In my mind, Brazil seems like one of the safer places for the first-world tourist to visit in South America. I suspect Bogota would be far worse, despite what Cidade de Deus (http://imdb.com/title/tt0317248/) has to say about Rio.

All big cities are dangerous. You have to be pretty naive or very unlucky to get shot - just don't carry lots of cash and hand it over if it ever gets demanded, like any sensible person would in any city in the US and much of Europe.

And I have walked around at night many times, and me being a scrawny looking whiteboy with Euros, and I have walked through many unlit and streets and some horrible streets (I've got family in low places).

You really have nothing to be scared of.

I have considered this also. Can you imagine the cocaine-fueled traveller parties in South America...and how many end in something terrible? After the army, a lot of Israelis go to South America to live it up. I can only imgaine what goes on there. Part of me wants to know first-hand, yet another part doesn't want my teeth removed with pliars. (There was a "solstice party" in Venezuela many years ago. Can only imagine what that was like.)
