to you use at your job, at the factory.
IE you can use just a hammer, or just a screwdriver. But hammering with a screwdriver is hard, which is why INTPs don't always have the best feel for their personal value system and how it relates to their group-interactions. You can use a hammer to drive a screw, or a claw to carefully unscrew things, but not very well. ... which is why ISTJs aren't good at inventing things like instant-messaging. But, with your hammer, or screwdriver, are you making a kitchen cabinet, or a doghouse? A TV, or a telephone?

The enneagram tries to ask, what are you doing with that tool in your hands?

I may not have taken away all that I could from your production analogy. If this is the case, my apologies. The basic division between the less specific motivational aspect of the Enneagram ("Engrm" hereafter) and the functional-mechanistic facet of the MBTI seems very plausible at a surface level. But, when we add into consideration the primary, auxilary, etc. functions of the MBTI and their direction of influence (now 4 levels X 2 directions) does this not provide a medium to better integrate the two theoretical models? For concrete examples, there is a link at this site to an often cited and rather elaborate INTP profile description written by an INTP. If I remember correctly, he alludes to motivational aspects of the MBTI functions.

So, thinking on my computer keyboard for the moment...Further, in that the Engrm considers the dimensions of relating, feeling and doing, and the MBTI incorporates where one gets energy/activation (E/I), what sensory material for processing is preferred (S/N perhaps this is collapsed in the Engrm?), how decisions are usually reached (T/F), and to what extent these practices occur with more or less inhibitory control (J/P), it seems to me intuitively to be likely that they can be more effectively integrated in a parsimonious model. That is, as opposed to a couple of useful frameworks floating somewhat independently in one's mental construction of personality.

Do you or others agree? Or have ideas how the hierarchical organization of the MBTI might help to mechanistically explain motivations as captured in the Engrm? Or why this ought not be the case?

Also, the Engrm seems to nicely tap levels of psychic health, which I find clearly wanting from the MBTI (although it's only supposed to be an inventory for "normal" range functioning, whatever that is)...

Interested theoreticians, please don't be shy...:)
