Iran has been calling the United States of America an "American Empire". Whether this is true or not I think having an American Empire is no such a bad idea. What do you think?

This is no serious comment and was not well thought out.

Edit: The President of Iran has been call.......

There's a decent book kicking around on my bookself and I've seen it referenced on here before: Colossus (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0143034790/sr=8-1/qid=1155849828/ref=sr_1_1/002-2872634-1245610?ie=UTF8)

One of the reasons the US gets so much shit is because when it acts in bad faith, it doesn't live up to the ideal the international community has sub-consciously assigned it. For every vocal anti-American, there is a person who doesn't realize how glad they are the US is the hegemon. Which is also why it's so painful to see a dumbass like Bush kick it in the teeth.

On this note if the decline really is happening and continues to do so, the next 50 years are going to be hella* interesting.

The more America acts like an empire the sooner we will have to fight China, possibly a China-Russia tagteam.

Not looking forward to that.

Where did it come from then? Like what attributes relate to America how.

i want oil with my rice crispies, and the only way to do that is for America to control all the oil in the world.

Oil cost way too much. To top that off, bottled water costs even more....It's silly that water you can get free from the water fountain in a nearby park could cost more than oil.

Oil costs as much as it does because the market is controlled by two oligopolies: OPEC and the American refinery companies. An oligopoly controlled market is generally anti-competitive, and the firms implicitly or explicitly set the prices and cooperate to optimize their profits. Demand does not set the price, because they can control whether the year is good or bad. The oil prices are largely inflated.

But America is a plutocratic oligarchy, indirectly influenced by powerful businessmen. They have apparently lost interest in the state, and only care about their short-term profits. Their efforts certaintly make America appear to be a neo-colonial Empire. But personally, I think their businesses are the imperialists and the state has become their tool.

as I understand it, that's how Australia does a lot of it.

As to america being an empire, that it's an empire is fine, except that it's a selfish empire that's no longer out to make the world a better place -- it's just out to beef up the NASDAQ. Probably a function of how rich we've become.

Do you realize that only rich people can afford to be skinny? Our poor, eat BK whoppers and little else, because it's actually quite cheap -- and very fattening. That's messed up.

Amercia is not an empire in the Military or Economic veiw...they are past that...they have already couquered the world! They are a cultural empire much like Roman was in it's day or Babaylon (excuse the spelling). the funny thing is when they mention the president as the "leader" of the "free" world. Those two words don't seem to fit together quite a hyperbole (again excuse the spelling). In a "free world" the invidual is the leader.

I've read something like that. U.S. culture and policies have been recreated in many countries. Many view this as a form of imperialism.
