I'm also intrigued by this article (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/pacificnw/2003/0202/cover.html) re: why some cities have it while others don't. The reason being a smaller power structure vs that which is diffuse.
I think that Clavs is onto something.
Now all the libertarian types can freak out, but seriously - would it not be better for humanity in general if we had more dense, more efficient living?
Though I do wonder how these snazzy multi-use high-rises will age after forty years...
