good idea. and, i'll be hosting the SHITTY annual meet-up in "west 'by god' virginia". it's for the poor and/or class-resistant and will be funded by a bartering system. you bring booze, and i'll provide a floor for sleeping (the extra bedrooms will be party prizes) and food.

(damn, i wish i was kidding)

We have family in WV. We were in Pipestem once at the lookout tower, and met this woman who told us a story of calling the hospital to check on her ailing uncle. The nurse she spoke to said "Who are you calling about?" Then when she told the nurse her uncle's name, the nurse said "Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit! That's my uncle, too!" (She didn't really say the part about the butter, but I thought it would be a cute West Virginny thing to say.)

i used to live close to pipestem. and, as cute and charming as that biscuit part could have been, the real conversation usually goes, "oh! he's my uncle too. did you hear about how he got sick? well, let me fill you in..."

until you want to blow your brains out for ever giving in to that feeling of obligation and calling, and instead are stuck with pretending to listen while you're really imagining someone calling about this nurse next week and that story starting with, "did you hear about how she ended up in here? well, it started out with a phone call from his niece..."

You just have to trick them into it. Get them to think they are just accomidating their guests by a jaunt over to Wal Mart the inn at Bywater, and then just a little further, just to see what's over the next hill, you know. Check out the action in the fields, maybe get them to talk about their fine tobacco growing traditions. Until you get them to Bree. Then you get them drunk, clobber them over the head with something big and heavy, and by the time they wake up, you're practically in the Misty Mountains.

Way to SP it up!

I may be a square, but at least I'm not using insults to manipulate other people into being stupid. :P

not that there's anything wrong with hobbits
Okay I will NTP it up for you.

At this point in time, this SUPREME meetup is off in the future.

Wouldn't it be better to have this meetup, of potentially many people, in the most enjoyable place possible?

Don't get bogged down in details now. Sure NOW you don't have money, NOW no one has planned a road trip, NOW no one has rented a party bus, NOW no one has reserved a block of rooms on the Strip, NOW plenty of details haven't been worked out.

Think outside the box. Hold this meetup in an interesting place, we can work out the details and logisitics later. If we force ourselves outside our comfort zone, I'm sure we can come up with some interesting solutions. Open up to the possibilities.

Fuckin' hobbits!

Vegas for introverts? I'm still struggling with that one.

Vegas kicks ass. I can't imagine why anyone would go out of their way to go to Chicago... I could see NY, but only cause of great hubness followed by stuff to do.

Nothing tops vegas for stuff to do. Especially if you don't spending some cash (doesn't have to be a lot but you can't mosey around in Vegas as easily).

Oh, and if anyone wants to bring the SO and needs a bargaining chip? Hugo's Cellar. Very nice restaurant... expect to pay a bit, but... yah. Oh, the spa at the Luxor was very nice too.

ok that's much better. the main non-detail problem now is that I'd much rather go to Vegas than NYC but it's losing miserably. Maybe we should try a supplementary Vegas vs. NYC poll

Edit: or a new poll in which you can choose multiple options

The money and the bus would work itself out if we just stole the thing. We should get cracking on that now, so we can have all the documentation when we need it. And until we need it, I think we've found the perfect place to store it...

i've found my ride!
Right, digesthisickness? I mean, no one would come looking for it in West Virginia. And I'm sure you've got a nice secret place to hide things until they are needed.

Whichever city wins out, I'd say make the meetup off in the future. Say, no earlier than next fall.

This gives people time to make plans, take off work, save money, steal buses, whatever they need to do.

We could even put it off till 2008. Nothing wrong with long range planning.

Doesn't matter.

That is the whole reason I started railing on people for picking Chicago out of convenience. I want people to look beyond their narrow needs/wants and plan something that someone not even around now would want to attend. Something that would get people that have left the site to attend.

hell... no one even comes looking for WV, so you betcha! all i'd have to do is disguise it, and that's as easy as just taking the tires off, putting it on blocks, and renting it out to a family (thus making some trip money) during the interim.

I admit that Vegas is more interesting than Chicago, but Chicago is not just a larger version of Toledo, Ohio. Lots of restaurants, some of them world famous. Blues clubs. Hookers, for sure, if you've actually got the interest and money for that. Better comedy than many places - ( Saturday Night Live recruits from the Improv Olympics. ) Architecture. A waterfront. Museums. Subways and bus transport that is fairly comprehensive. Fancy hotels, if you want that, or hotels that are near the transportation grid which are fairly inexpensive.

In the city itself the red light "district" ( there isn't one ) with a couple exceptions, is restricted to a few mostly sleazy run-down little clubs. For some reason there is more support for that kind of thing out in the burbs.I hear that in some cities they manage these places so that its a more classy experience, and so partially attract a mixed crowd. Not here.

The wind here in Winter is nasty enough that they call it "the hawk".

Of course, it can be refreshing on a summer day, and this "supreme" meeting might be on a summer day. It's getting very loosey goosey when its actually going to happen. In the meantime it's going to be regional meetings I guess, and we'll have to see if we can out-do the Macaroni Lounge setting here in the windy city, as Mac was sorta encouraging, if that meeting ever shapes up.

Some of the emphasis should be placed on "things to do" but some should be on we ourselves just actually accomplishing it. Hopefully that will have some entertainment value of its own.

I like Chicago. I lived there. This is bumfuck nowhere compared to Chicago.

I used to be able to find anything I could possibly want in three blocks. Anything. Sushi. Bras. A museum. A slum. Some mansions. Anything. But they roll up the sidewalks at eleven, which is unforgiveable.

The only parts of Nevada worth mentioning have 24 hour all you can eat sushi and legal prostitution, which does make it slightly more civilized, I guess. But I can't afford to go, and Chicago will probably be a short drive. Maybe.

Unless I end up in Reno or Tubac or Pheonix much sooner than I expect. Or end up in Pittsburgh unexpectedly. My life, so messy.

I have an idea, why not have three meet ups in people's homes and webcam chats linking em or something? That way we could mingle, ander over to the webcam and say hi to our international buddies and the dudes partying across the country. It'd be awesome if we could get thirty or forty of us joining the "party," even if it's in three smaller groups.

Call it "the Silver Meet-Up" vs. "the Supreme Platinum" or what have you. I have already met with fc and Rivercrow and Sdalek here. Just missed Corporate Whore by a whisker the other week. How about this:

Start a thread for each of these three cities and let people figure out where they want to go. Put a date poll in after a few posts (after some dates are suggested). This gives people a chance to talk specifics, this also will let us know who would go to multiple locations for example, I could go to New York, Las Vegas or Chicago but I prefer Chicago. If the other two threads had more activity then Chicago then I may jump in there, but if I'm only forced to pick one, it is Chicago.

So you start a thread
-People start posting dates...
1st weekend of June
Last Weekend of July
Last Weekend of August
then put in a (CHECKBOX poll)

Some people can only go to one (Kuranes in Chicago) some people could go to all three... in either case, let those interested in those locations haggle about times, places, and all that. One solid winner may come out of that better then arbitrary voting (as people choose to go to the Las Vegas and the New York or some other combination due to time/place constraints).

If not one winner then there isn't any reason to prohibit all three locations, especially when the climate of these three places are so different. Chicago would be great to visit in June, Las Vegas in November. No reason why some people wouldn't go two different places

Jimmy Carter was on Jay Leno last night. He said that he and his wife like vacationing in Panama. I've never heard what its like as a vacation spot - just "See the canal", "remember Noriega?" etc. I imagined that seeing the canal locks in operation might be good for an hour or so, if you timed your look-see visit right.

Jay said that he heard Jimmy Carter flew like a regular passenger, even though he was a former president. He didn't ask "Coach or first class?"
"Wouldn't one of those corporate jet outfits just call you up?" asked Jay.
"Not since my book came out" joked Jimmy.

Here are some potential events that could be incorporated into a Las Vegas meetup:

First Fridays Gallery/Pub Crawl (http://www.firstfriday-lasvegas.org/)

A Saturday afternoon trip to the Valley of Fire state park. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valley_of_Fire_State_Park) It's about 45 minutes northeast of the city. I can drive, but someone else (maybe more than one, depending on how many people show) would have to be up for renting a car or driving to LV for the meetup. Stargazing is good there if we were to stay until the evening.

Catching an Uberschall show at the Double Down Saloon. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uberschall) This usually happens on the last Sunday night of the month, so it would be an either/or thing with First Friday, and it would require people being able to stay until Monday. It's extremely cool to see, though (and free), and the Double Down Saloon itself is a pretty cool dive bar, complete with an Asteroids machine and a great jukebox.

The fountains at Bellagio. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Bellagio-front.jpg) These are best viewed in the evening, when the sun is down and they are lit up. Also free. They also have a great gelato place located conveniently close to the street where the fountains are best viewed.

Live music and a kind of cool atmosphere at this Irish pub (http://www.mcmullansirishpub.com/). There are lots of other Irish pub possibilities as well. We are innundated with them, really.

Incredibly low-stakes gambling at The Western Hotel and Casino (http://www.westernhotelcasino.com/), the biggest shithole, crackhead-infested, beers in cans and drinks in plastic cups, toilet of a casino right in the middle of the shittiest part of downtown Las Vegas. Still, though, $1 blackjack. Or maybe $2. An easy walk from the main area of Downtown Las Vegas, though very sketchy.

Gameworks (http://www.vegas.com/attractions/on_the_strip/gameworks.html) at the MGM Grand.

Going down to Sunset Park (http://lasvegas.about.com/od/familyhealthliving/a/SunsetPark.htm) and playing bocce ball or some other leisure sport, taking a chess set, some booze, whatever else, and lazing around.

Get EnglshIvy lapdances from hot girls at any of dozens of Las Vegas strip clubs.

Drink, gamble, do a ton of coke and/or other drugs, and wander up and down the Las Vegas strip and see what happens. Bail C-Whore out of jail if necessary.

Anyhow, those are some things that could be done on the cheap. Any would serve as nice anchors for a weekend-long meet-up. The majority of each individual's time would be spent doing what he wants with specific people of his choice and/or family. One or two (optional) group-wide events would just serve to put names to faces and force us to E a little bit. Side events could be stuff like:

Drop attila off at The Adult Superstore (http://www.reviewjournal.com/bestoflv/2006/LongReturns.jsp?bestID=8724&shortList=true) and pick her up a few days later.

Hang out at Hustler's Place (http://forums.intpcentral.com/showpost.php?p=411928&postcount=39) and play Scrabble as per my ideal meet-up (http://forums.intpcentral.com/showthread.php?t=14725), then go out and get hammered.

Hang out in MacGuffin's hotel room and order non-stop booze from room service.

Play poker at the Bellagio's poker room

Go see a show or hit up a great restaurant, of which there is no lack in either department in Las Vegas.

Art galleries and family-friendly attractions (Imax, arcades, roller coasters, and so on) at all of the major casinos.

Get Imperator laid.

I could (and likely would) drive down to Vegas for a SUPREME meet-up, as long as I had enough notice and it was during a weekend.

In terms of $$$, Vegas is probably even more convenient. Plus... Vegas baby!

http://www.tccandler.com/Swingers_Vegas_Baby.jpg

Flights to Chicago and New York form just about anywhere are usually pretty cheap, but junkets to Vegas and flying into McCarran is so much easier and more fun... Hustler makes the most convincing list--plenty of places to escape from, or to, depending on who you are and who you decidedly would like to meet. There is just always someplace easy to go in LVS and something cool to do.

For alternate transportations, Amtrak runs some pretty decent deals up the east coast and back and forth across the countryside, so a multi-destination pass might be the ticket for anyone needing to write a business trip off (stopping in along the way) or to justify their commute by catching a glimpse of family along the railway. They run to all the major cities for those of us posting from the East coast (Chi, DC, NY, ATL), so wherever you live, it is pretty easy to hop on. I have not done the train gig from the West coast, but I know people who do it all the time and they report it is much easier than to fly or go through the hassle of them screwing around on a plane with what you can or cannot carry on (for privacy issues).

And again, there has got to be some merit to the natural geography around Vegas that give it some international "ya gotta se this" clout... The Valley of Fire is awe-mazing (even if you just chill and camp out and wander about to catch glimpses of the petroglyphs and the multi-generational graffiti). Decent camping gear, and I would expect you could have a shindig under the stars for a night that would be talked about for years...

To promote Las Vegas anytime for a meetup seems absolutely right; as a mid point in the continent repleat with blinky lights, showgirls, high class dives and low class delicacies, rooms with rates from by the hour up to the pretty penny five star... from a hosting standpoint the city really does have something of merit to offer to everybody. All we need is one clever card counting INTP good with statistics to play the odds and divine the evolutionary fates for us and maybe even win us a block of comp rooms! Then, everything in the universe would be perfect and all that "stays in vegas" would be good.

MacGuffin, you can certainly PM everyone from DC and organize an RV carpool... :smooch: You and atilla and whomever else is on the east coast to ride along can start to drink--we'll come visit, pick you up and drive. :vroom vroom: That way, no one has to ever set foot in Jersey. :shudder, too: NOTES: I'm gonna be tied up and off posts for a while, but I'll still be lurking about... so somebody please PM if any real plan (or plan of action) finally comes around! Don't forget, somebody needs to pick up Helios and EnglshIvy, too, whenever the big road trip comes around! An INTPcentral party without them would be like life without food.

I have a brilliant idea.

Why not just have a meet up in each of these cities so that the biggest number of people will be able to participate?

That is not a bad idea. Of course having only one place would force more people to show up and interact that wouldn't otherwise happen.

Hustler's list is what I was expecting from a Chicagoland poster for Chicago attractions. Navy pier, Sears Tower, Magnificent Mile, art museums, bars near Wrigley Field, etc...

I have not read the thread but...

We could do this in a very mathematical way.
So where does the users live. Who are the most active. Geography, who has the easiest route (in time) to the center point we are searching. As many parameters as possible.
So a user has different advantages against other users. Lets say an active user with 500 posts is "worth" more than a user with only 13. So to make these two users on the same level the 13 post user have a longer travel time distance to the center. The distances are in time so a flight and a walk could be seen as equivalent. Confusing, hard and annoying to count on this. But it will atleast make most of us happy, and we'll find the perfect location.

Exactly. So why not have two, this way they'll both be able to get to at least some semblance of a grandiose meet-up.

If they are willing to go to one SUPREME meetup, would that not be better?

Two, three, four... meetups in different cities eventually becomes just another ordinary meetup. This thread is about a SUPREME meetup.

I didn't plan on going, so I don't care, but it seems as though narrowing it down to one single location, in a nation 1,000 miles North to South, 2,000 miles East to West, with 300 million people seems to defeat the purpose of getting as many people as possible to go to a meet up. Is there something lacking in an annual meet up? If not, I don't see the point.

Why would a SUPREME meetup destroy the possibility of other meetups in different cities? It doesn't.

Because a SUPREME meetup suggests that it's better than the others, suggesting that there will be a maximum amount of people there, which probaby isn't going to happen.

Oh no. Deep down I know that a SUPREME meetup is never going to happen. But I'm not going to suddenly reappear after a glorious absence of several months and start talking about how dumb it is.

Just imagining the meetup and all the scenarios that go along with it seems like fun to me.

I'm up for Vegas.

My system for acquiring booze money goes as such.

Put $20 into a pennyslot machine
Consume free drinks while playing said pennyslots
Contiune until drunk
Cash out with 2-3 times as much money as you put in (this never fails... seriously)
Buy good alcohol with your winnings

Adrenochrome ? That's supposed to be some nasty shit.

Looks like Dr. H, FC, and CW are going to Vegas in March, so there's a snowball that can slowly gather some ...snow, or moss.

I haven't posted any hotel prices for Chicago because I don't have a feel for whether people want to go top hat or whether they want to "brown bag" it. I would be mostly going by the establishment propoganda, in my "scout report", as I rarely stay in hotels. There are places on the outskirts that are far less expensive but which involve commuting time.

An el train stretches out as far as O'Hare airport to the Northwest. Due to some construction in the loop, certain lines of the elevated have been recently slowed down. I'm pretty sure that the line which stretches to Midway airport ( South ) will be affected by that.

I would like to go. No question. My cash flow is such that I have to adopt a "wait and see" attitude, which is par for the course with me. Another reason I'm not more active in trying to be a whiz-bang central planner for a Chicago meet-up.

Also a good strategy for your meet-up plans.
