View Full Version : Messy Desk Contest

31 Dec 2004, 04:37 AM
Hey everyone, the developers here at INTP Central decided to throw a little bit of a contest. This contest is very simple: who has the messiest desk. The prize (other than an ego trip?) is a 256 MB DIMM of DDR333.

The thinking: As I cleaned up my desk several days ago, it took several, I came to the conclusion my desk was messy as hell. So I had the idea that I should run a messy desk contest (bash.org inspired partially). So the instructions, requirements, and some examples are below.

Alright, basicly submit a picture of your desk and/or room with a desk in it so we can see how messy it is. Anything goes, no holds or things barred. For all I care you can have a purple dildo with lubricant on it in the corner of your room right next to your furry handcuffs.

Requirements:
1) You must have a (clearly visible) sign with your forums name and "intpcentral" on it.
2) A desk and/or computer must be in view, laptops are fine, but they better be on a desk.
3) No people in the pictures
4) No intentional dirtying of your room-the desk must be in it's natural state.
5) No digital modifications to images (other than size changes, etc)
6) Please try to keep the picture's size under 3megabytes and a medium resolution (640x480, 800x600, all those are fine) in a jpg, gif, or png format, I won't convert it for you, I want it ready for web :)

My example (large, I appologize for size) is below:

http://travis.travisbsd.org/imgstor/IMG_0494.JPG

Once you've taken this picture/scanned this picture in, send it via attachment to contest@intpcentral.com and we'll add it to our system.

You have until the end of January to submit your pictures, after this we'll close submissions and post all the pictures into a system for forum members to view and vote, ones with the most votes win.

If you need clarification, want exceptions made, etc, post here.

Good Luck :)

*Beware low bandwidth users!*

My desk is an utter mess... It's been much worse, but this is close to peak messy season... Just to give you an idea, a picture won't suffice, you need to get the full effect..

So adieu, I leave you with this...

My Domain (http://www.just-another.net/messdesk.avi)

P.S. Pardon the mess...

P.P.S. Pardon the shitty desktop too...oh, and the lotion, it's probably what you think, but I do have dry feet...

Grr... Mine was messy... then I had to pack it up and move out of my dorm. It wasn't very big, so it had, well... greater mess density or something. End of January? Argh, it'll take longer than that to get it back to full mess potential after I move back in... maybe I can catch the next contest?...

My desk is messy...yes...but the pictures suck, tried to make them better, but psp8 sucks too.

Ok, here it is, I have two pictures, but the first one should suffice:

This one (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Division56/twoMessyDesk.jpg), if number two (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/Division56/oneMessyDesk.jpg) is not allowed, then let me know and I will delete such.

Yes, those are books supporting my monitor, two chem ones, one Calc-solutions manual, don't look at me, I won't be needing those in the future...

Be proud of your mess ^_-, I am.

P.S.- This is about as bad as it gets...after this I usually clean it...:P

How many INTPs well-meaning loved ones clean up and organize their living spaces? My mom stills shows up at my house periodically and cleans the kitchen or unclutters some space into tidy little stacks.

I could win if I didn't clean my desk today and was motivated to spend all of 5 minutes taking a picture and uploading it. I'm not kidding either, I have pizza, Arizona tea cans, bowls, cups, money, headphones, books, random electronic equipment, paper, CDs, candy, etc. lying around. Unfortunately my desk is rather clean as of right now. (Cleaned it just a week ago because my boss went and told me he thought it was too messy). However, this picture was taken about 2 years ago and potrays pretty accurately just how messy my desk can become... Ignore the asshole in the chair in front of the desk...

You wanna know something even more embarrassing? I actually picked up the desk a little the day before I took the pic. There were soda cans everywhere. And I threw away a few post-its I didn't need anymore. And, since directly behind me is a wall, with a shelf that is overflowing with papers and books and junk, I couldn't get a more comprehensive view which would include two piles of CDs as big as the one next to the monitor.

Oh, God, that's one spiffy office, Birdsnest. I should take a picture of mine.

Sort of tangent but I've often wondered why people gossip. Whether boredom, or a "need to know" in order to compare yourself with others / insecurity. Maybe the latter is a bit paranoid on my part.

Just moved to a back cubby, much more peaceful than being up front. (I'd asked last summer and fall, and finally, they hired someone else that can babysit the front office). Now I can be my introverted self and lavish in it. Not too messy though, because I have to be able to look at ONE thing at a time and focus completely on it. If there is too much clutter it distracts me. I have to be more J in my job than I am at home. I enjoy having that Melitta pot that was from Target for 19.99, because it boils water for hot apple cider tea, coffee and cocoa or instant soup. There is a papier mache red lady bug on my monitor. I have a mirror up so I can see who walks by behind me. The copy room is close by, and so far, the main issue I have is the loud Southern accented voice of a gossipy extroverted guy nearby that talks too loud, and literally gossips with everyone all over the center. He knows all the gossip first, and, boy if you are not from the South, you would be surprised what they know about people because there is little else to do, gossip is a major way of life for most of these ESFJ's. I definitely do NOT gossip, and really find I dislike that quality in people. Grow up people. Get a Life. Gossip is for people that have nothing better to do. (Hey, I need to put something in my office that says that!). http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/Shellsphotos/IMG_9518.jpg

I love the contrast between the new computers, sleek lines of the desk and the old school heritage phone.

In other words, I give you a hearty FUCK YOU UP THE ASS my friend, and hope that your days shall be painful and terrible (not really, but hey :) ). The ram is on it's way your way :).

I gotta get a digital camera here at work. I spent 5 hours today cleaning my bosses desk, and I finally found about a foot square of the actual desk. There isn't a surface (other than the small section of the desk i cleaned today) which has piles less than 2 feet deep. In the course of the cleaning today I found papers from 2002. (And lets not get into what is under the desk).

haha i wish i had a camera. probably would've won the contest. just cleaned my apartment yesterday, but before that.. as a matter of fact, it's still extremely messy now, just instead of the pile of stuff being a foot high, it's only half a foot.. with an empty spot for where my arms rest and for my mouse to be able to function effectively. thank goodness i'm not the only one. ;)

my record was removing 9 empty Mt Franklin (mineral water) bottles from my table one time. plus, two empty tissue boxes, stacks of paper.. 1 empty bottle of moisturiser.. a pizza box.. an empty box of panadol.. 5 cups. that was just yesterday. thank goodness i have a laptop. it takes up less space than a desktop, and i can remove it when there's no space on my desk. (and you wondered why people can't believe i'm a girl)

My boss would win, hands down. His office is a complete wreck. He's got a huge desk with another table on the side and the entire surface is covered in stacks of paper at least a foot high. His keyboard even has crap on top of it. His inbox is overflowing two and a half feet high. And he's to the point where he moves piles to the floor in order to make room for new piles on his desk, so now he has pretty much boxed himself in to the point of having to step over a pile to get to his chair. The piles on his floor are at least three feet high and he's got them everywhere, even in the leg space under the desk and the floor in front of the desk. He also has another table behind him that's covered in stacks of paper and files. His boss pesters him all the time to clean it up, and it's gotten a little better, but still...it's a sight to behold. If only I could get a picture.

I've had desks in the past that would put all of those to shame...

unfortunately, I don't program much anymore (lots of scrap paper), and I pretty much stopped drinking soda.

You should've seen my desk in elementary school. One time my friends were bugging me about how full of crap my desk was, and we tried tipping it on its side. It was so jam-packed that nothing would fall out. And my backpack - you don't want to go there.

I lose.

After many years of being frustrated at the fact that it was a complete mess, and at all the time wasted digging through the rubble searching for something, only to come up empty... I've started to obsessively throw anyway everything that isn't of immediate use. I try to do this immediately before I sit down to do something, so that nothing irrelevant to my immediate task is on the desk.

Not only does it save looking for it later, but I rarely have crap on my desk distract me now.

That said.. When I intent to do something with an item later.. I put it on this extra chair in my room. Keeping it confined to a chair prevents it from spilling out anywhere else. And since I'm never actually going to get to any of it, every now and then I clear out anything older than a month.

It works great. Since I have no reminders of what I forgot to do nagging at me, it's been a wonderful confidence builder! :p
