RABAT (Reuters) - Morocco's security services broke up a "terrorist network" planning to declare a holy war in the northeast of the North African country, state news agency MAP reported on Monday.

The authorities arrested 44 members of the previously unknown Jammaat Ansar El Mehdi (El Mehdi Support Group) and seized explosives, propaganda material and laboratory equipment, the agency quoted an Interior Ministry statement as saying.

The group's leader "aimed to proclaim the jihad", or holy war, it said. It did not say when or where the arrests, the biggest such round-up this year, took place but added that the group planned to operate in the kingdom's northeast.

Morocco has been on alert since 2003 when suicide bombers killed 45 people in Casablanca, the country's financial capital.

The government said earlier this year it had busted more than 50 terrorist cells with more than 2,000 members since the bombings, a traumatic event in a normally peaceful country that relies on tourism for much of its hard currency earnings.

Of course, Islam has absolutely nothing to do with this. Islam is the religion of peace, and there is only a tiny minority of extremists among muslims!

There must be a political motive behind this. Morocco must have a long record of oppressing and persecuting Muslims. Either that, or Morocco's foreign policy must be upsetting the Muslims somehow. Just look at all those Moroccan troops deployed in Iraq, killing and raping Iraqis mercilessly!
Also, It must be a close ally to Israel. In fact, the Moroccan government and media are controlled by Zionists. Hell, the King himself must be a Zionist!

Yes, yes, those must be the reasons. After all, these terrorists are just normal people. They wouldn't blow things up just like that, would they? There must be a good reason. Did I mention that Islam has absolutely nothing to do with this?

Ok maybe men need war...if they don't have one, they create one.

Here is a revolutionary hypothesis (not)

Here are a few interesting things about psychopaths:

Most studies of the psychopath have taken place among prison populations, though it has often been suggested that the psychopath is just as likely to sit on a Board of Directors as behind bars, concealing his true nature behind a well crafted "Mask of Sanity" (also the title of the one of the first definitive studies of psychopathy, written by Hervey M. Cleckley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hervey_M._Cleckley) in 1941 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1941).)
Cleckley defined psychopathy thus:[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychopath#_note-mask)
Superficial charm and average intelligence.
Absence of delusions and other signs of irrational thinking.
Absence of nervousness or neurotic manifestations.
Unreliability.
Untruthfulness and insincerity.
Lack of remorse or shame.
Antisocial behavior without apparent compunction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compunction).
Poor judgement and failure to learn from experience.
Pathological egocentricity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egocentric) and incapacity to love.
General poverty in major affective reactions.
Specific loss of insight.
Unresponsiveness in general interpersonal relations.
Fantastic and uninviting behavior with drink, and sometimes without.
Suicide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide) threats rarely carried out.
Sex life impersonal, trivial, and poorly integrated.
Failure to follow any life plan. source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychopath

Psychopaths tend to to consider others inferior, have contempt for their peers, and they're antisocial, pathological liars. Laws don't count to them.
They can also be charming, intelligent, witty, often socially desirable.
So there just might be a possibility that there's more to this case than Islam.

on a relatively unrelated note:

are street gangs the same as "terrorist networks"? what differentiates a gang member from a terrorist?

Well if a gang is terrorising a neighbourhood, then to the neighbourhood I guess they could be classified as terrorists.
