I just think "moved in you" is such a powerful euphemism for sex. I mean, to say "I moved in you" seems to be transcendent of physical pleasure, and to mean a lot more than to say, "I had sex with you."

The cohen version is rather devoid of emotion to be honest. The Rufus Wainwright and Jeff Buckley versions are more emotionally powerful.
I'm not sure if those lines were written by Cohen or not, but they don't appear in the original version of the song that I heard... I rather like the lines of the song that got cut out of the versions by Buckley, or Wainright, or whoever,

I disagree. There's a quiet and repressed intensity in parts, and restrained playfulness in other parts.

This reminds me - the last time I had a chill run down my spine was this fantastic space sequence showing the sun emerging from around the earth's horizon, from, of all movies, Happy Feet. :blush:

These lyrics are spot on. I can relate to the being young bit, and at the same time, it makes me feel older than my years. Its like i am 50 and can feel sorrow for all the wasted time in my youth. Specially the highlighted part, absolutely love it!

Pink Floyd's "Time" is great. We had an assignment in high school to find a popular song that could pass for poetry. I brought in Time... Teacher gave me an A+ and said it was an excellent choice. Later that week 3 kids in my class came up and told me that they went out and bought "Darkside Of The Moon" after hearing that.

Bah. I think that the Rufus Wainwright version is pretty devoid of emotion. Admittedly, I think Jeff Buckley's version is more powerful than the original, but that's good too.
I'm not sure if those lines were written by Cohen or not, but they don't appear in the original version of the song that I heard...
They weren't in his original version of the song. But if I'm not mistaken, Cohen later revamped the song on a live album, and inserted the lyrics in the OP.

I agree with this song. The lyrics are more than a bit emo, but they way they are sung is great.

I went through a little phase a while back, and realized I only liked it because that's when I laid off the herb completely. The more thought I put into their songs, the more I realize they just string shit together for the sake of sounding weird. Like they grab their answers from a PSAT study book or crossword puzzle answers. This applies to them instrumentally also. But hey, to each his own. I prefer a little more emotion when it comes to music.

Aww man, you took mine. That's exactly the line that came to me when I saw the title of this thread. It's fucking incredible. The words, the drums, harmonica...it all comes together for a magical kind of synergy here. It's one of those songs I wish I could hear for the first time again.
I love the whole song but the first two verses especially are out of this world:

Hmm. That reminds me vaguely of the lines

This scared me because it made me run through the list of people I know and realize that I don't know anyone who knows me that well. I don't think my friends and family collectively could do it. Then again, I'm not sure I could do it for anyone else. One friend comes closer by far than anyone, and I only met her a year ago. It's strange to think about how that works. I love the metaphor though.

Food for thought:
Jonathan Cott makes some incomprehensible comments about the album's treatment of time: "When we feel removed from the present, we can either remember and recollect the spaces of memory." He sees "Tangled Up in Blue" as Dylan's comment on the lost spirit of the 1960's and his own musical failures in its wake. He labels "Tangled" "a song of longing for the vanishing beloved, as well as for the lost spirit of the Sixties." The narrator sings of his period living on Montague Street, "There was music in the cafes at night/And revolution in the air." These lines seem to allude to the musical and social upheaval that occurred in the previous decade. The reference to "dealing with slaves" could be Dylan's indictment of his fellow musicians' "selling out" to the excess and drugs of the "Me Decade." The narrator's response to the collapse of the Montague Street idyll also sounds suspiciously like Dylan's own retreat into domesticity after his near-fatal motorcycle crash in 1966: "And when finally the bottom fell out/I became withdrawn,/The only thing I knew how to do/Was to keep in keepin' on like a bird that flew."

My god, there were some really good choices on these last 10 or so posts. I'm getting all crumbly just reliving them all in my head. But, yeah, "Hurricane", Bob Dylan slays me even more today than when I was say 13 or 17 or whotever I was. Anything Dylan always did. Man is simply genius. If I just knew where 'the' poster is. I think I kept it at least I know I did have it folded , sacredly, and stowed away somewhere.

Many excerpts from previously posted Tool, A Perfect Circle and Radiohead lyrics have qualified for me. Music and film have more emotional stock than most of my relationships (a bit defensive perhaps). The string instruments do it for me, especially if the artist normally doesn't use it (acoustic guitar, cello, piano).
But since this is about lyrics, I'll share some Sunny Day Real Estate. The singer could make jargon sound beautiful.

I'd have to listen to it again, it just doesn't grab me, I don't like the title either. I find Eddie Vedder will sometimes nail what they do best... NF insight is a short hand way of expressing it. Other times I think he misses his mark and borders on blaise, forgettable even like any other band of the hour, and if it wasn't for their other songs they wouldn't get noticed. Pearl Jam are lifted into the greats, they make music, that is art, honest, graceful and beautiful, but only when they are at their best.

Pink Floyd's "Time" is great. We had an assignment in high school to find a popular song that could pass for poetry. I brought in Time... Teacher gave me an A+ and said it was an excellent choice. Later that week 3 kids in my class came up and told me that they went out and bought "Darkside Of The Moon" after hearing that.
"Time" is definatly one of my favorites too, but it's amazing how the one song made 3 kids buy the album! Serious talent there. :headphone:

Not sure about a particular line but Coolio's Dangerous Minds sends chills down my spine. Some emotions associated with that song for me. Was in Kingston, Jamaica when the film first came out and I remember watching it with my cousin and her friends. One of the girls started crying during the film. When we asked her why, it was because her own cousin was killed through gang violence. Made the film seem more real for me. Even now when I hear the soundtrack it still has the same effect on me.
