I'm wondering if this test might be easier for people who don't have English as their native language than it is for American English speakers. Germanic languages have words like affect/effect as well, but pronounce them with ah- and eh- respectfully, and when they don't sound the same, it's easier to keep them apart. Either that or I'm just überleet!

I object to the supposedly correct answer to number 25:

25. Speeding in your car is __________.
a. risky
b. risque
c. Either a or b
d. Neither a nor b
The correct answer is risky.
Points: a=1, b=0, c=0, d=0
Definitions:
risky - adj. accompanied by or involving risk or danger; hazardous
risque - suggestive of or bordering on indelicacy or impropriety; suggestive of sexual impropriety

Speeding in one's car could certainly be viewed as risque under the right circumstances; hence I chose "c" as my answer.

I just looked at the answer key and got every "Advanced" answer right, so I don't understand that one.

About the hanged/hung issue, it really is correct that only 'hanged' refers to the act of hanging a person by a rope. Interestingly enough, the punishment for hanging is to "be hanged until death." Just in case you don't die, of course.

I got the further/farther one wrong. Also the whoever/whomever, which I should have known better (guessed both of the above).

Risque has specifically mild sexual connotations, and is thus inappropriate to be used as a synonym for 'outrageous'.

But it sometimes marks the test wrong...

About the 'hanged', 'hung' issue, the correct word is definitely 'hanged'.

'Hung' is used as the past tense in reference to most things, but when you refer to the hanging of a person, the word is 'hanged'.

Where I live, capital punishment takes place by hanging, and I'm a law student, so I'm sure of this.

My issue (with basic grammar) is usage, not knowledge. I guess there is a short somewhere in my brain between creation of the idea and translating it into words.

I thought either hanged or hung was appropriate, so I chose "both." <_<

Ditto. And I dispute their answer sheet on the grounds that dictionaries agree with me. :p

You have an extremely good understanding of beginner, intermediate, and advanced level commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of each of these three levels' questions correct. This is an exceptional score. Remember, these are commonly confused English words, which means most people don't use them properly. You got an extremely respectable score.

You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 100% Advanced, and 100% Expert! I am posting my result merely because English is my third language.

I dispute use of the word "hung". Or maybe I just have seen too many Westerns.
"Hung" is intransitive, "hanged" is transitive. So "they hung" (= they ended up dead and swaying in the wind), but "they hanged him" (= they made him the one who ended up dead and swaying in the wind); strictly speaking, "they hung him" is meaningless.

Hey, could I have gottenmore than 100%? DAMMIT.
No. The test merely awards a point even for an incorrect answer in that question, so you could have gotten 100% in spite of flunking that one choice.

"Foul swoop" instead of "Fell swoop" is another pet peeve.
I recently saw "fail swoop". That really made me cringe. Worse, it made me think of Ptah.

I dispute the exclusion of Risky/Risque ("driving fast is...") and Naval/Navel ("... travel makes me sick"). Both words could be appropriate, but with the latter being much more exciting in each case.

Could have been 87% if not for further/farther. A silly mistake, I suppose. Another one was connected with choosing all of the above, so I was still technically correct, merely limited in my vocabulary.

Good, good. I approve of the test.
