I'm wondering if this test might be easier for people who don't have English as their native language than it is for American English speakers. Germanic languages have words like affect/effect as well, but pronounce them with ah- and eh- respectfully, and when they don't sound the same, it's easier to keep them apart. About the hanged/hung issue, it really is correct that only 'hanged' refers to the act of hanging a person by a rope. Interestingly enough, the punishment for hanging is to "be hanged until death." Just in case you don't die, of course.

I dispute use of the word "hung". Or maybe I just have seen too many Westerns.
"Hung" is intransitive, "hanged" is transitive. So "they hung" (= they ended up dead and swaying in the wind), but "they hanged him" (= they made him the one who ended up dead and swaying in the wind); strictly speaking, "they hung him" is meaningless.

No. The test merely awards a point even for an incorrect answer in that question, so you could have gotten 100% in spite of flunking that one choice.


"Foul swoop" instead of "Fell swoop" is another pet peeve.
