So what's your favorite video game? What genre is it and would you think another INTP would like it? My favorite from way back when is Sid Meir's Alpha Centauri, a really underappreciated game. It's a turn-based strategy game like the Civilization games, but you're colonizing a planet in the future. It requires a lot of patience and dedication, and you can easily spend many hours on it. Right now I'm putting a lot of time into Rome: Total War.

Just one game out of so many genres and platforms would be extremely difficult and incomplete so...
Chrono Trigger (SNES) was the best RPG I've played; variance of interesting characters and plotlines, conceptual combination of science, myth and history, and the gameplay was especially awesome for the hardcore rpg-gamer (not to mention Akira Toriyama designs! :D)
Honorable mentions go to Final Fantasies IV, VI and X (this will upset any FFVII fan, but I just can't like the characters in that one as much) and Dragon Warrior III and IV (NES).
I've liked games like Halo and adventure games that require a lot of in-the-moment action, and though I liked Starcraft it got tiring. Besides, I don't play/buy much PC games anymore :( (bad for school and bank).

Ugh, this is difficult. Civilization III is defintely up there, along with Master of Orion I. X-COM: UFO Defense brings back great memories, along with X-Wing (along with the sequels, TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance. I didn't play X-Wing vs. Tie). 1830 is an obscure kinda game that I played a lot. And of course Simcity 2000, how could I forget the hours I spent on that. Or my first MUDs Gemstone and DragonRealms, that introduced me to that wonderful world. Final Fantasy VII was a masterpiece as well as Daggerfall and Fallout (I and II). Who here remembers Commander Keen, as well as Kosmo, and all those Apogee Games. (What was the one with the kid in the PJs with a slingshot??) And of course, the best FPSes out there, Doom, Castle Wolfenstein, and Half-Life. (or at least the ones that hold the most memories) ANd hey, I have a poster for WIng Commander III in my room, I must have liked that. And I like WIng Commander IV also. Don't talk to me about Wing Commander Prophecy though.
How do you expect me to pick one game out of that?

Heh, I know it's really hard. I have so many other games that I could call my favorites, some that both of you have listed. But I generally prefer RTS games over others.

Star Ocean: The Second Story was my favorite game, it was an RPG. The characters were deep and intense, the battle system wasnt boring (you could set the starting formation have 2 other AI controlled attackers beat up on an enemy and protect the magic caster in the back), I also liked the way the characters would shout when they cast magic "ENERGY ARROW!" and the music was superb. The ending could be shaped depending on how the other characters interacted with each other in the 'private action' scenarios that you could choose to take. (My dad also wants me to get him Star Ocean 3 for X-Mas)
I also liked Armored Core series games where you could customize every single part of your mech (such as the generator, legs, arms and even the targeting system!) and go on mercenary missions or arena battles, and the story would shift slightly depending on which corporations you worked for. Overboost, chaff dispensers, vertical missile launchers, energy rifles, laser swords, rockets, it had everything. You could even customize your AC's paint scheme, make your own emblem and even name it! And the battles were somewhere in between the overly-stale Mechwarrior and the over-the-top Virtual On (or gundams if you watch anime)
Shadowrun (Sega Genesis version) was also an awesome game, a futuristic mercenary RPG with multiple possibilities (ie: You could be a 'decker' and knock out corporate security systems or do espionage by plugging yourself in and attacking certain nodes, or you could be a fighter or even shaman) It was mostly non-linear. Upgrading your weapons, decks, and magics was awesome. I'd be the fighter, have another fighter tag along, and have a shaman in the back row using armor or stop magic. We would both be equipped with broomsweeper shotguns and clear out those pesty cop stations out in no time flat during a prison break mission. The only thing that Deus Ex trumps it in is graphics, sound and music (but probably only thanks to advances in technology!) but definitely not gameplay!
The Ace Combat series was also fun.

2600: Yars' Revenge
NES: Contra
SNES: Rock'n'Roll Racing
PS1: Wipeout XL
PS2: Wipeout Fusion (Not as good as XL tho, haven't played much PS2)
PC:
90-95: Tie Fighter
96-00: Fallout
00-04: Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Honorable Mention: Doom, Quake I DM, Tekken, Soul Blade, Privateer 2, Baldur's Gate
I appreciate style as much as gameplay (Visuals, level design, characters, music, etc.).

Oh man. So many classics already listed: Alpha Centauri, TIE Fighter, SimCity 2000, Final Fantasy 7, Yars' Revenge.
I'd have to go with:
Atari: Defender
Commodore: California Games/Beamrider
NES: CastleVania III
N64: Madden 99
PS1: NCAA Football 2000
PS2: Madden 2003
PC: TIE Fighter/Red Alert 2
Overall: I love EA Sports games. The notion of building a dynasty and micromanaging it appeals to me. I also dig sim games, both real-time and turn-based.

PC: The Homeworld franchise (Pretty ships flying around in space, blowing each other up), Quake (First time I played LAN Deathmatch. "Who's the one sniping with that rocket launcher?", "It's Jim.", "We are coming for you Jim".), Nethack (Your dog can sit and roll over? I taught mine to shoplift)
Commodore 64: Spore (I'm a grey blip, shooting my way out of a level full of bright pulsing green blips.)

I've spent too much time on the Civilization series. Civ III is still enthralling several years after its initial release. Currently, I play Madden 2005 often on the Xbox.
I couldn't find a way to slow down my computer enough, but Death Track was my favorite video game of all time. Race car driving and blowing up other cars.
Now I would probably have to say Grand Theft Auto Vice City

Final Fantasy Tactics(SRPG) was an incredible game. It was hard as hell but I enjoyed every second of it. The game just felt so complete.
Mario Kart 64(Kart Racer) was another good one.
Super Samsh Bros.(Fighting) had me and my freinds up for hours.
Diablo II: Lord of Destruction(MMORPG) was a really fun game for the pc. I spent a lot of my time in front of the computer screen.
Final Fantasy X(RPG) wasn't the best Final Fantasy but it looked awesome.
Disgaea:Hour of Darkness(SRPG) will keep you playing for hours. The max level a character can reach is 9999.
Soul Calibur I/II were incredible. The best fighting games I have ever played.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 is the best skateboarding game I've played.(haven't played THUG 1 or 2)
Poke'mon Blue(GB ) it may seem kiddy but it was incredibly addictive
Tetris(GB ) need I say more?
I'm sure I'll think of more later.
There are so many and I am sure I am forgetting some obvious favs, but here is a quick list off the top of my head:
Legend of Zelda (nintendo 64 and game cube)
Kings Quest (pc)
Night Trap (sega CD!)
Pong (Atari)
Oregon Trail (Apple)
Mortal Kombat (Sega Saturn)

Shadowrun (Sega Genesis version)
I played the pen and paper version. Had a convoluted rulebook, but it was good times. I was a decker (of course), and the kind of stuff the my party and I did was friggin awesome. He ended up doing a kind of Transporter thing, saving a kidnapped girl because he felt sorry for her and accidentally getting putang, to the rest of the party. The best part about it, is that they didn't know it was me. Anyways, sorry about the tangent, this is about video games right?

Planescape: Torment.
Absolutely. I lived this game.
Others:
- Mega Man trilogy. Me and my best friend would spend every wednesday afternoon playing mega man on his NES. We had a special NES folder where we wrote down all the passwords and we'd speculate in playtime about which weapons would be most useful where, things like that. It's almost ridiculous I spent so much time playing this considering how easy I finish games like that now on the emulator.
- Civilisation. The original. I remember one day deciding I was going to translate the entire civilopedia into Dutch, just because then, I would have made the game even more awesome. I gave up when I discovered I didn't actually speak as much english as I though, and having to look up words in the dictionary wasn't fun. I played this a lot, you could always start all over again after winning.
- Redhook's Revenge. I'd play this game over and over with a friend. It's an electronic boardgame with trivia questions. We eventually knew every single question by heart, and whoever won the game was pretty much decided by random chance alone. Yet we always came back for more. I still have this one on my harddisk.
- Deadly Rooms of Death. I feel almost guilty mentioning this game to this crowd, because once you start playing this, it will not let you go until you're done. I won't say anything more. Just these two things:
A) www.drod.net - it's free
B) Most intellectually challenging AND creative game in the world.
In fact, I think I'll start a topic on this game alone somewhere, so we can all talk about it.

My sisters recently got the Mega Man collection for the GameCube. They were all over the internet looking for cheats to beat Mega Man 1. I proceeded to beat the first five games in one sitting.

Geez... most of mine already got listed... Chrono Trigger, FF #s 1 3 4 5<(you can find a translated rom if you look hard enough... it's worth it. Job System! Woo!) 6 7... and I haven't really played much newer. Favorite was 3/6 (us/j). Fps... Doom, Heretic (it's like Doom, only medieval... still by id, too...) Quake 1, 2, and I just got Half-Life (the first one... I'm behind in some areas.) Does anyone else remember Fallout? I loved Fallout... 1 and 2, anyway... didn't care for Tactics.
Lemme see... I also like Crimsonland (http://arcade.reflexive.com/crimsonland/) and Stepmania (http://www.stepmania.com/stepmania/)... the free computer version of DDR.
More when I think of them.
All the Zeldas and Metroids. Bejeweled.

I know not a lot of people have heard of Settlers of Catan. Someone made an online version (he is doing his PhD and the "robots" you can play against are his thesis) and you can play against other people or computers.
Its all strategy so its pretty fun and very addictive.

Did you really like that game. I hated it of all the FF series. I wasn't interested in the story line and the characters were unispiring.
Personally I thought 9 was very fun. It was very traditional and it was pretty easy but atleast I liked the characters.
My main problem with 8 was the junctioning system(I had the same problem with the materia system) In battles the characters were the same except for limits which made for some boring battles. In 9 the characters had their place in battles and in the story.
FFX was a beautiful game. I mean Beautiful. It was my first FF and man was it a good intro to the series. The characters were awesome. Auron was a complete badass. Lulu was just cool in every way. Yuna was a a female lead I actually cared about. Blitzball was incredibly fun also.
FFX-2 was an abomination to the series. I don't know what the hell squenix was thinking but they dropped the ball. The story was a joke. Batteling was very repetitive. All I had to do was hit x. There were a ton of crappy minigames to distract you from the crappier story. The endong boss was WAY to easy and uninspired. Did they even try to make a good game.
I think FF7 was overated. I guess at the time it was great. I still don't think it was the end all game. My main problem is that they killed of a character that I really liked and wanted to use. It was a great game but it did have problems.
Final Fantasy Tactics was perfect. Yes I said it was perfect. Everything in that game was awesome. The level of detail was huge. There were just so many different factors that you had to consider. Even your astrological sign had an effect in the game. The game was a challenge. One mistake could lose a fight for you. The game required though and skill and it made you want to keep playing. As much as I complained when I played it I didn't stop. The story was well done. There was a huge amount of stuff to do and there was a variety of job classes.
FF1 and FF2 were good games. I emphasize were because now they seem very outdated. They are fun. If you haven't played them you should.

On another note, my pops got me a strategy game pack for x-mas (AOE Gold, Risk II, Civ II, Majesty Gold). Majesty Gold is the first game I tried (playing it now), and OMG its pretty good. I'm almost to the northern expansion missions and I can barely get myself back to do anything useful on my PC cuz i'm spending so much time on the missions. The Expert level missions actually require you to think and come up with a unique strategy (and sometimes take a different path on the tech tree) for every mission, which is more then I can say for most RTS's.

*start rant*
My turn to be square fanboy.
In terms of story, FFVII may possibly have been the best yet. I actually cried while playing taht game. I don't want yo give any spoils but it was amazing. Also, same for FFIX.
As far as FFVIII I think it wasn't bad. The graphics were an improvement and the story wasn't bad. Junctioning was tolerable and I liked the characters. They were well developed in my opinion. FFVIII put more focus on the characters as individuals, all of them. I also could relate to Squall almost perfectly. If I i were a character in a game, I would be Squall. Especially in his relations to Rinoa. Also, I had my hardest laugh playing a game ever. When you first board the Ragnarok and it's just Squall and Rinoa. That was HILARIOUS. Squall was so inept in that area and those are things I would say, so i found it HYSTERICAL.
Now, FFX. Good graphics, but I found the story uninspiring. I found Tidus to be a whiny child and I generally liek to have strong characters, maybe start off week but at least become stronger by the end. Tidus was a wuss til the end. He ALMOST came off cool, but fell short in the end. With his gay quote. And for badasses, Snake owns Auron, and so does Cloud. NOTE: Master Chief is NOT a badass. He's a mindless soldier. Nuff said.
And I agree with most, X-2 sucked major ass.
Kingdom Hearts. Didn't like the disney at first, but it ended up well in the end, with and inspiring motivational story. Sora had Haley Joel Osmond's voice, and was 15 and was more of a man than Tidus. That was not meant to the belittling of Sora, he's awesome. The battle sytem was a refreshing change and got the job done and worked well with the storytelling. It was a great game.
I could go on and on about games. But assuming you read this far, I'll save you the trouble of reading more.
Please don't be offended by anything I've said here. I'm just very zealous about the subject.
Thank you.

I was very angry when FFVII's first disc ended. It did make me really hate seph but a part of the game felt like it was missing afterwords.
When I said Auron was a badass I was comparing him to only FF chars.
I guess VIII had well developed chars but the only ones I liked were Zell and Irvine. I just didn't seem to care about the others.
I really enjoyed the story in IX. I enjoyed everything in IX. Vivi was super cool. Freya was awesome. All the characters in the game were great. Quina was wierd but entertaining.

I only say this because it is still going strong well over a decade after I last worked on it! I was playing it again over Xmas - still the same old magic.
I am only one of a number of contributors but I have to be biased for something that still has my name amongst those on the opening screen and is still played by many!

As for more 'traditional' favourites, I still have a fondness for colonization. Like civilisation but with a tighter focus on North America.

I think FF7 was overated. I guess at the time it was great. I still don't think it was the end all game. My main problem is that they killed of a character that I really liked and wanted to use. It was a great game but it did have problems.
I think it is a bit overrated but I still think it's a great game. Probably my #2 or #3 favorite FF. As for Aeris dying, eh. It never really bothered me, and I never got why it was such a big deal to some people. She wasn't much stronger/weaker than anyone else battle-wise, and her death was an integral part of the story -- it made it what it was.
I would have to agree that it's a great game, but I don't like it QUITE as much as you. The story is hard to follow and battles can be really aggravating at times. But overall the feel of the game is awesome (even if I don't totally remember who is who and what's going on) and it's generally pretty damn fun. I still have game saves of it at over 100 hours. Accumulate! Deep Dungeon! :P
(BTW, have you played Disgaea or other games in that series? It looks really good -- levels go to 10000!)
FF1 and FF2 were good games. I emphasize were because now they seem very outdated. They are fun. If you haven't played them you should.
The real FF2, or the US one on super nintendo (4)? I have FF 1&2 Dawn of Souls for my gba and I am enjoying FF2 a lot. It's the first new (new to me, that is) rpg I've played in a long time that I've liked.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
In terms of story, FFVII may possibly have been the best yet. I actually cried while playing taht game. I don't want yo give any spoils but it was amazing. Also, same for FFIX.
I would say that if I ignore my bias towards 16 bit-era games, 7's story was the best, with 6 being #2 (in reality I like 6 better). I don't get how/why people like 9's story. I played fairly far into it, and I really liked the in-game environments a lot (the music, the feeling of "atmosphere"), but damn, I fucking HATED those characters.
Heh, don't remember that. I did play all the way through it back in the day, but just like 9, I realized a bit later that I did not care at all about the characters or story, and that I had mostly played because the gameplay was fairly fun. I thought junctioning was pretty damn cool -- fighting on the heaven/hell (I think that's what they're called) islands and going around the world to draw certain spells from monsters was fun. I thought Squall was an emo pansy whiner bitch. Not meaning to insult you of course. :P The other characters were either annoying as hell (Zell) or I just didn't give a crap about them. It makes me think back to games like 6 where I really felt like I cared about the characters. They mostly seemed cool to me.
I never did play FFX just because I could tell from research that I probably wouldn't like it, and I don't think I could bring myself to invest any time or money in a game with Disney characters.

Oh and Zeitgeist your avatar is awesome. Do you know of other avatars for any of the other characters.
well actually, i found this on www.altavista.com. Go to image search and type in what you want. If you find somethin and it's too big you can downsize it with ifranview from www.download.com, which is what I did for this picture.

I've always had addictions to community based computer games. In 1994, I was hooked on dial-in bulletboards. These where computers, set up locally on a modem that some guy would have in his house. You'd dial up and you could post on boards and what not and play text based games. In 95, I got addicted to Role-Playing on America Online and was part of "Rhydin" a world which was entirely role-play, each person acting out their part through text. In 96, I got into MUDing (Think of Everquest or DAOC, without any graphics.) I MUD'ed on Realms of the Dragon for four years. In 2000, I got into graphical games. Warcraft and Diablo where my favorites for awhile, then I discovered Everquest. I was addicted to EQ for 4 long years. Every moment I was awake, even at work, was spent with Everquest as my main priority. I lost a job because of surfing EQ sites at work....which was cool...8 months of unemployment so I could play EQ :) About a year ago I stopped playing EQ and got into Strategy games. The Total War Series (Medievel and especially Rome) and Civ 3 just totally kick ass. Recently I've played those two as well as most new titles (Dawn of War, Hitman 2, Doom 3, World of Warcraft, Star Wars Battlefront (This is my prefered first person shooter when I'm in the mood for one), Sid Meier's Pirates (Same guy that wrote the original Commadore 64 version and also creater of Civ 3) and quite a few others.

But thats just my opinion.
I will ignore your anime comment completely (There are no pedos in Tokyo! They are commiting suicide at the gates! Their stomachs will burn in Hell!) and I'll agree with you about how Japanese style RPGs are rather dull.
I have played an ungodly number of games, and there are only three Japanese style RPGs that I can actually stand. Final Fantasy I, Phantasy Star II, and Skies of Arcadia. Both Skies of Arcadia and Phantasy Star II have incredible storylines (enough for me to ignore my normal pet peeves), and Final Fantasy I? I have no idea why I like it so much.
For me to like a game, it must have these things, in order.
1. The ability to make your own character. This is the most important one. If I wanted to play someone elses, then I'll go read a book or watch a movie or something. For me, games aren't just games, they're mental experiments, and these experiments need subjects. If I like a game, it's usually because I created a particularly interesting character to play it with. (For instance, KotOR would simply not be KotOR without Nile-Lana, my dear ESFP Dark Side boy!)
2. It must not force a story on me whether I like it or not. But it also must have a good story. I truely adore games with complex storylines, but I prefer complex worlds to complex storylines. In short, open-endedness. But I don't mind stories if they give you a number of very good reasons to do it.
3. Pretty high quality readily avalible user-made content. Not nessesary for me to like a game, but essential if I am to be completely addicted to it.
Yeah. I don't like games where their story distracts from my story. I don't care that it's a meaningful story! I don't care that it's got intriguing realistic characters! I want to play through this game as a magic using dwarf who is secretly a member of a cabel of necromancers that use their art for good and advance the rights of necromancers everywhere or something . . .
So, name games? Indeed I shall!
I'm hopelessly addicted to Morrowind. I've been playing it ever since it came out, and it's still as fun as it was the first time around! It's sad how much I love this game. Of course, by now it's more mod and less Morrowind, but that makes it even better!
I love Neverwinter Nights. While it hasn't earned the status that Morrowind has, it show potential. It's lots of fun, especially all the modules. Modules are fun. I love 'em to bits. The original campain is nice too.
Then there's Knights of the Old Republic. Awesome awesome game. I am still angry at them for not realising KotOR II to the PC until Febuary, even when KotOR II came out for the Xbox in December. Grr you! Grr you! At least it's got a Zabrak. A hawt Zabrak. And an Echani. Yay Echani.
ANYWAY I love this game. I already said that. The storyline "is like whoa" and the characters (I actually likt it if there are other characters to interact with my own) are simply wonderful. Fun game. I like it.
Those are the three current games I'm playing. There are tons of other ones, but I'm tired right now, and I don't want to bore you all by listing all of the games I ever liked. (Oh! And Oregon Trail! That was a great game, though I barely remember any of it since I was four when I was playing it . . .)
Yeah. Gamer here. w00t w00t.

Yeah, I just remembered that Kotor is one of my favorite games of all time. I considered buying the sequel for Xbox but decided to hold out till February, as PC games are always better. Ah, Oregon Trail... there's nothing like shooting small animals in your youth. I'm noticing a lot of games here that I like. w00t.

Its comments like those that bring out the inner fanboy in me. I'm not going to spark a debate about this because I partly agree with you. I see the problem being the lack of originality. The characters do seem stereotypical and turn-based battling is begining to show its age. But there is no garuntee that a game will do well unless it has Halo or Final Fantasy in the title. Squenix is playing it safe by sticking with their formula that has worked again and again. While I don't think I'll get blown away by any FF coming out in the future I still find them fun and will continue to play them.

Every INTP, or for that matter every intuitive perceiver, MUST play Planescape: Torment. It is, with only feeble competition, the best game I've ever played. It's chock-full of bizarre ideas and occurences, has a completely abstract playing universe, and the plot is of better quality than most artsy drama movies. The very beginning area, I think, scares people away, since it can be downright boring, but after that, every minute of this game is sheer joy. It doesn't have much "action," so sensing types would be turned off strongly, but the storytelling is so rich and interesting that I don't think it'd matter to most of you. Please, please play this game. I wish I could forget it and play it all over again. I don't mean to get long-winded and preachy, but this game is truly underappreciated, and as an INTP, I think you'd all love it.

Finished the campaign mode with Insane difficulty level, and starting to play skirmishes n Insane level. Now this is more like it! Insane level is much much more interesting and challenging because the enemy attack in large numbers quickly although as usual, a large phalanx of gun turrets and missile launchers is often enough to repel them, or at least last long enough to create a diversion while you attack their base. Also capturing the critical locations seem to stall or disourage the enemy from attacking allowing me to amass a large army with the most powerful units complete with upgrades that just run roughshod over the relatively defenseless enemy bases.

:D
You've had that, oh, three days? You must be really tackling that game. I usually play on Harder and usually win, I should try Insane again. Last time I tried it was just... insane. I do pride myself on at least holding out until the enemy won a critical location victory. I use the Space Marines faction almost always, I assume you do as well. Sometimes I just waste time with the Army Painter though...

I am like that. I have to play out games to the end continuously or I would quickly lose interest on it and never finish the game at all; so I play whenever I have free time and I am home. Then when I have perfected the game (i.e don't lose anymore), then I move on.
I just love trying out different strategies against the insane level enemy AI.
So far the only one that works - regardless of cation - is to put up an effective defense first before attacking or securing a large number of strategic locations (which later become indefensible), because the AI comes up with more units (and with better weapons) given the same time and resources; presumably because it has practically little delay between accumulation of enough power/resources and implementing a unit upgrade or creation.
A nice trick that is very useful early in the game is that the enemy AI can be baited into attacking your stronghold or equivalent structure (which is the hardest structure to destroy) by making it the first structure that is seen (and therefore attacked) by enemy units and in the process they get decimated by strategically placed defensive structures or units equiped with heavy bolters in hold ground mode just behind the stronghold.
I actually like the Eldars the best. I don't like melees and I prefer to destroy the enemy from a distance. Their upgraded defense turrets which fire some sort of plasma ball also make short work of enemy vehicles. (Orc and Space marines missile launchers are much less effective). The wraiths carry very powerful long range lasers - good for destroying enemy structures from a distance ... and the council of Seers reminds me of Jedi knights although they don't seem to be effective.

I'm the 15th in the world in Crimsonland. And I've only played it for about a week (I have a flu). 7 776 xxx or something is my score on 'survival'. Plasma shotgun rulz! :)
It's been a while... beat it a while back, then got involved in some other game... They refresh the list pretty often, btw. I'm gonna have to recommend the pulse gun, though. Properly perked up... it's ridiculous.

I have also being playing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords ( to give the game it's ridiculously verbose title, just incase we were unsure of the associated IP).
 So far so good but not nearly as gripping as he original which put all other recent Star Wars related products to shame.

Seriously though, games I have enjoyed that have not been mentioned (much) yet: Star Control 2, Arx Fatalis. And other classic games like Lemmings, Keen etc
Otherwise, I've wasted many hours on the more common games like Morrowind, Civilization 2, Gran Turismo, Quakes, Half life, GTA, Deus Ex, Warcrafts etc

Speaking of video games... I procured and beat Half-life 2 recently... and the ending... well, frankly, it pissed me the hell off. I understand why, and I understand that it's a setup for a sequel... but dammit, I don't like not knowing how things turned out, and I wasn't exactly expecting it to end there, either. It was like "Whoops, snuck that one up on ya, eh? hahahahahahaha buy the next game which may not even tell you any of the answers. And we don't even know when it's going to come out."

Hmmm... Probably the urban warfare part towards the end, where Dog is kicking ass and not bothering to take names... with the tripods and expendable troops. It was one of the harder sections... but playing with the rocket launcher was really fun.
I don't really have the time/inclination to make a really good mod... but I did find one to let me play with the physics pretty well... it's called Gary's Mod (http://www.garry.tv/garrysmod/).

doom3 -- It's a good game. Sadly, it's short. I found myself actually playing this game and not quitting.
Tiberian Sun -- My "hard to admit I liked it" game. Me and a friend would play one skirmish a weekend. It took about 6 hours to complete, but once it was over, you were fulfilled. (I haven't played it in ages.)
Serious Sam -- A modern day impulse shooter. A perfect doom feeling.
Zelda: Link to the Past -- What more is there to say? A wonderful balance of action and story. I enjoyed a lot of the dark world, especially in the ice dungeon. (All the switches to get through the level was great)
Chrono Trigger -- I sat down and played it straight through in one day. A very good story, and very nice party system.
But the best game? It's Tetris. Hands down.

I know I already posted here, but I've been thinking about video games as art recently. This could be on a visual level, on a storytelling or literature type of level, or even with music or sound effects. This isn't really focusing on gameplay, but good gameplay can certainly immerse the user into the art even more. Right now I've come up with a few:
Planescape : Torment - Brilliant writing in an interactive medium. Should be studied in school.
Grim Fandango - Great writing, but also complemented with a certain graphical style that really envelops the player. The music is also extremely memorable. Combines all of the mediums into a great interactive experience. Because of this, it ranks up there with the best movies in my mind.
World of Warcraft - This is here for one reason alone: Graphics. The art design is asbolutely stunning. Sometimes really enveloping.
American McGee's Alice - Music and art design are extremely impressive and occasionally very chilling. Gameplay, less so.
Zelda : Windwaker - The graphics are almost surreal. Quite transforming, in a sort of impressionistic sense.
I'm sure there are some more I could think of if I tried. Add some games that impressed you on an artistic level!
Ico is art, Ico is better than art - wonderful surreal crumbling castle ruins, fantastic animation, vast and spectacular scenery, the sounds just compliment the visuals to a T and the whole thing just reeks of great art direction. :)

Just a few of the top of my head.
FF7 had a great soundtrack. I really enjoying listening to the music in the game. The Cosmo Canyon theme will always be remebered.

Prince of Persia:Sands of Time really impressed me. The prince was just so acrobatic. I had fun watching others playing the game. The things he did were just cool.

Just looking at wind waker was a blast. The smoke and the fire is what got me drooling.
Just looking at wind waker was a blast. The smoke and the fire is what got me drooling.
Watching the waves subtlely break upon the shore.
The flickering flames giving off distorting heat waves.
The way those big bad guys with the staffs are just animated perfectly.
The way everything is moving, grass blowing in the wind, seagulls spiralling above, crabs scurry along the beach and then your boat yawns as the sun sets upon the horizon.
oh.. and the massive draw distance helps convey the sheer size and scope of the game.
I like all Zelda's....reason enough to buy a Cube :)

The next Zelda will be OOT in style, but it does in fact use the Wind Waker engine (which people don't tend to notice...like in the trailor, one of the enemies has identical staff swinging animation, and the clouds and sky looks really good, similar to WW's dynamic clouds and transforming colors). I don't think they're doing voices for this one.

It seems like the common theme on this thread is that INTP's appreciate games on an intellectual level. We are not impressed by mediocrity in any form, and so always demand more. I'd have to say my faves are:
NES: Super Mario Bros. 3 & Contra Series & Tetris
SEGA: Sonic 3 & Phantasy Star 4
N64: MarioKart64 & Mario64 & DK64
PSx: FFX2 & Devil May Cry & Jak n Daxter Series
Xbox: SSX3
PC: Civ II & III

I don't remember off the top of my head, I'm not all that great at Ikaruga, I haven't played it nearly enough. I can only chain all of level 1 together. I haven't put in enough time to learn the patterns for the rest of the levels, and I don't know if I will ever get around to that. The game is ingenious though...

I've spent way too much time playing the civilization games. I like the turn based strategy because i feel like there's even more strategy then RTS games, and i can stop and start more easily. I also play a lot of madden every year for a couple months after the new one comes out. There's a lot of strategy when you are playing other people. And of course Contra. Best time: 11 min. 57 sec.
