View Full Version : Hypnotism

So we're driving down the street, going to a movie at noon on a Wednesday, because everyone should be able to go to a movie at noon on a Wednesday.
But I digress.
So we hear this ad on the radio for hypnosis CDs to help eliminate procrastination. At first I think, "B.S." Then I think "I should try them to prove failure." Then I think, "Keep an open mind and allow yourself to be allured by this really bad marketing ploy."
So I concluded I'll buy the CDs later, but you saw that coming.
So I'm wondering if anyone has tried hypnotherapy or something similiar to cure any of their suckages.

My university put on a program last week. They had two groups: one to lose weight, and the other to quit smoking. Hehe, I guess if someone was overweight and addicted to smoking he had to make a tough choice. Earlier this week, they had a newspaper article on the local hypnotist. It said there are 10,000 nationally. He charges $65 per hour, but says most things can be cured in half-an-hour. I read online that hypnosis can even be used to increase breast size. Believe it or not.

Yes, I grew up with a mom that loved hypnotists. Used to drive hundreds of miles to go to Dr. Traverse, someone that hypnotized patients before surgery so they would heal faster. The hospital itself hired him, because it really worked. I was hypnotized so that I could wear braces for my teenage smile, and only have to wear them for a few months instead of a year. It works. Its a medical fact, it works. Go for it.

hypnotism only works for some people. one of the interesting aspects of hypnosis is that a hypnotist is most likely to be successful if they are a total stranger to the person they are hypnotizing (ideally an esteemed stranger). The more familiarity there is with subject and hypnotist, the less chance there is of the subject being hypnotized. i imagine hypnotism works best with external locus of control personality types, if you have a strong internal locus of control anything a hypnotist can prgram into you, you program into yourself.

According to my psychology book hypnotism creates a trans like state of heightend suggestion. Not everyone can be hypnotised. When asked to regress to a child many actually don't conjure up children of the past, but instead act as how they think a child would act. They have found that people under suggestion can be influenced directly by how they think the hypnotist wants them to act. Depending on how the hypnotist suggests things the reciever will change how they act.
The best uses for hypnotism are certain mind over matter problems. Such as pain reduction, fear or anxiety. From what my book says it doesn't really have a higher success rate when dealing with other form of therapy for alcoholism. It says that normally any suggestions won't last much longer than when the hypnotist is around.

Rather than start a new thread and be pointed here, I'm just going to drag this one back up.
I've been thinking about visiting a hypnotherapist for help with weight control and maybe for motivational issues, if they can help with that. I hate to shell out cash for something that's as unguaranteed as this, and I don't expect self-hypnotism will be any indicator of the success of a 'professional' hypnotherapist - so if I fail at that, I would be unconvinced that I can't receive help.
Is there any way to figure out ahead of time if your mind is willing to accept hypnotism?

I looked into hypnotism - but not for myself - but to learn to hypnotize others when I learned of a robbery that happened in Italy where this guy hypnotized a cashier and had her hand over all her money. She had no memory of it and it was only discovered later when they looked at the security tapes. I want to control other peoples minds. Mu ha ha ha ha!
After a while I lost interest so I do not have that ability. Maybe I should pick up that info again.

This thread reminds me of "Office Space."
