Reminds me of drumline warmups I used to have to do... to get the rythym down, we'd say it, then play it... (excuse the rhyming, but this was a band camp thing... and it wasn't so much saying as yelling at the top of our lungs... yeah.) Anyway, ask a local drummer what they do to warm up and see if they did this... say things like accents and taps until he gets what you're talking about.
