I'm resurrecting the idea, because I think it will have some good effects on the forum. Recently I noticed that NCen is moving painfully slow again, and I think that apart from the arcade, the main reason is the shoutbox.
The shoutbox is a medium through which people say a whole lot of nothing. They spam, they say whatever, and no one cares. The mods don't care that it's being spammed, no one complains, and here's why:
As you've noticed, alot of the posts on this forum can be classified as "drivel." These are posts in which a whole lotta nothin' is said. Why do people do this? I don't know. I do it, yes, but I still don't understand why I feel the urge to do so.
The shoutbox provides a medium for that drivel, except it's in a much friendlier way. People get to be goofy, stupid, whatever, and they get it out of their system so they don't feel the need to post it.
Now, obviously, NCen is not INTPc. People here are rather hostile sometimes, and don't appologize for it, so, I wouldn't be surprised if some flamewars took place. However, wouldn't that be a good thing? The flamewar would go so much quicker, people would say what they think and then just get over it.
Plus, shoutboxes (at least the one on NCen does) have the option of being invisible, by way of a little button on the shoutbox itself, but the shoutbox is present on EVERY page within the forum.
So, I think that in the long run, people would put stupid stuff on the shoutbox, where it would disappear after about 20 minutes (depending upon how often the shoutbox is used) into the depths of the shoutbox archive, which takes up alot less memory than actual threads.
Less drivel posts, more interaction, a closer community. I think that these three premises make the shoutbox a great potential addition to the INTPc community.
