It has to do with the purpose of the gore and/or sexuallity. The point of showing an Iraqi getting his brains blown out is informative. The point of showing someone's bare ass on a movie is to be 'explicit' and/or entertain. Not all find bare asses entertaining, so they complain and the hollywood executives care enough to put a rating on it so the right types of people go and watch and they can get maximum profit. However, no one can disagree with the educational value of an Iraqi's brains getting blown out without looking very far removed from reality. Just like people can't deny the educational value of seeing naked people in a human anatomy textbook.

I don't think that education and detachment are mutually inclusive. In fact, I think emotional detachment is what allows you to find it entertaining when someone gets his brains blown out. The beginning of the war on Iraq was exciting precisely because the reality of people dying had not sunk in yet. So everyone was probably more detached at the beginning than they are now. The reason I think people get offended by stuff that's supposed to be entertaining is that they're NOT detached.

I'm just pissed about the media throwing a fit about the T.O. Monday Night Football Promo with Nicollette Sheridan's bare back. Yet, no one says anything about the video on the news showing an injured Iraqi taking a bullet in the head, just cause he was still breathing.

My dad's like that too, but i think it's mostly because my stepmom is a complete prude in that respect and he goes along with it.
