choices always were a problem for you
what you need is someone strong to guide you

deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
what you need is someone strong to guide you.....

i had a friend once, he took some acid
now he thinks he? a fire engine
it's ok, until he pisses on your lighter
kinda smells kinda cool, kinda funny anyway...

i had this friend once
he took some ecstasy
tried to marry me and everyone in the room
it was sorta loving, kinda caring
kinda tried to fuck my lazyboy

it got a bit messy
all over the curtains
armchair covers, throw pillows and carpet...

The Rain Song is a great song. I think Jimmy Page used an altered tuning for that song to get the chords to sound that way...nice touch.

Actually, ( smug in the knowledge that no-one else will have heard it, or can ) my very favourite song of all time is: 'My Irish Molly'o' sung by Maura O'Connell with the Irish group De Danean back in the 80s before she moved to Nashville.

I very much doubt it. I've only got an old LP & some cassettes. Doubt if she herself thinks highly of it by now. She split from De Danean a long time ago.

This is her Official Website, but I've never heard her American output, and I'm not sure I'd like it, but surely a great great voice.

Led Zeppelin - "Ten Years Gone"; or "The Rain Song"
Wow, I was thinking of those very two. But I'm not sure if "What is and What Should Never Be" may be their best all-around song. It always cracks me up when radio stations count down "the best songs of all time!!!", Stairway to Heaven is always near the very top, but I don't even know if it's one of Zep's top ten.

Certain Zeppelin songs carry such strong memories for me. I don't know why. I like them but I wouldn't consider them one of my favorites. Like What is and What Should Never be reminds me of driving across the border to drink and this band in Cheyenne that did an amazing rendition of the song. The Rain Song, a basement where we used to party my freshmen year in college. I went out with this girl who loved In The Evening. She took me out for my 30th birthday, managed to open up this huge tab and the juke box, from which she did a nice dance for me when her song came on.

I had a Kirin with my dinner, can you tell? Holy cow, did I get a strong batch. Anyway, now that my inhibitions have been lowered (did I spell that right? We need spell check on this site. Well, I do) I would like to offer a timeless classic. A master piece of storytelling, unmatched laments, precise lyrics and structure, loved by generation after generation. I am of course referring to...

A Weekend in New England by master composer Barry Manilow.

OK, I'm not a huge fan of his by any means, but I do love that song.

"Lady With A Fan" (Lyrics: Robert Hunter)

Let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm
That will not forsake me, till my tale is told and done
While the fire lights aglow, strange shadows from the flames will grow
Till things we've never seen will seem familiar

Shadows of a sailor forming winds both foul and fair, all swarm
Down in Carlisle he loved a lady many years ago
Here beside him stands a man, a soldier by the looks of him,
Who came through many fights, but lost at love

While the story teller speaks, a door within the fire creaks,
Suddenly flies open, and a girl is standing there
Eyes alight, with glowing hair, all that fancy paints as fair
She takes her fan and throws it in the lion's den

Which of you to gain me, tell, will risk uncertain pains of hell?
I will not forgive you if you will not take the chance
The sailor gave at least a try; the soldier, being much too wise,
Strategy was his strength, and not disaster

The sailor, coming out again, the lady fairly leapt at him
That's how it stands today. You decide if he was wise
The story teller makes no choice, soon you will not hear his voice
His job is to shed light, and not to master

Since the end is never told we paid the teller off in gold
In hopes he will come back, but he cannot be bought or sold

It's pretty difficult to name just one song or a few songs I like--and there are a lot of songs with no real "names" to speak of I like. I'll try to take a little less license with the question though, and say, oh, maybe some of the stuff that the Kronos Quartet has done.

Me, too! Back in the day, my friends would say I'm the only person who'd ever put Debbie Gibson and Public Enemy on the same mix tape. Not back to back but there's so much out there to bridge the gap.

Even today I listen to all types. Which sometimes I'd scan the radio dial and not find a decent song and I'd wonder what do the people do who only like a couple types or styles?

Truth Is A Whisper
(John Rzeznik)

Truth is a whisper and only a choice
Nobody hears above this noise
Always a risk when you try and believe
I know there's so much more than me

Yeah I got caught in the ruse of the world
It's just a promise no one ever keeps
And now it's changing while we sleep
And no one can see

Chorus:
You know all I am
Feel this moment in you
You know all I am
Can you teach me to believe in something

Sometimes you choke on the smell
Just to breathe
I need to question what I need
Rhythm of silence
That beats through your mind
Still you forget what you deny

Yeah I got caught in the ruse of the world
It's just a promise no one keeps
And now it's changing while we sleep
And no one can see

Chorus

Who's the one you answer to
Do you listen when he speaks
Or is everything for you
And do you find it hard to sleep
Or is it easy on your own
Will you ever find some peace
Before you're gone

Chorus

I like almost every single song from when the Goo Goo Dolls turned rock-style from punk, "Iris" was the first song I heard from them and "A Boy Named Goo" was the first CD I ever bought.

And if anyone is interested in Cuban music, Silvio Rodriguez is one of my favs as well.

"Tennessee Flat-top Box" Johnny Cash

"Tangerine" Led Zeppelin

"I Wanna Be Sedated" The Ramones

Ministry- Every Day is Halloween

(Everyday is) Halloween
well i live with snakes and lizards
and other things that go bump in the
night cos to me everyday is halloween
i have given up hiding and started to fight
i have started to fight well any time,
any place, anywhere that i go all the
people seem to stop and stare they say

'why are you dressed like it's halloween?
you look so absurd, you look so obscene'
o, why can't i live a life for me?
why should i take the abuse that's served?
why can't they see they're just like me it's
the same, it's the same in the whole wide world

well i let their teeny minds think that they're
dealing with someone who is over the brink and
i dress this way just to keep them at bay
cos halloween is everyday it's everyday o,

why can't i live a life for me?
why should i take the abuse that's served?
why can't they see they're just like me it's
the same, it's the same in the whole wide world
o, why can't i live a life for me? why should i
take the abuse that's served? why can't they see
they're just like me i'm not the one that's so
absurd why hide it?

why fight it? hurt feelings best to stop feeling
hurt from denials, reprisals it's the same it's the
same in the whole wide world

Tool seems like a band a lot of INTPs would like. Stinkfist is Tool's best song in my opinion.

For a song I have no doubt everyone has heard, Funeral March by Chopin. People might not have heard the name before, but it's not hard to figure out what song it is just from the name. I don't know if I really like listening to it all that much, but it's fun to play.

"Surrender" Cheap Trick

"Subdivisions" Rush

I had just stayed at my sister's house and in the two years since she and her husband have moved in a couple of complete new developments have gone in all around them. They all look the same. Beautiful homes but at the same time it's all depressing in their own way. I was thinking of this song a lot.

Amazing the forced conformity. "You paid how much for this house and someone's going to tell you what color it can be painted???" That's going to be my big April's Fool joke. Go into suburban real estate offices in developing communities and ask, "Can I see something in other than beige?"

Subdivisions is such a total intp song.

No where is the dreamer or the misfit more alone. Subdivisons Conform or be cast out.

This is sad to admit but I actually like that song "Breakaway" by Kelly Clarkson...no, no, keep reading. At first I was thinking it was because she reminds me of a friend, particularly some stuff in the video, because I never got into her before, but then the lyrical themes between Subdivisions and Breakaway are very similar. :nerd:

I actually saw Rush on the Signals tour. Amazing. Also, what a prophetic message for middle school and high school. Yikes. I also noted Surrender. Wasn't what's his name from Fast Times at Ridgemont High singing Surrender when he was scalping Cheap Trick tickets? Kind of a strange tie in since it's about this surburban high school life...

I shall have to throw that puppy on!

Neil Peart (drummer from Rush, writes all lyrics) has to be INTP or J. "The Pass" and "Anthem" are two of his best lyrical compositions. I took a lot of flack in high school for being so into them in the age of grunge, but that just made me like them more.

They put on an excellent performance live. The only other live performance I've seen that could match them was The Who when Entwistle was still alive. (Can only dream about what it was to hear them live with Moon, just listen to "Live at Leeds.")

I'm more into albums than individual songs:

The Who - Quadrophenia

Placebo - Sleeping with Ghosts

Rush - Hemispheres

Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy

"Belonging" - Secret Garden

I'm on a Secret Garden binge right now. Hoorah for Norwegians who compose depressing, celtic music!

I guess it's not really depressing, but rather melancholic.

I love Secret Garden. Belonging is from Once in a Red Moon, isn't it? I think their earlier albums are better, personally.

Are you familiar with their song Prayer ? It's quite lovely (but so are all the others, it's hard to choose favorites).

Speaking of Secret Garden binges...I was on one of those a few weeks ago.

Detached and subdivided

Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone"
Thanks for noticing. I was being a wee cryptic and yes, it is an INTP song. We all like embarrassing music at times (some just more than others). *looking at Avril fans* ;)

Bonham, Pert, and Moon are/were all incredible musicians.

Rush - Hemispheres

You're the first person I've met who's said that was their favorite Rush album. A couple of years ago I met someone who's favorite was Caress of Steel. So surprising for me. I loved Exit Stage Left in high school. I'd put it on low to fall asleep to. La Villa Strangiato was such a great song to listen to falling in & out of consciousness.  :)

2112, Permenant Waves, Moving Pictures and Signals are my favorites depending on mood. All of which were released before the advent of the CD. :o Someone gave me a tape of Signals for my birthday when I was in the 8th grade. Moving Pictures was my first CD I got, Christmas of '84 or '85. Won't be long before I'm humming Red Barchetta while being wheeled out to get some sun. :(

Currently on Rhapsody, I am playing Todd Snider's "My Generation." Here is an excerpt:

My generation, part two, book three, verse four,
Jackson Five, Nikki Sixx

My old man says the Woodstock generation
Found a way to make this nation
Open up its eyes and take a look around
And he says my generation
Ain't good for nothing
I could think of something
So I thought I'd jot it down

Here's to hair gel
Hanging out at the health spa
Using condom sense
Watching L.A. Law
Here's to drum machines
Stonewashed jeans
Credit cards, fax machines
Big bow-headed chicks and frat guys
Wearing forty dollar tie-dyed t-shirts
And big old paisley ties
Here's to living off dad as long as you can
And blending in with the crowd
Oh, my generation
My generation
My generation should be proud

We were raised up in the hallowed halls
Of half a million shopping malls
And there ain't any price that we're too proud to pay
We'll buy anything from Diet Sprite
To one thousand points of light
Hey, I admit we're not that bright
But I'm proud anyway

"The Wonderful Future"

She builds her own satellite
From an old rusted chair
She leaves this old world behind
And the things that she cares

Maybe she's gone
But it won't be for long
What do I know?
Maybe she's found
What we all dream about
What do I know?

She's beautiful and wonderful
I can't compare
It's not that fair

She builds a strong alibi
From the future that's here
She needs to know I'm alive
And that I'm flesh and I tear

Maybe she's wrong
But I won't mind my own
What do I know?
And their silicone
With a touch of her soul
What do I know?

She's beautiful and wonderful
I can't compare
It's not that fair

Song for Song, I'd agree. Exit...Stage Left is the best. I was adhering to some unwritten rules of studio only, no live or compilation albums.

From what I remember about the Signals tour concert was that they played the first part of Xanadu, or a good chunk but I'm fairly certain it wasn't the whole thing and then, did they go into part of A Fairwell To Kings? (can't remember) and then blended into 2112 Overture and Temples of Syrinx and then worked their way into Red Barchetta. That was about 22 years and two weeks to the date, so forgive me if the order's out-o-whack. :o

I always thought they were kind of disappointing live after listening to "Song Remains the Same" and various bootlegs I downloaded. I saw somethng about Song Remains the Same. It talked about how messed up the band was, end of the tour, blah, blah, blah. I don't know, it really turned me off to them. I like more of their studio albums now but it was simply rancid.

Lot of live albums suck. I'm sure because half weren't really intended to be released just done under contractual obligation or before a band leaves/gets booted from a label. I got a live INXS cd that had a two week turnaround before making it back to the used cd bin. I've been meaning to, for years, years, rent or buy Def Leppard's In the Round, In your Face, whatever it's called concert video as I was at the bloody thing. I was able to pick me out for a split second in the Pour Some Sugar On Me video, but I'm not really recognizable in it.

What makes bands like Zeppelin great is their timelessness. I have little doubt that kids will continue to discover their music for several generations. Personally, I'm not concerned with their connection to modern "angst" because I don't really feel like I'm a part of it. I've always felt I belong in another decade or even century. Given their interest in the "Lord of the Rings," however, one could argue that Zeppelin is very adaptable to current interests and moods.

I want to be right on top of the beat all the time, so that every note I play sounds like a cannon firing. To me, this is what made Zeppelin's rhythm section so powerful and compelling to hear (Jimmy who? ), and I treasure drummers who keep straight beats for this very reason.

This is universal to me. Just listen to Kleiber's Beethoven 5th in the last movement, where the whole orchestra is playing a short note on 1 and 3 with a timpanist. The next to last time they do this, they get it perfect...Pow!

Tears of joy at the birth of a brother
Never alone from that time
Sixteen years through knife fights and danger
Strangely why his life not mine

Fallen angel dying

Lifetimes spent on the streets of a city
Make us the people we are

Better get back to the car

Snow white side streets of cold new york city
Stained with his blood it all went wrong
Sick and tired blue wicked and wild
God only knows for how long

Some “classics” for the male gender:

“Mother” – Pink Floyd (the insecure little boy in us all)

“Red Barchetta” – Rush (nothing quite compares to the relationship between a man and his first car)

“Black” – Pearl Jam (the agony of loving a woman who does not love you)

What’s great about bands like Zeppelin, Rush, Pink Floyd, even the Beatles (who have unfortunately been overplayed in previous generations, but are still Gods) is their diversification in their music. You can listen to two different songs from each band and think it’s not the same band. Not only is their music beautiful, but it keeps you interested. Some bands, it seems especially modern bands, play the same vein over and over until you’re tired of it and ready for something else.

"If" (Bread)
"Star Spangled Banner" (Hendrix version)

All big faves of mine too, except I can't recall "If". I do remember the Pink Floyd "If" , though. How about "End of the Night" by the Doors? "Long May You Run" by Neil Young.

Hell yes! If you like "Sweet Virginia", try "Dead Flowers", or "Let it Bleed", and "You Got the Silver". The Stones do "Country-rock" better than anyone.

"Monkey Man" gets my vote too, even though it's not country-rock. Just thought I'd slip it in.

The Logical Song - Supertramp

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful, a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily, joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible, logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable, clinical, intellectual, cynical.

There are times when all the world's asleep, The questions run too deep for such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned, I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am.
Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical, liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable! And

I’m Not In Love -10cc

I'm not in love, so don't forget it, It's just a silly phase I'm going through
And just because I call you up, Don't get me wrong, don't think you've got it made
I'm not in love, no-no(It's because...)

I like to see you, but then again, That doesn't mean you mean that much to me
So if I call you, don't make a fuss Don't tell your friends about the two of us
I'm not in love, no-no(It's because...)

I keep your picture upon the wall, It hides a nasty stain that's lyin' there
So don't you ask me to give it back, I know you know it doesn't mean that much to me
I'm not in love, no-no(It's because...)

I don't listen to songs, I usually listen to albums. Recently, I've been on a slayer trip.

Slayer - Show No Mercy : Fun thrash metal with some hints of the future. Highlights include "Die by the Sword", the title track, and "Chemical Warfare" (off of their killer EP, which is better than this album probably)

Slayer - Hell Awaits : In my opinion their best album. Lengthy song development and very intelligent classical-esque melodic songwriting. Highlights include the whole damn album, but specifically "Crypts of Eternity", "Kill Again", "At Dawn they Sleep" and the title track. Basically created the death metal style of viral melodic evolution.

Slayer - Reign In Blood : Pure Nihilistic Energy. Raining Blood and Angel of Death are brilliant, and pretty much every track in between them is consistently battering and constantly energetic. Basically created the death metal style of chromatic melodic deconstruction.

Slayer - South of Heaven : Just a wonderful album, varied, balanced, and forms a great composition of their last two albums. "Cleanse the Soul" has a great hook, the title track is also ridiculously catchy, Silent Scream and Live Undead are very well developed tracks, Ghost of War is great as well.

Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss: Really degenerates. The first 2 tracks, "War Ensemble" and "Blood Red" are quite good though. Pretty much after this is the downfall of the band, falling into either inconsistency, banality, and idiocy (pretty much in that order as well).

Whew! That was fun, reading all those posts...some HS flashbacks brought on by all the Rush talk...and I must second the mention of 'Exile on Main Street', one of the best albums ever IMO...and glad to see so much Led Zeppelin love.
As for the Beatles, conspicuously absent but for one post...lately I have been into the basic, drums-guitar-bass pop music that descended from them, e.g. Lemonheads, Oasis, Strokes. Also listening to a lot of bluegrass lately (Allison Krause, Gillian Welch in particular)
Can't narrow down to one or two songs for any of the above, I'm afraid...
