1. 50 best works of art? (http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/56809)

How could they leave out the

2. Pieta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Michelangelo%27s_Pieta_5450_cropncleaned.jpg).

3. Mona Lisa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mona_Lisa.jpg)

But their list of 50 (http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/56809) is eclectic - interesting for INTPs - with links to great art sites.

I like the list. I would have included Michelangelo's David, b/c it's incredible up close.

As for the Mona Lisa, it's art that you see b/c you're supposed to see it. It's actually pretty darn disappointing, though.

I really liked the link, but don't think you can represent the whole of the visual expression of humanity in 50 selections. Although that is better than none. I would hope most people would see more than 50 works of art before they die.

Here are some of my favorite links:

I would love to see even more links. This is just a quickie offering. :)

No, it's art you see because the painting was famously stolen.

Semantics. It's art that you see because you're supposed to see it because the painting was famously stolen. And it's still disappointing.

Great list! I have seen alot of it, but wow, there is still much to see! I did discover
Jackson Pollock this summer. All my pics from NYC (http://forums.intpcentral.com/showthread.php?t=17464)are of his works in the Met. Such a great place!

I have been right next to la dame - so let me defend her - with humor and philosophy:

1.. The philosophy of Leonardo's art by Durant:

"To be absorbed in the philosophy of the art rather than in its technical accomplishment; to leave to others the lesser task of coloring the figures so drawn and placed for revealing significance; to turn in despair, after long labor of mind and body, from the imperfection with which the hand and the materials had embodied the dream; was this leonardo's character and fate, with few exceptions to the end?"

2. The humor of Einstein, beauty and relativity:

"Sit next to a beautiful girl [Mona Lisa] for an hour, it seems like a minute. Sit on a red-hot stove for a minute, it seems like an hour. That's relativity?"

3. I also like the David (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:David_von_Michelangelo.jpg) - and it must be 20 feet high, which was a suprise to me.

... and finally art is in the eye of the .... ?

yeah. best sculpture ever

If sculpture is in fact - frozen music - the pieta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Michelangelo%27s_Pieta_5450_cropncleaned.jpg) is also the best song ever?
