View Full Version : welcome to vbulletin

Read first:

- I will be importing the avatars unless the user has already set a new avatar.
- showing gender which I'll have to import as well.
-fix archive link, it's fucked for some reason

lower priority things for the moment:
- put image upload link somewhere
- I need to bring back the phear smilie !
- Another request: Can we enable birthdays on the calendar?
- Member view by date joined?
- We're invisible by default

taken care of:
- I will be working with some members to get a theme going -- I setup someone who can work on the style, users can see any work done on that style under edit options > misc options > forum skin > [newstyle] from dropdown menu.
- there are some broken images around the forum for some reason (if you see one, PM me or post in this thread) -- never received any pm's so I guess there isn't any broken images..
- edit template so username is on the lefthand side. done!
- add daily cronjob to optimize tables <-- done
- quick reply will be added in the coming weeks <-- this was in the options so this is done.
- front of site will change back to what it was previously and be reading from the vbulletin db<-- taken care of
- remove the displaying of 'edited by.. ' <-- might be fixed, I'll probably have to edit the template <-- actually, think I fixed it, so I don't have to edit the template.
- fixed issue where users couldn't change their avatar, http://www.intpcentral.com/forums/profile.php?do=editavatar

anything else that's missing in the to-do ??

original post:

either PM me at fci (http://www.intpcentral.com/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=1) or at file cabinet (http://www.intpcentral.com/forums/member.php?u=3). I will be giving up the administrator account to Ngene when she gets a hold of me.

Fixed items:
- enabled private messaging for everyone
- signatures / avatars / etc are on now

you can use this thread to discuss vbulletin .. or.. anything else.

if you haven't seen the accouncement thread yet:
http://www.intpcentral.com/forums/announcement.php?f=8

Looks like I may need to run some queries so everyone has certain things enabled(avatars/signatures/images).
Go here to update "Visible Post Elements" or wait until I run a query to update everyone's settings(didn't see it in the admin panel thing).
http://www.intpcentral.com/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions

also..
- report any broken images in this thread.
- apparently uploaded avatars didn't get transfered properly (but ppl with remote avatars worked).. so .. either you can upload a new avatar or I will import the avatars or obtain your old avatar if you want, etc...

taken from a post made later in this thread:

I'll just be honest...This color scheme bothers my eyes therefore giving me a headache, and the text/font size is pretty large (I'm in 1600x1200 on top of that); therefore, will other schemes be available in the future along with the ability to adjust the size of all the fonts and text that is being viewed?

Thank-you
Bluehaze

I'm not fond of the scheme either. it will be changing.

Anything everyone on the main site will come back will be back.. I just didn't want SQL errors.

I will be fixing on the 'default' options that SHOULD have been turned on but.. well, the import tool wasn't perfect.

gender will be displayed again.. might not my highest priority.

I miss the quick reply as well.

I don't know about flagging the unread messages ..

and this post claver made is pretty good:

Um, first: Well done, this is neat.

2nd. It looks like we'll have to wait for the Avatar option to be switched on, and then those imported or reloaded.

3rd. Go to your profile, and in Edit Options on the left, choose all the following:

Receive email from administrators
instant email notification

Thread Display Options

[Private Messaging]
Enable private messaging
email notification of private messaging
allow pop-ups of private messaging

Visible Post Elements
Show signatures
show avatars
show images

Thread display: linear -- show oldest first

Number of posts to show per page 40

Default age cut-off: show all threads

Time: set to your own private time-world

Message Editor Interface: Enhanced Interface Full WYSIWYG editing.

All other options should be to your own personal choice, but at least you'll now see the images and find an improvement on the Elder and Middle Forum experiences.

BTW: The dear smilie Phear is gone, which messes up my posts: I hope some-one shoves him somewhere soon.

Claverhouse

phear smilie will be coming back
I will be changing everyones options so the certain features are enabled.

Now, I know this will taken some getting used.. over the coming days/weeks the dust should settle.

Pros :

Faster Navigation.
Advanced text editor.
Subscriptions in your User CP. (keep track of your threads)
"Dot" folders, so you know what threads you have replied to.
Emails when someone replies to your thread.
Ability to ignore users.
"Thread View" options.
Download all Private Messages as : xml/csv/txt
Turn off sigs and avatars.
Better search features.
Fun new trip toys for me.
Still exploring...

I noticed a few problems :

Broken images when using smileys.
Your avatar is gone unless you linked to an off-site.
Custom titles are gone.
"Last edited" is back.

Lookin' good. :D

Couple of things:

- Image Uploader link is missing, and I can't remember the URL for it.
- URLs get truncated when they are posted, which makes it tough to cut and paste them. Minor detail. And I see it's a disablable(!?) option when posting.
- On the old boards, when I came, left, then came back, any topics I hadn't read were marked as read. All topics that are unread stay as unread topics now. <edit> And sometimes when I come back topics that I've already read are marked as new. Like this one, for instance. It does not appear to be a caching issue, (as a ctrl-reload doesn't seem to matter, and I've checked it on 2 PCs in both IE and Firefox) ... </edit>
- We're invisible by default
- No Quick Reply box
- The angry emoticon is missing in the post icon list, as seen above. Not that I'm angry. :)
- FAQ needs to be uploaded (link in top nav is lacking content)
- A Request: can the calendar be setup to email an event reminder 15 minutes before it's scheduled? That would be badass.
- Another request: Can we enable birthdays on the calendar?
- Member view by date joined?
- Archive link in bottom right is null - will that go to the old forum archive you created, fc?

Feels cramped...like going from viewing a forest from a plane, then to traversing it on the ground level. Maybe I'm just missing the option that allows you to change what it looks like.

Ehm...how do you link to off-site avatars? I can't choose any other option than "do not use an avatar".
I feel vulnerable without my dragon. <- Edit: do some smileys still not work?

Click the option to use a custom avatar. It's right below the "do not use an avatar" box in the "Edit Avatar" control panel.

Unfortunately not. I only have one single radio button. Seems like the custom avatar function is turned off for my account. :(

Well we should probably add that to the list then.

I can input my own custom title...so I did. :D

Same here, and it's automatically selected; perhaps different people are seeing different options ? Anyway the Avatars will arrive at the time of their choosing...

But someone ought to fix the defaults on the profile options, so that the more sensible selections are default > many people scarcely know their profile exists.
EG: Use invisible mode is automatically enabled. At present I'm told there are 7 members on board, only 3 of them including myself are listed ( and 10 'guests' )... Guests, or puzzled members ? :hello:

Elsewhere I listed a few other things you could change for instant gratification, but if the defaults were changed to show all visible post elements there may not be an unwelcome flood of messages complaining they can't see things. And set the message interface to full mode.

As Int says, the flagging of read messages is weird or non-existent: do we need a tutorial ? And how does the rating system work ?

Claverhouse

[ I'm not thrilled that you can't turned of the 'edited by' bit whenever you change a couple of letters ].

We had to change to vBulletin before the skin's worked out, so the aesthetics are not staying like this.

Gender isn't displayed anymore... and I miss quick reply... and you can't delete posts if you accidentally doublepost... but you can't doublepost, because of the thirty second cooling off period... other than that, looks good. It'll take getting used to.

it's cool, so long as this general scheme isn't permanent... The color scheme doesn't bother me per se, it reminds me of my other favorite forum (http://forums.maxima.org)

However, the general layout is nasty. The icons in the main navigational lists seem too... large and "busy". Simplistic icons are preferable. Plus, I like having the avatar and such on the left side of the post, rather than above. Hopefully all of those will be addressed :)

It's decent, but I look forward to better skins.
Also, where did the archive get off to?

I long for the avatars...I especially miss mine. :(
