What is Linux From Scratch?
Linux From Scratch (LFS) is a project that provides you with the steps necessary to build your own custom Linux system
where I heard about it:

anyway, I really wish I had a separate machine I could use to play with LFS.

I've built the kernel from source, including building in drivers, but not a whole system. I don't have the energy at this point to work through everything. I'm sure it's useful, but I prefer to work at the application layer.
I have a decent set of XNIX administration skills, but I see these as more useful tools than a primary interest.

I'm stuck in a Winders world. I grew up using DOS and I can comfortably navigate XNix boxes with a command cheatsheet. Most of my experience has been with dedicated servers like Automated Dialers and Voicemail, telephony stuff.
I have attempted to install several different flavors of Linux on some old boxes, but I lack the patience to search for drivers. I hope to someday build a Linux box, from scratch would be a fun learning experience, but I lack hardware to do so right now. Which reminds me, I need to get my Dell GX150 back from my neighbors. I was gonna turn it into a CFusion and Java Server. Kinda thinking I may run with Linux instead.
