basically, in England there is a programme called Celebrity Big Brother, which many people look down on but is basically a great thing to watch if you are interested in psychology. One of the contestants is an Indian actress called Shilpa Shetty, who is quite beautiful, glamorous, apparently talented etc. She is being constantly bullied by three white contestants - Jade Goody (a fat, ugly, extremely ignorant and stupid "chav" who is a celebrity because she was a contestant in a Big Brother not for celebrities), Daniielle Lloyd, a former Miss England who was disqualified for having slept with one of the judges, and Jo something, a washed up pop star. The abuse has included Shilpa being told to "fuck off home", and claims that Indians all "eat with their hands", while shilpa's culinary skills have been used as an example of why "they" are all "skinny" and "ill all the time". The show has recieved over 15 000 complaints, death threats sent to Channel 4, prompted a statement from the Indian government expressing its opposition to racism, as well as question in Parliament to Tony Blair which prompted him to do the same. Furthermore, Prime Minister elect Gordon Brown has condemned the actions of the housemates

In one outburst, Lloyd asked Shetty: ?Do you get stubble?? In another, Budden, who constantly called her ?the Indian?, asked: ?Do you live in a house or a shack??
The actress was even called a ?dog? and contestants have complained about her touching their food. Ms O?Meara declared that Indians were thin because they were always ill as a result of undercooking food. Shetty?s accent was also mocked.
To add to this was the Times of India alleging that Jack had called Shilpa a "fucking Paki". Channel 4 later insisted he had actually called her a "cunt" ...
EDIT - Big Brothers the one where they all live in a house cut off from the world. the racists don't know everyone hates them, so it will be a shock when they come out.

that's so terrible on so many levels. Living in america, i've never been subject to racism (I HAVE been subject to racial stereotyping, in that everybody immediately infers that i'm a math/science whiz on my way to med school).
Its worse for the indians in england, maybe b/c there are just so many of them there. Some of them are bound to be more "urban" (see ali g, though he's not portraying an indian per se),. and thus give other indians a bad rap. This kind of happens in large cities in the us and canada... i have a cousin who's dad is a dentist in chigago, who "thinks he's black" (yikes!)

It's nothing to do with being urban - you can't get much more urban than the people doing the bullying, eg Jade Goody's mother, who wa in the show, is a one armed Lesbian motorbike freak. And shilpa, well, she is very wealthy and glamorous. It's more to do with simple ignorance about the "third World".
Also, Indians in the UK are actually on average wealthier than whites. so jealousy comes into play, especially for working class whites.

I think the main problem in the UK is that some people never leave the country where it belongs when they come to live in the city.

OK, maybe I'm just being stupid, but why is being "misogynist and abusive" somehow better then being racist? I don't get it.

Answer:
Doctor.

it's been blown out of proportion imo, governments involved?! wtf
Yeah there has been bullying, xenophobia etc and maybe comments that could be seen as racist.
Shilpa has also said comments that could be seen in the same light.
It's a garbage show that's reached a new low.

They build an off-licence whenever they get a corner kick. har har har!

The craze for "reality" programs seems not to be dying - it's going to outlive the sitcom if this keeps up. Eventually, it will die; I mean, tv's earliest staples, the western and the variety show, died, when once it had seemed that there would always be westerns and variety shows.
Why people enjoy these programs, I don't know. I myself enjoy some of them - I do sit here and watch a bunch of cooks competing to win the right to be called "chef" and get a state-of-the-art Kenmore kitchen w/all the trimmings. Which other ones have I watched? Oh, the other cooking one w/Chef Ramsey, "Hell's Kitchen" - that was fun! I found myself wishing that Chef Ramsey had been a Cockney; then the insults would have been really brutal and that much funnier. [In my experience, it's a toss-up between the Cockneys and the Irish for who can be funniest and who can insult somebody so fast, so mean, and so thoroughly that he just stands there, mouth open, wanting to cry.]
I know that the shows are bullshit. Most of what goes on is staged, that most of the footage winds up on the cutting room floor. The sited show's producers chose to show whatever crap got on tv. They knew that it would generate a firestorm - and from what the OP said, they were not disappointed. When somebody is playing that game, I sit back and laugh at the cracks. Maybe I'm a racist. I can laugh until the tears run when people are tearing into each other w/slurs - don't care if it's white/black, black/white, white/hispanics, hispanics/white, goys/Jews, Jews/goys - I mean, some of the funniest shit comes out of people when they are not trying to be funny. :theclap: I guess I'm sort of like Howard Stern's sidekick, Robin Quivers. A black lady, she sits and laughs when KKK Grand Wizard Daniel Carver is on and proves that it is possible to get 500 racial slurs out on one breath. "Wake up, white people!" =))

I love these shows. it's people watching, and it's pretty educational to see the sort of people who exist in our society. I think it should be compulsory viewing, in fact, because the likes of Jade Goody and Danielle Lloyd represent a large chunk of the british public. :(

you should watch a british comedian called Al Murray. His act is a London pub owner, who represent the working class, unionist, royalist, patriotic Brit that I know you are interested in (I recall something you said ages ago). He also rips apart his audience with insults.

yeah, there are many variations. In Britain it was called Wife Swap, and they always sent a poor, uneducated, fat, ugly, alcoholic slob with 10 unwashed, flea-ridden kids, to live with a succesful, ambitious, privately educated working parent employed in banking or marketing. Much comedy invariably ensued.

Interested in? Well, I suppose - that does describe about 1/2 my family ... You forgot extremely xenophobic. "You know what they're like, can't trust em alone in the parlour while you go out to get the kettle off the fire - they'll have something of yours in their pockets before you get back w/the tea and biscuits" - my Aunt Meta about her Cornish inlaws. Me: "Why did you marry Ed, then?" "He was handsome, wasn't he? Besides, I didn't have nothing worth stealing back then. He took the one thing that I did have worth taking, didn't he? - pointing at my cousin - and there's the result, looks just like him - and you've got to watch her around your handbag and all!"

that sounds like a Simpsons parody of a sitcom based on marriages which lead to cultural mis-matches.

Maybe, I don't know. I do know that my family are English "white trash" - I could swear that Onslow was based on my mother's elder brother - just on looks alone, never mind the rest of it, which was, as my mother would have said, "spot on" ... Well, Alfred did go to work. He was a lorry driver. Then, when he retired, he got his dream job - 4 nights per week at a plant where he was allowed to sleep on a cot between checking in deliveries. "I got to sleep straight through last night" would be his cheery morning greeting when he got home to his wife.

Or, it could just be b/c she's a huge celebrity in india. They worship their celebrities more there, than they do in America.

It's population density, and expect it to continue. Groups are threatened when other groups move in and start encroaching on them. You actually want a country that is mostly one race and has a contiguous culture, otherwise violence becomes more common. It's not PC to mention it, but this is just how people work, so since you're well assimilated and I would assume you don't live in a large/dense pocket of Indians, you don't have to fear the downside - people will just accept you.
This is why there's all the noise about illegal immigration from Mexico - they are becoming too large a portion of our population and it's starting to bother the majority. It could easily result in a civil war at some point and will definitely result in an increase in violence. Think Paris.

I love Onslow! Onslow and his wife are Alfred and Shirley minus jobs. And there is a cousin, not a sister, but a cousin, named Ruby, who did "marry upmarket" - and she does sort of remind you of Hyacinth, only she's not nearly as embarrassed by her relatives. When writers create these characters, they do start w/real people as their models. Then they blow things up, distort them for laughs - but the kernel of truth and reality is there, which is why we laugh at them ... Actually, quite a few of my uncle's fellow English truck drivers would remind you a bit of Onslow - big, somewhat overweight, not too well dressed, cheery, beer-drinking sorts who are not as stupid or as uneducated as their occupation would lead snobs to believe. One of them, Terry, has the largest collection of wartime memorabilia that I've ever seen outside of a museum. Once he trusts you, he'll show you the German stuff he's collected, including a giant Swastika flag, and several authentic arm bands. He's got 2 helmets and a lugar and a baton that an SS officer once held. "This stuff is all hard to get, you know. A lot of nutters what is really into the NAZI ideology collect these here things. Them what didn't see their uncles come home minus a leg or blinded and the like. There's a place, a book store, I could show you where, if the man trusts you, you can go in the back room. That was where I got most of this lot over the years. That there flag come off a coffin. The soldier what took it sold it to me. I was there just when he come in to sell it. He had a picture of hisself, lifting it off the casket." "Are you sure it's real?" "I'm pretty sure. It's made of wool, dyed w/whatever they had left in 1945. See, it's crude like, not like them what you see in pictures from the late 30's when there were was no shortages."

yes they do this, however, on this occassion they actually stepped in to advise certain reviled contestants to change their actions, and briefed them on apologies they should make (in one case before leaving the house), simply because they were scared that if it got too out of hand they would lose more sponsors and have to cancel the show.
