CorporateWhore, Dr. Haight and I will be going to Las Vegas and we are narrowing down the weekends that would be most ideal to go. Which weekend(s) would you be able to attend ?

I voted for both 16-18 and 23-25, because I could go to both, but I would much prefer 16-18.

ok seriously, when have you guys met up when i was in the same state? Once! And granted Loring Park was like 20 feet away from the building I was in, but how was I supposed to know that you were going to be there? I thought your thing was in St. Paul or something, for some reason.
I guess there might have been another time you met up when I was around, but I'm sure I had a good reason for not going then too.

I'm thinking the "Vegas Club Hotel & Casino" - cheap and seems nice enough.

I just want to make sure I'm on the same area of the strip as everyone else (or the majority). So either the Vegas, or Treasure Island

What side are people thinking of staying at?

More clarification for those that may be curious

Southside (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&f=q&q=3300+S.+Las+Vegas+Blvd%2C+las+vegas%2C+nv&btnG=Search+Maps)

Northside (http://www.google.com/maps?q=129+Fremont+St,+Las+Vegas,+NV+89101&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title)

South you have the newer hotels, the big ones. These are usually more expensive then northside but not that much more (+$50 - $100 a room difference... maybe)

North is the old strip, these are still nice hotels and they are less expensive.

From the map you should see that there are a ton of hotels in those two areas, it doesn't matter what hotels everyone stays at - I just think life would be easier (no taxi, shuttles) if people picked Northside/Southside.

Hustler, I don't know if I'm very accurate with this, I don't remember what the shuttle system was like - care to elaborate?

The Mirage has to be my all time favorite on the strip, but its not cheap. I'd stay at the Golden Nugget and taxi over to the strip, and get out near the Mirage or Caesars. Go each night from 4 pm-10pm with a few others to make it cheaper. Have the dinner buffet at the Mirage (an amazing value with the best food in town). Golden Nugget also has one of the better buffets. If you ate at those two places, you'd be very happy.

Room rates are often cheaper Sunday thru Thursday. Golden Nugget for instance is $69 on those nights. Try Golden Nuggets world famous Bread pudding, its hiding under one of those silver steam pans, just lift the lid and spoon it out. (Breakfast buffet is around $8.99).
http://www.goldennugget.com/home/reservations/index.cfm?&MonthDate=03/21/2007

The Golden Nugget is not near the strip however, its near Fremont Street experience. You have to take a taxi or bus to the strip, but the rooms are cheap, very nice, and very reasonable buffet. (Its Northside). PS: If you get 2 people to a room at the Nugget, with several rooms nearby, you can all taxi together to the strip and save a lot. Be SURE to tip the taxi driver at least $8 or they'll flip out. It costs about $30 to taxi to the strip, but if you split it with 3 people, much better.

Otherwise, if you don't mind getting on a really old bus its only $3.00 and you stop near Caesars palace. Be SURE to go to the 3D show at the bottom of Caesars, its $15 and really really fun.
http://www.harrahs.com/casinos/caesars-palace/casino-misc/hotel-overview.html

For the couples or romanticists: You might enjoy a corny gondola ride at the Venetian, $20 each, you can ask the gondola man to sing "Its Amore" or other mushy Italian song. http://www.venetian.com/

http://www.venetian.com/accommodations/pics/7.jpg

I highly recommend the O show at Bellagios. It will cost an extra $100-150, but the O show is amazing. Bring binoculars, you will never forget it. www.bellagio.com look for entertainment and O show. Tickets are $150.00. $125.00, and $99.00, but you will see poster advertisements are all over the airport, and city billboards, its that amazing. Pre-reserve with a credit card if possible.

I do NOT recommend Jubilee which is supposed to be a classic feather and topless show at Ballys. A dull broadway show that cost too much and made me fall asleep- yawn. http://www.harrahs.com/casinos/ballys-las-vegas/hotel-casino/property-home.shtml. However, Ballys does have a great seafood buffet, which might be worth trying, I went back three times for the fresh crab legs with drawn butter, ate way too many, but damn, you can't find crab that tasty anywhere.

The Mirage is fantastic, and that would be where I'd chose to stay if I had a lot of money $160-350 per night, because its on the strip, smoke free and has amazing entertainment. I was also consistently lucky there. (Jackpot!). On top of that, the buffet has the most fresh, most wonderful selection of every type of food from desert to meats to salads, and everything is amazing, all for $17or so. The buffet is the most wonderful thing on earth. http://www.mirage.com/amenities/. Otherwise, save your money, stay at Golden Nugget.

http://www.mirage.com/images/attractions/attractions_aquarium_main.jpg

http://www.mirage.com/images/attractions/attractions_volcano_main.jpg
You've got to see Caesars, and all of its shops. The Mirage, Venetian, Paris, and Bellagio are near by and also must sees. If you can walk to MGM at the end, thats also good. I tried my luck at many but the two most lucky spots for me were Golden Nugget and the Mirage consistently.

You will need a LOT of money for taxis. Figure $60 at least per day, and especially from airport to hotel. Bring a good alarm for the early departure back to airport.

Put the amount of money you are willing to lose gambling into an envelope for each day you are there. This way you will only carry with you what you don't mind losing that day. And, if you win, find an ATM and deposit it immediately so you don't lose it again!

Hustler, I don't know if I'm very accurate with this, I don't remember what the shuttle system was like - care to elaborate?

The "northside" is actually downtown Las Vegas and the "southside" is the strip. Downtown is sort of a giant ghetto. All of the hotels there are older, more run down, and full of old people who chain smoke and play nickel slots for hours and hours. The strip is way cooler, with a lot more to see and do, with far nicer hotels, but you do end up paying more for that. On the center strip, you can probably get decent rates at places like the Barbary Coast, the Imperial Palace, or Casino Royale, all of which are on the strip, but all of which are small and not that great beyond their location among the better places. Toward the south side of the strip, you can probably find favorable rates at the Tropicana, Excalibur or Hooters. Heh. The Hard Rock and Palms are both close to the strip, but just off of it. Their rates are comparable to major strip hotel rates. Same with the Rio, which is right across the street from the Palms. Next to the Rio and Palms, you also have the Gold Coast, which caters to a lot of locals as well as tourists, and probably has favorable rates. Near the Hard Rock, just east of the strip, you also have The Tuscany, which I'm told has nice rooms at a decent rate. But, as with anything, the more you're willing to pay, the better your room and location will be, and the better the amenities at your hotel will be.

I don't recommend downtown Las Vegas. It's just not that great. A better option would be to hunt for downtown prices in strip or strip-adjacent hotels. It's easily worth the extra expense.
