View Full Version : What are you all doing on new years eve?

I personally am left with two choices. Either I don't go anywhere, stay in the house with the family (probably just my mother and father), drink some wine, eat some potato chips, and watch television.

The other alternative is going out into town, all by myself, without knowing anybody, and hope to meet interesting people. I'm leaning towards doing the latter, but also incredibly fearful because... I don't even know why I'm afraid. I just feel it in my shoulders. Like something cold that is grabbing me from behind.

Neither is a very glorious prospect. In the first, I am a loser. In the second, I am as well - less so, but I go on the public record about it.

i've gone out on the town by myself before. it's no big deal, except it might be on new years because everyone goes out with their best friends. They probably wont want to deviate from their cliques very much.
I suggest going, but dress like this:

A friend invited me to a cocktail party, which I might go to. But maybe not, since I'd have to dress up. *grumble*

Yes, that will be a sure icebreaker with all the guys and girls dressed as hobbits, of which there will no doubt be plenty.

I've done the barfly thing too. The end-result was that I spent the whole evening talking to a drunk 40 year old guy. We hand-wrestled (I won), I borrowed him 10 euro (which he paid me back the next day when I returned), and we talked about... guess. His problems, indeed!

Not a very succesfull attempt. I hope I don't get stuck doing that tonight, if I go.

but do you really want to meet new people if they're not dressed as hobbits? i didn't think so.

If I ever have to meet a hobbit, he will be on my dinner plate.

Let's take advantage of this forum being small and cozy and full of intelligent people, myself possibly withstanding, to keep conversation small, cozy, and full of intelligence.

So... back on topic!

As it is now almost midnight, and I'm still sitting here, typing this, I think you can all intuit together how I'm spending my new years eve. Feeling like the least wanted person on earth, eating myself up inside, and professing that this is the very last time I sit here alone.

Next friday, I'm going out, making lots of eyecontact, and I begin the process of scoring a girlfriend. Then I keep her (or trade her up) until next new year.

I managed to avoid my wife's desire to attend a formal event by the usual INTP trait of procrastination. I dread the thought of wearing a coat and tie for 8 hours around a throng of 1000+ people.

Looks like it is Hooters and the redneck bar for New Year's Eve. Eyebyte and Attila are down for it too.

I'm staying and making sock-puppets.

I am currently drinking Sofia mini (http://www.sofiamini.com/site.php) sparkling white wine (Francis Ford Coppola's winery). It comes in a small can like Red Bull and you drink it with a straw.

Well, I got drunk, but had a lousy time. I spent the whole evening being the youngest person in the room - there was one girl there my age, aside from - yes - my very own sister, and she was the class whore of my junior school. Married with two stepchildren. It was not a success.

Still, I got drunk and had a lousy time. Better than not getting drunk and not having any time at all, I guess.

I think I'm going to try to time my bedtime so I go to sleep at exactly 11:59 for an added snub to the silly tradition.

I decided to walk over to 7-11, inadvertantly right at 12:00. A few buildings down is a tall apartment building with balconies and a lot of people were being loud out there and one of them even went "hey there's a guy down there," so I yelled back at them.

So at the 7-11, I got:

I haven't been to one since i was 10!!!

i tried to get to sleep by 11:59, but to no avail. I kept receiving text messages and phone calls. Friends are such a hassle when you're trying to be anti-social. Sadly, I didn't get to sleep until 12:30

I was home, and at midnight my child and I had pots and pans and spoons, opened the front door, and it began to pour down rain. We yelled happy new year and made noise with the pans and spoons. I opened pink champagne at 11:45 pm, (I hate the new twist type cap, it doesn't even 'pop'!). Anyway, had chicken in a biscuit crackers, champagne, cheese & apples and watched prairie home companion on PBS). Nothing too exciting. My older child drove to California with his girlfriend to visit his Dad, (made it in three & a half days, stopped in Florida, San Antonio, and Blythe, California taking highway 10). They are riding motorbikes in the Santa Cruz mountains for fun.

After driving around for a while, we finally found a place to eat that didn't have a one-hour wait. Had dinner at Pappadeaux (http://www.pappadeaux.com/) seafood restaurant and paid entirely too much for an SJ experience. Most of the people around us were in suits and gowns, getting ready for the main event ... while we wore jeans and sneakers. The food was good though.

Eyebyte and I wanted to go to Hooters after that, but we met with stiff opposition from my wife and Attila, so we compromised on the redneck bar close to our house. An already drunk Cryokinetic joined us a while later. We drank a lot and were probably the loudest people in there. My wife brought noisemakers and supplemental alcohol (which we miraculously were not caught sneaking in). Eyebyte was casually solicited by a couple for some spouse/partner swapping ... but that quickly went nowhere. Ended up being the last people out of the place at 2am. Eybyte and Attila crashed at our place.

I could have gone to the late night Bears/Packers game that was timed to end just before the New year, but I stayed home and watched the Bears get their ass kicked on TV instead. Getting into the city without a long drive on such occasions involves depending on trains not having their last run canceled, or a misunderstanding due to an old schedule, or missing the train's departure by one minute because of a hassle/being drunk etc.

Still . . .I was tempted. It was depressing knowing that I was "missing out" on extra chances to make new friends etc.

I went to a party. I don't know how many people were there, maybe 20, maybe 30. I didn't talk to most of them.

I spent most of my night near the same 3 people. We staked out the couch in the least crowded room. Our friends and the more outgoing people who were interested enough to talk would come in, sit down and have a conversation with us for a bit then go off to mingle.

Having other introverted friends to hang out at parties with is nice. We even had a laptop there connected to the wifi. We were amongst the first to "get tired" and leave. Overall, not a bad new years.

I went to a house party. I debated attending for some time as there was a big dump of snow here (35cm). So that means I had to hike to the beer store and then hike about 3 km to the party (probably wise not to drive anyways but still).

A whole whack of couples plus single ol' me. That kind of sucked. But decent people overall. Give it a 7 out of 10, plus the main streets had been plowed by 3 am so I got a ride most of the way home. Still, I'll be 50/50 if I get the same invite next year.

So you got 3 inches of snow and hiked a couple of blocks?

What?

So you got 3 inches of snow and hiked a couple of blocks?

What?Check your metric conversion tables. It was more like a foot and a half in my local hood. And note, I am not American. You can't just assume I own a 4-ton SUV. ;)

Those that did where out and about, thereby justifying their purchase for these once a year occurences. Horrifying as the notion of exercise is during the season of consumption excess, I thought the hike wouldn't do me any harm.

Did an all-nighter at a quiet party; was unbearably awkward at first but then the social lubricant of time made it all right. Did surprisingly introverted stuff ranging from discussing surface tension, to listening intently to the audio tape of a buddhist monk, to building card towers (mine had a moat).

Then in the early hours of 10 am in the new year, we took our sleep deprived, zombified, shell-of-a-person arses to the nearest McDonalds for breakfast, which wasn't even open so we had to settle for Oporto.

All in all, enjoyable time, but I didn't continue my tradition of swimming at 3 am on the 1st of every new year.

I hate fireworks, they are dull.
