BOULDER, Colo. - A man suspected in the slaying of 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey nearly a decade ago was arrested Wednesday in Thailand, the district attorney said in the long-awaited breakthrough in one of the nation's most lurid unsolved murder cases.

I followed this case with interest 10 years ago, and at the time was appalled at the way the Boulder Police and DA continued to finger JonBenet's parents; despite evidence of an intruder, and numerous leads to suspects that were ignored or not followed up. I'm wondering what was behind this witch hunt of the parents - was there some kind of disapproval of their wealth or the fact that JonBenet was allowed to participate in beauty pageants?

If I were the father (mother now dead) I would consider suing the Police for damages.

Yeah, heavy disapproval for the pageants. I disapprove of that myself, but that shouldn't have stopped the police from doing a thorough investigation. I'm glad they got the guy and I think it's sad about the mother dying never having seen vindication.

Reminds me of the Eugenics movment where people would have fairs, and parents would compete to see who had the most genetically fit child or whatever (based solely, of course, on aesthetics and observable traits).

I guess we'll have to wait for the DNA test results to be made public to find that out for sure. His ex-wife says he wasn't even in Colorado at the time, but I suppose she has a motive for keeping him out of prison since they have children together. (Which is sick in its own way, considering this guy is, if not JonBenet's killer, still a child molestor in several states. Not looking too good for him.)

The concept of the beauty pageant doesn't disturb me in the least. I bet my daughter would flip for the chance to dress in awesome clothes and flounce around on-stage.

The reality of the beauty pageant makes me want to go into flip-out papa bear mode and kill anyone who suggests my daughter take part.

This case is the one that really opened my eyes to the kind of power the media throws around.

Four years ago, Karr began to send anonymous e-mails to Michael Tracey, a Colorado University journalism professor who had reported extensively on the JonBenet killing. In May this year, Tracey contacted the district attorney in Boulder, beginning the series of events which lead to Karr?s arrest last week in Bangkok, where he?d been living at a rundown hotel.

In one e-mail exchange, Tracey says to Karr: ?You told me once that your mother tended to raise you as a girl. This must have had a powerful effect on your developing sexuality confusion maybe?? He later asks if Karr?s ?fascination with little girls which clearly has a strong erotic component is a way of going back??.

Karr later wrote in reply: ?Maybe I am not going back but have simply stayed consistent. My peer group has not changed since I was a little boy, and girls were the people I was with always .?
