Just throwing this out there: I am planning on being in the Philadelphia area for a weekend sometime after the first weekend of August. Ironically, I'm already meeting up with the person who got me into MBTI (she is not a forum member). Considering a move to PA.
I can usually be in Manhattan at the drop of a hat (40 min train ride).

I'm going to be in the East Bay tommorow through Sunday. I was wondering if anyone wants to meet up for coffee or beers and a trip to Moe's.
I have plans for either Thursday or Friday and I'll be busy during days and I'm going to the Broncos-Raiders game to support my beloved Broncos (If you never hear from me again, I was murdered by Raider fans).

Sounds like a plan. I'm going to be working until around five or so, myself. Not to mention, I don't have a cell phone (which is a whole other thread). Anywhere you would want to meet up around six? Moe's?

Sure, how about outside Moe's. If you want to grab a pint or two afterward, that would be cool.

Met up with MoneyJungle. We had a few pints, looked at goofy books and obscure sheet music, and had a generally good time. Apparently there's a strong market for used Celtic dulcimer fakebooks, just so you all know.

What do I have to do to earn a visit with Mr. Yorke?
(First, I'd spend five minutes chastising him for contributing to the Twitard soundtrack, and then I'd get my brain-picking on.)

Had a great time hanging w/my man, Ghost during his recent visit to So Cal. After throw back a couple at a non-trendy, non-hipster, pretty chill bar in Hollywood, I made him drink the kool-aid of Ameoba Music. Unfortunately, or fortunately, it was closing soon so no time to really check stuff out [read: over indulge]. He only had time to find a cd (or dvd) of an opera based on a book that he didn't know existed (the opera). Meanwhile I was not quite buzzed enough to drop $8.98 on a Ray Conniff, Jr Christmas CD. Though I may have to go back and hunt for a used copy or pull the trigger after I compare which songs I don't already have. Finally, we stopped at Roscoe's for a late night meal where I insisted he have some greens. It was a fun hang! :llama:

Didn't notice this post before. I was just watching Crime Wave (1954) and reminded of the awesomeness of LA. That CD I got was of an opera based on VALIS by Philip K Dick - one of my favourite books. It was a good find - I had no idea there was an opera.

I arrived at what appeared on the surface to be a gathering of people in the suburbs of Chicago, and at a house that would not ordinarily seem out of place. Many people may have already left the party by the time I got there, as I had been detained earlier. The time was close to 10 PM. There was still a fairly good crowd, consisting of a mix of singles and couples, including a cute little baby that I met on her way out.
The hostess was attentive, and we talked in the living room as I waited for Ptah. He was in an undisclosed location at that time, and this was my first inkling of his "cult leader" status. One could not simply walk in and quickly find him. There was an "inner circle"of people who had been promised earlier access. In fact, the Cult had no shame about offering me a sign-up sheet to make an appointment to see Ptah that very night !! ( Since I had been vetted earlier by Ptah himself on another occasion. )
The usual "sign in blood" request was waived in the light of me being a noob, and to make the connection seem less of a "gateway". I was told that there were two people ahead of me in the queue, and to be patient.
So I spoke to the gracious hostess, Sekhmet, and her sister. We spoke of cabbages and kings....and many other things. I also met other members of the cult. One man was actually paid to test video games and determine if they were conducive to cult values and subtle indoctrination. He probably doesn't get paid as much as Limey's "penetration testing" gig, but it sounded glamorous to me anyway. I was already falling under the spell of the Cult of Ptah, obviously.
Then came the hour of the dragon ! Ptah Himself appeared briefly amidst the outer regions, and beckoned me in to a room secreted in the back, away from the festivities.
As I entered the candle-lit room, I noted strange music playing in the background, and coming from an unknown source. Neither I nor Ptah commented on this. I, not wishing to appear the noob, and Ptah for reasons of his own. He took his spot at a large table, which occupied most of the room, and which had ornamental boxes at all four corners, as part of its decoration. He directed me to sit in a chair directly across from him, and looked at me with burning eyes.
I had reached the lair of Ptah, after experiencing the lure !!
( Tune in for the next exciting episode of the Adventures of Kuranes - "The Cult of Ptah Part 2 !!" to see if, or how, I survived or ....* drumroll * if I'm writing this as a * gulp * new member of the cult !! )

* sneak peek at Part Two *
Ptah took a deck of cards with strange symbols on them out and perhaps shuffled them or looked them over. I was not paying close attention at that moment, and looking around instead at the decor of the lair.
He advanced the deck across the table. I was to become "part of the process" ! I shuffled the cards for a while, using my special Kuranes' techniques. Doing this made me reasonably sure that there was no immediate skullduggery involved in the cards. I finished my part of the initiating ritual, and handed the deck back to Ptah, having "made my mark" so to speak.
He explained some general philosophies about the use of the cards, in a lulling voice, repeating certain themes. Then he explained what he intended to accomplish with them this evening. "Like MBTI, the cards simply represent a framework that one can use to see the world in a new way" he explained to me, reassuringly; perhaps sensing my wariness.
The cadenced nuances of his voice continuing this patter thrummed in the background, and I attended to them subconsciously as I looked about the exotic surroundings.
Outside...... the street was very quiet and dark, with most houses unlit and many unnumbered, their addresses known only to the postman...... perhaps a cult member himself. I had even gotten briefly lost on my way in, while looking for the correct address.
Other members of the cult were now departing the Ptah house, unbeknownst to me, as Ptah and I continued this ritual.
Soon...... it would be just Ptah, myself, and Sekhmet !!
* To be continued !! *
Kuranes... Had you arrived earlier, you might have also met others of the pantheon (or cult, if you prefer). Perhaps you did in fact encounter the aloof (translation: nigh drunk, by then) Thoth in passing (translation:stumbling by). Unfortunately, Horus was out of the country -- he would have made for an interesting exchange of words, I assure you. Alas, an erstwhile ally of Ptah, Anubis, has long since passed into another realm (where Ptah hopes he'll rot indefinately for his intent toward Sekhmet). And just before your initiating visit to the Chamber, Bast herself had graced its space (herself versed in the arts partaken of therein, but seeking another Prognosticator's perspective that evening). Don't let Sekhmet's "gracious hostess" conduct fool you.. she, too, can and will show a different color under the right (translation: wrong, for you) circumstances. For while she is sometimes identified as the goddess of drunken abandon (observe: warnings about the "zombie punch", and what it had done to Thoth), she is also --- for strong reasons --- revered/feared as the goddess of wrath and destruction.

There was a guy who you briefly introduced to me who was familiar with INTPc. Curly blondish hair. Glasses. Kinda stout. Was that him ? For some reason I thought of England, or a university prof, as he and I spoke, which, in turn, speaks well of him. He seemed quite friendly, though, and not that aloof, to my eyes then. Maybe it was the punch that I did not partake of. ( I'm leery of booze when I know I've got driving to do, or I'm otherwise tired etc. Working the rocks and minerals show the whole weekend since Friday had taken a lot out of me. )

He explained some general philosophies about the use of the cards, in a lulling voice, repeating certain themes. In some aspects, they were the Kings and Queens of Promise. Then he explained what he intended to accomplish with them this evening. "Like MBTI, the cards simply represent a framework that one can use to see the world in a new way" he explained to me, reassuringly; perhaps sensing my wariness.

Ptah asked me if I was familiar with the Tarot, and I told him that I had dabbled with it in my university days. He asked what shape the cards were arrayed in, during those times I had read the cards or been read. I told him that I used only the Major Arcana and it was the cross shaped array. He indicated that he used the entire deck and had a different shaped array in mind. And so he did. When he was finished there were three diagonal rows of cards and 4 cards in the corners of the board at table center.
The row to my left was how people perceived me. The row to my right was my internal state, which might even be concealed from my conscious mind sometimes, presumably by my subconscious. I have forgotten what the central row represented. Perhaps it was how I liked to think of myself. How I represent the conscious mind of Kuranes to Kuranes. * shrug * The corner cards would be explained later, Ptah said.
The initial three cards either represented a starting point in the past, or a starting point in the present.
Re: the initial three cards, then. Ptah told me that my inner state card was on a quest tied to my emotions. Outer state card - I presented myself to the world as someone who was just taking care of needful tasks. My middle state ( card ) was involved in trying to reorganize what I had to work with currently. Like a person trying to get more efficiency out of a refrigerator space, or the room inside of a moving van, but..... possibly doing all of this on a trial basis, for fit, without discarding any of the things being moved around.
This seemed accurate enough, in a way. From another POV, the outer state representation could be questioned, certainly, by those who know me well. But I assume that would only be because they had received info about the inner state that others hadn't, etc. Knowledge of my self-criticism and uncertainties.
The next tier of cards dealt with something in the near future. This was, for me, the only point that a Major Arcana card came into play this night. Ptah explained that the major Arcana are the only cards that typically can impose themselves on you. In this case it was the Wheel of Fortune, IIRC.
The next card indicated that what was being imposed was to be a triumph for me, although possibly an incremental triumph, or a triumph only recognized by certain people etc. The last card in this tier indicated I would be pressed to choose between two things, with no info to help me make the choice. It seemed like a bad thing, basically.
In the next tier of cards, IIRC, I would find my inner state bolstered somehow by a meeting with a new person or a new understanding with an old person. However, this was not necessarily a romantic relationship or lover.
The next card that turned up was * drumroll * .........!!!!!!!!..........
DEATH
Ptah shook his head as if sadly, and said "I'm afraid I'm going to have to..."

Not .... anymore. The role is open. However, to assume it you must first prove your worth, just as the established pantheon has already done, in a particular arena of competition... wherein either true immortals rise above the mortal fodder, or would-be petitioners find themselves awash among their own fragile kind.

Ha. No worries. Trust me, you may find yourself thinking "jeez, will these guys shut up already" should you ask "So, guys, what are some pointers?" before a game. As in: we'd happily share with you our freakish understanding of the system's nuances, in the hopes you'll understand and apply it all during the game. Because we know that if you can/do, your game will instantly jump up from the fodder walk-ins otherwise. You see, we don't mind bringing people up to our game, so that when we want actual competition, we've got some.
Little things like the timing of the gun's shoot/take-shot behavior and how it can be exploited to your advantage. The angles from which the pack's sensors can best be tagged, and the ideal distances involved. How not only mirrors reflect the IR beam. How IR hazing if not over-shined pack casing can mean one shot hits multiple people, and/or the same people more than once (on two sensors) at the same time. The duration of the actual IR on/off during a shot, how it syncs with trigger pull, the audible sound-effects made from the gun, and the best technique for "raking" the beam across crowds for similar (and more predictable) effect as IR hazing or sensor-shine... *truncated*
Yeah. We've been playing for that long.
Sad, really.

Ptah explained that the Death card was about as bad as it gets Tarot-wise, and that it was even worse than the Falling Tower ( I always think of John Cleese when I see the Falling Tower card ) and other notorious images. I asked various questions to see what I could do ( or what the forces might do ) to mitigate this. The next card showed a miser and then there was one about someone living as a street beggar. Ouch.
I don't remember what the other cards were that followed this, as far as the cards pertaining to my life. We moved on to the cards that were in the corners of the table, and I do remember two of them. One was the Knight of Swords, indicating that I was on a quest. The other, more over-arching card was the Queen of Swords, which Ptah said indicated that perhaps I was playing a game that had rules that most people didn't understand, and so that might be that mitigating influence that I was looking for. heh.
"Spirit, are these things you are showing me what will happen, or what could or 'might' happen ?" I asked of the spooky Ghost of Xmas Future. It continued to point at the Ebenezer Scrooge grave !
Eventually Ptah and I wrapped up the Tarot reading and I saw most people had left. I said "goonight" and did the same.
In our next meeting, we played laser tag, and "Apples to Apples" . But that's another story, for another episode - in "The Adventures of Kuranes" !
