My favorite science fiction writer is, without question, Greg Bear. The first book I read was Eon when I was a kid and had a great time.
Edited for more carrot-dangling: He's not great, in my opnion, for his ability to paint exciting pictures of space armada battles or electric swordplay. Nor does he excel when it comes to articulating personal relationships - romantic or otherwise. What he does so well is to turn the world into something almost magical, something from which which we can unfold unlimited possibilities if we put our minds to it.
Anyone out there in science fiction can do this better, in your opinion?
