I don't know about most of you guys, but I love foreign music. Especially foreign rock.

It would be great if a few of you (ahem, Vaga and Six, this definitly means you) could post the names of good bands in your countries. that way we could use P2P to download it.

Canada- Boards of Canada, of Montreal, Broken Social Scene (Godspeed You! Black Emperor and A Silver Mountain Zion are kind of grouped with Broken Social Scene, same people, different type of music though)

Scandanavian- Bjork, Sigur Ros

France- Yann Tierson

UK- Mogwai, John Digweed, Lamb, and I think Portishead, both Radiohead and Coldplay even though they're known pretty well in the States

Dave Matthews is from South Africa if that counts

Australia- Spoon

I know more, but that's all I can think of at the moment. For the most part I avoid American music, it tends to suck

Canada - Crash Test Dummies
France - Deep Forest
Norway - Amethystium, Secret Garden
England/US - Gaelic Storm
Japan - Kitaro

Only the Crash Test Dummies are a band per se, but I like all of those artists.

From Finland:
Nightwish (kind of heavymetal with a female vocalist who sings "operastyle", a bit like Evanescense, but much more original & personal)
HIM ("Lovemetal")
The Rasmus

These are the ones that I like to listen and that are currently somewhat popular also outside Finland (mainly in Europe). If someone is interested, I could give some names of those that are not so known outside Finland (and older bands as well). Would it make a difference if the lyrics were in Finnish instead of English?

Gosh, I screwed up. I initially thought it said favorite bands not foreign bands.

Has anyone one heard of Serralde? From Mexico. He actually had a cut on the Crazy/Beautiful soundtrack but my favorite track by him is Encadenado A Ti on his album No Hay Na' Mejor.

Maná, Jaguares, Ricardo Arjona, Silvio Rodriguez, Armando Manzanero.

Mexican, Mexican, Guatemalan, Cuban, Mexican.

that reminds me, I was listening to NPR and they were talking about Greek music and an instrument that was forbidden by whoever was ruling Greece at the time... and.. yeah.. I think it was Greek folk music with a twist.

Vagabond

I don't know about forbidden instruments  Chances are, they weren't talking about rock music anyway ;)

OK, it took me ages... I don't know where rock stops and other genres begin. You could check Trypes, Paulos Sidiropoulos, Vasilis Papakonstantinou, Katsimixa, Portokaloglou, Ksilina Spathia, Ypogeia Reumata, Diafana Krina (boy, greeklish looks weird) [blah blah... etc...]

If you can bear to listen to the weird kind of greek music I listen to mostly and that is not rock, check Thanasis Papakonstantinou, Melina Kana, Socratis (or Sokratis) Malamas, Thivaios, Nikos Papazoglou, bleh... now I can't find the fullstop and shut up :D

Oh, keep in mind it will all sound greek to you.

lol

Has anyone played Xenogears? From my time in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, I learned the Greek word 'xeno.' I have not played Xenogears. I understand where they got 'gears,' but why is 'xeno' in there?

An instrument spoken a lot about in Plato's dialogues is the lyre. Gonna see if I can find some music of that. Its name sounds like it is a violin-like harpsichord.

I doubt you will find the kind of lyre you read about in Plato's dialogues nowadays... you might find few other kinds though.

Xeno is a root meaning "foreign" or "alien" i believe

Melody
18 Aug 2004, 12:13 AM
I know that. =p Yep yep. I just haven't played Xenogears so I was curious why it was part of the name. My best guess is the robots in the game are from a "higher" source. Maybe heaven or some extraterrestrials. yeah, anyway

No strikethrough tag? d'oh

I guess. It's the whole Toronto music scene, there are an unusually high number of very talented people up there who all know each other. Godspeed You! Black Emporer is a group of 15 or 20 musicians (I think) who got together to make a few art house records. Pretty good stuff. A few of them (maybe 4?) broke off to record a few more art house records as A Silver Mt. Zion, and I'm pretty sure there were a few other groups that formed as well, although I'm not positive. Eventually a few of them decided to make a pop album and thus Broken Social Scene was born. Everyone wanted to be a part of it and so there are between 10 and 15 regulars on You Forgot It In People, not including the 2 or 3 "guest performers." You Forgot It In People is a really damn good album, everyone should go listen to it. If you don't like it listen to it a few more times and it'll probably grow on you.

Me too. I would have deleted that [ignore] part, but then whoever saw it at first and noticed I deleted it later would question whether the portrait I write of myself is realistic or significantly molded by how I desire to present myself.

I'll throw in another vote for Sigur Ros, they make some jaw-droppingly gorgeous music.

Hn...I never saw this...sorry, I'm kinda slow with replies.

I am not really into metal, but if you liked them you might like "Maldita Vecindad" I like some of their songs.

I am willing to send some other music too if you are interested, I mainly listen to rock/pop, hey, this is a cool idea, I wonder if we can make a thread like that?
Trading music? Is that allowed? ^__^

I am curious. How is "lyre" pronounced in Greek? Is it like "liar" or like "lee reh?" Following the pronounciation of "Pythagoras," I am guessing it is "lee reh."

The coolest aspect of my Spanish-speaking ability is that I can pronounce Greek. I think? The sounds are similar.

Lyre as in the australian Lyre bird is pronounced "liar", actually, closer to "lie-er" (err instead of a sound)
