I didn't realize the test was timed, so around questions #36 or so, I got bored, went to use the bathroom, made coffee, and came back to finish.
I did make a few guesses (five altogether?) -- I simply couldn't find a reasonable pattern -- but apparently I made good guesses. It could have easily gone the other way, I suppose.

Yeah, I'm not sure of the number, but I think one of those was a doozy...
More annoying is where there were two patterns evident, and I simply had to choose the one I "thought" they were looking for.

Generally speaking, I think with these they use what look like multiple patterns to try to trick you. All but one of the patterns are going to be logically inconsistent in some form if it's a decent test. Which I thought was the case in this test. But then again, I got two wrong that I thought I got right, so I'm full of crap!
39 just baffled me though. It was the one with the pink, black, or white circles on the ring.

the thing with this test is, if you are smart and well educated, you can get the answers, and it isn't much use at testing Ne as a dominant or auxiliary function, because there is no time limit. A smart SJ with Ne as a tertiary or even inferior function could do well on this, because the time available lets one use functions which do not come instinctively.

Oh, yes. That one was a "wild stab in the dark." I had no clue.
I've taken harder tests that I felt more were indicative of ability than this one. The patterns here seemed to be pretty basic, for the most part.

Yes, as long as you can recognize the alphabet and do a simple number substitution in your head, you would have gotten all of those correct. (and so on.)
And the time limit would make a difference in terms of N/S, sure. Was that what it was testing for, in terms of abstract ability, though? it was merely testing to see if you had developed abstraction ability, not whether you were truly N or S, right?

oh yeah I know the test wasn't actually testing for that. I'm just saying some people will read it that way, so it should be pointed out.

Anyways, the secret with 39 is that you have to look at each circle/space separately, you can't look at them all together. Each one has a reasonable progression from one to the next. Some of them have two of one color, and then two of another color then they would go back to the first, some of them switched colors each time, etc. You are screwed if you try to look at each group as a whole.

I tried a number of patterns (holistic and individual) and just couldn't find it. Especially because the number of balls changed seemingly indiscriminately from ring to ring... so what matched up?
Do you remember the pattern/answer?
Xenophon
31 Jan 2007, 03:12 PM
The answer was the third one.
The number changing on each doesn't matter because the sequence was different for each one. Basically there were 4 options for each slot (white, black, pink, and nothing). I don't remember the exact patterns, I think that the top-left was pink-black-pink-black.....pink, left side was black-pink-white-black...pink, top-right was all spaces. I think there was a white-white-nothing-nothing... white, and a nothing-white-nothing-white... nothing.

Ok, I just burned through the test to get to question 39
going clockwise from the top:

space-space-space-space... space
white-white-space-space... white
black-white-white-black... white
space-white-space-white... space
white-white-white-white... white
black-pink-white-black... pink
pink-white-pink-white... pink
Those all make sense to me.

blank-blank-blank-blank, white-white-white-white & pink-white-pink-white were crucial for solving the puzzle. I stopped checking the others since I assumed they were noise, but I guess they have patterns too.

I picked the crescent as the odd one out, because it was the only shape that wasn't made up of just straight lines. There were a couple of other questions like that where I could see a reason that one choice could be the odd one, but also a reason for another one being the odd one out as well.

I took so long because it took me a while to figure out the pattern (roughly) for 39. I wish I knew which ones I got wrong.
36 first go thru (2 nights ago).
****** SPOILER QUESTIONS FOLLOW ********
Q36. Why C ? ('flags' on different sides is more odd than having a diffferent number of flags?)
Q40. Why the star ?
I guess I got those wrong (guessed the one with 3 flags for both the different number of flags and the angle of inclination, and guessed the crescent because it was the only one with curved lines)
I don't like the ones where it's logical to have multiple ones that are "odd" but you don't get any points unless you choose the one they happened to see.
EDIT: If I got only 3 questions wrong, 2 of them being graphical ones, how did I get non-100% values for 4 categories? With decimal precision even? I guess there is some random overlap.

Q40. Why the star ?
I picked the star because it was the only figure that wasn't facing in a certain direction, i.e. the crescent opens left, the other two open right, while the star isn't in a shape conducive to facing either left or right.

Facinating. I found this test difficult becasue of my dyslexia, I still have to slowly and laboriously sing the alphabet song in my heaad to remember the order that letters come in.
ironically, looking at my score, it was on the OTHER questions, where I was an arrogant burk, and presumed that I knew the answer straight away that I actually made mistakes.

The star was the only one that was not simetrical on the horizontal axis, as I recall, if I'm still visualising the question right. It was something to do with symitry on different axis, though

I got around 32 questions right. What I didn't like about the test was that there were so many ways to decide the answer with the "odd one out" questions. For example on the last one, you could have approached it with symmetry, the directions they're facing, or many other ways. I picked the crescent because it was the only one without an "edge" and was almost certain that was correct. But it wasn't.

I agree. I still don't know which ones of those I got wrong, as I had strong arguments why I picked the ones I did and allmost allways a good alternative which also seemed like the odd one out by focusing on different attributes.

I wish I took more time on some of these. I always feel like I need to throw down some kind of an answer if it doesn't come to me fairly quickly....even when there is no timer! Cool test though.
