How many here play, how much, and how good are you?

I've never officially competed, and play sporadically, but am not bad for a complete amateur. If someone wants a friendly game we could play on Yahoo! Chess sometime.

I'd love to play! I haven't played since I was in 6th grade so I'd be extremely rusty. When I was in the 4th through beginning of the 6th, my dad and I would play almost every single night after dinner.

6th grade is...about 9 years ago for me. So I haven't played in 9 years. Basically I can remember what the pieces do and that's all.

Good, it will be a pleasing boost of confidence then :)

Dammit, I haven't been there for so long they took away my rating!

Heh I use to be really into it. I read a buncha books and would daydream about being the next bobby fischer. I'm actually serious about that.....heh heh. But I retired my chess set. I can't stand losing. Plus I'm really rusty....but I'll think on playing again.

jyakulis...We should play. I studied a slight bit two years ago, read a BF book on endgame, and studied most of the excellent work "The Amateur's Mind" before all my focus went to bicycle racing. I haven't opened it back up yet...

Yeah i'll play sometime. You know much about the sicilian defense? It was always an opening style I wanted to adopt when playing black but never fully understood all the variations. So, I usually just resort to opening with the king's pawn. What is it, a yahoo games type thing?

Chess is my obsessive hobby that I never actually engage in or do anything about. I love it. Every once in a while I'll pick up on it and play against some computer all night. I only have one book about it which I've never read, though. I probably suck pretty badly but I'm still absolutely fascinated by it.

I don't even know if reading a lot on it is what it takes. A lotta players develop their own style. But I think reading about opening styles helps a little. It is a really important part of the game. If you get knocked back on your heels early it's hard to dig yourself out of it.

I just noticed your avatar is Don Johnson...

lol, anyway the only book I have is microsoft press's chess brilliancies. When I was young I used to get out my chess board and chase down my dad or my uncle or someone I knew who could beat me, and just kept playing them. Now none of them can come close to beating me.

1. You can get very far strategically just blindly using popular openings with a little idea of their intent. It's what I do.

2. Positional strategy is the most important thing to study, and it's something that could take 100 years of playing to decipher yourself. It's effective if the tutor (book) is potent.

You're first in line, but I haven't heard anything about you being ready to play. Are you? I'm in Turtle Shell room on yahoo. Create a private table and invite me!

I'll be leaving in like 45 minutes...and I think it would take longer than that. I won't be coming back on-line until early next week. Let's do it monday or tuesday night?

I actually found a couple books on my online library. It's called questia.com. I like it a lot, it's 15 dollars a month, but it has any technical book you could possibly want. Some popular novels too, but mostly technical reading. Plus I'm usually reading 5 or 6 books all at once, so, it works out better for me than going to the library.

Oh I love chess. I'm really poor at it, and I havn't read up on it, but I enjoy it none the less.

Usually I play about 3 games a week with numerous other people. Of course, i'm usually beaten (especially by that Chinese guy who sits opposite me and laughs...).

Chess is my thing. I'm probably a bit below Fide Master strength ... but planning to take chess back up ... and believe I can get back to master strength. I haven't got an official rating (well I was 1850 or so Australian Chess Federation rating but that was a few years ago and most games were playing in my early teens ... and I never got to play many 'adult' games ... mostly my career was in junior tournaments).

I'm planning to start back up over the next couple of days and try to get back to my old strength.

I wouldn't say I know much about the Sicilian Defense, but it is my favorite Defense so far. I just like the way the game tends to unfold while using it. For white, I think the Queen's Gambit is my fav, hopefully resulting in a fast open game.

Chess is an awesome game.I do very well against the kids in my chess club(not sure if that means much). When I finally get my new computer I'll start back up although I just can't play on-line very well. If the game is right in front of me I get in the zone. On the computer I play like a novice. The game just seems so distant in 2d.

I'd love to play against you guys but I may not be very good competition. If more people were interested I think it'd be cool if we a had some sort of tourney.

I decided to try playing again so I registered for a freeweek on ICC. (chessclub.com)

This is one of my games so far.

[Event "ICC 30 15"]
[Site "Internet Chess Club"]
[Date "2004.12.31"]
[Round "-"]
[White "opponent"]
[Black "me"]
[Result "0-1"]
[ICCResult "White resigns"]
[WhiteElo "2221"]
[BlackElo "2356"]
[Opening "Robatsch (modern) defense"]
[ECO "A40"]
[NIC "KF.05"]
[Time "16:13:47"]
[TimeControl "1800+15"]

1. d4 g6 2. e4 Bg7 3. c3 c6 4. Nf3 d5 5. exd5 Qxd5 6. Nbd2 Bf5 7. Bc4 Qd7 8.
O-O a5 9. a4 Na6 10. Re1 Nc7 11. Qb3 Nd5 12. Nf1 Ngf6 13. Bg5 Be6 14. Ne3
O-O 15. Ne5 Qc7 16. Bxf6 exf6 17. Nd3 Nxe3 18. Rxe3 Bf5 19. Rae1 Bxd3 20.
Bxd3 Rad8 21. Bc4 Rd7 22. h4 f5 23. h5 Bf6 24. Rg3 Kg7 25. Qc2 Qf4 26. Ree3
Re7 27. Rxe7 Bxe7 28. Re3 Bd6 29. g3 Qg5 30. hxg6 hxg6 31. Bf1 f4 32. Rf3
fxg3 33. fxg3 Bxg3 34. Qg2 Bh4 35. Qxg5 Bxg5 36. Bg2 Re8 37. d5 cxd5 38. Rd3
Re1+ 39. Kh2 Re2 40. Rxd5 Bf4+ 41. Kh3 f5 42. Rd3 g5 {White resigns} 0-1

I used to be a member of ICC (for a few years) and my opponent is an old friend ... he's quite strong ... and as always happens against him for some reason, I was in an awkward position coming out of the opening. (Qxd5 in the opening was played with the intention of being interesting, knowing that the probably more sound cxd5 looked dull).

Anyway ... you can see what you think from that. Not me at my best, but nice stubborn defence and a pretty finish. (the time limit was 30 minutes each, plus 15 seconds added after each move)

As others have mentioned, I am able to play on Yahoo! Chess, so PM if interested.

Furthermore:

I play whenever I feel like it, no set time, obsessive moments, etc. My rating, as most, fluctuates depending on how long I am between matches. I seem to grow, and continue to improve everytime I play, however. At minimum, my rating is at least 1600.

Also, I have played in a few official tournaments in the past. However, it has been many years since the last one.

Well i usually go by the name of "Aethelfrith", but its an unregistered one so others may have it !
I have a registered one which goes by the name of "Wolffe" but i hardly ever use it, because that can affect your ratings. So i have kept it aside for really serious matches.
