The Home Office could be split into two departments under recommendations put forward by Home Secretary John Reid.

This should have been done a long time ago, the Home Office has become a joke.
It has no idea where records are, no idea how many prisoners have escaped from open prisons, no idea how many illegal immigrants are here, it did not have any idea they were employing illegal immigrants (It's where Stoned_Rider should be looking to get a job. ), they don't know how to run a justice system, they don't know how to run an effective police service. Just what do they know how to do?
"The Home Office works to build a safe, just and tolerant society, by putting protection of the public at the heart of everything it does."
I'd say we need protection from the Home Office, given the nature of the police state that recent Home Secretaries have tried to impose on us. Perhaps if they spent less time on "white elephants" such as ID cards and concentrated on making sure the Home Office did its job properly, we'd be much better off.

*Lame American Alert*
From the thread title, I imagined Mancroft speculating as whether or not an in-home office should be divided by remodeling it and putting in a new wall or setting up one of those temporary accordion-style walls.
I was so wrong.

Logically the Home Office should have been split into a Ministry for the Interior and and Ministry of Justice back in the nineteenth century, at the same time as Robert Peel's reform of policing.
I think the only reason this still hasn't happened is tradition. The position of Home Secretary is seen as one of the four 'big' jobs in government, and anyone moving to abolish it would have had the conservatives (with a small 'c') howling. I suppose all the cock-ups have at least given Reid the mandate to do the unthinkable.
Of course this means Blair will have to find another 'A'-grade minister, and as he has sacked/sent to Brussels most of Labour's talent that might be difficult.
