Seems to me to be a good way to sink that pseudo government completely. I have a hard time imagining a better way to scuttle support... he was already undermined from within...

Nothing more than political postering. If they wanted to help, they could of helped him in all sorts of ways (like actually getting money to pay civil wages, say, that is undermining the current government).
