View Full Version : What's the point of doing anything (in life)?

Lately I've been wondering just "What's the point of doing anything (in life)?", I just don't see a purpose in it right now...no matter what you do, it'll end the same way...
I've gone through this question countless times ever since I was little, but lately it's come up every month or two, I always somehow gave myself a temporary answer, but I only stay satisfied with that for so long before I end up back where I started...
From what I know of what an INTP "is", I know this kind of questioning is to be expected, so maybe someone else here can help me out and maybe give me some kind of answers?
Thanks...

You sound depressed. Perhaps you should seek counseling, and don't let them push the drugs on you unless you think there's no other option.

umm...I've always been at least somewhat like this, I think I'm just over analyzing it all...I'm also a teenager still if that has anything to do with it (maybe it's just a "phase"?)
I'm not going to do anything ...irrational...just want to see a reason to be productive in life...

That's it.

You might need to ask yourself; what's the point of not doing anything in your life?
And yes, life always end the same way - we're all going to die one day. Until then, however, you do have an input on choosing possible future scenarios.

i had the same question. yeah, we all ask the meaning of life one point or another...here's my idea.
the meaning of life isn't the destination, its the ride. like a roller coaster.
people think that all this would eventually get us somewhere. but the point of getting somewhere is to experience whatever's there. like you drive to the ocean to experience swimming in it or whatever.
but in life, there are many experiences already, so the ride is meaningful. it's like the roller coaster. the ride itself is the meaningful experience intended. i dont know if there is a destination to life...what, ive never died before:D. but ride itself is meaningful anyway because there's the experience. temporary or eternal, the experience is the same.
"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans" - John Lennon
The cool thing is you have the choice to decide what you want the meaning of life to be, for you. Maybe amassing wealth, hoping you can take it with you (or at least one-upping your neighbor). Or helping people in need, or teaching, or raising children, etc.
Rather than seeking a purpose, make a purpose - something that you're passionate about. If you're not passionate about anything worthy, then go out & try new things, new experiences outside your realm of familiarity. It'll come to you.

Well, you've all given me something to think about. :)
I guess having someone else give you their reasons helps. Thanks for all your help! (I feel better now.)

QrioCT and Dman pretty much said what I wanted to say. But this is how I like to put it:
Alright first you can take a look at the universe. I'm sure most INTPs ponder this stuff a lot, so just remember how small you are compared to everything else. I mean, mankind isn't even a noticeable "force" in the universe -- and you're just one-six-billionth of that.
And then, assuming you're a non-believer like myself, you have to look at the fact that it's very likely that when you die, it's lights out completely. No afterlife, no consciousness of any kind with which to reflect upon your life, nothing. You're just gone.
So based on these it's easy to just think hey, I really don't matter at all -- and in a sense you're totally right. But on the other hand, you DO have your own consciousness, this odd unexplainable thing inside you that lets you "be alive" as opposed to being a robot or something. And with that you're able to experience some awesome stuff. You're going to die someday and as far as I/you/whoever knows, this is the only chance you get to do anything, ever. So why not take advantage of the opportunity? Yeah, you'll die eventually, but who cares? Dwelling on that accomplishes (nearly) nothing and sours the limited time you have to be alive. Like the others said -- it's the journey, not the destination, that makes life cool.
Or something like that. Somebody hose me down!

Exactly!
What we all do in life is basically for a desire to reach a set of nervous sensations. All of life's struggle, hard work, determination, everything is just to achieve nothing but some impulses by our nerves and brain.
1. If you want that set of nervous sensations, whether it be mental pleasure, physical pleasure, or whatever, then go for it.
2. If you think the set of nervous sensations is worthless because that nothing but some electric current flowing through you body and give you some sensations, GO KILL YOURSELF ! :D
Basically i follow the second point, so i think I think there's no point of doing anything in life. But instead of apparent negativity, it has given me strength, because even if i achieve anything or dont, it doesnt really matter at all and that removes fears from my mind.

Yeah, criminal vandalism is fun when you're a punk ass kid trying to show off, 'cause your little mind is to inadequate to come up with anything better, but someday when you wake up and have stuff of your own, that you actually worked for, that gets defiled or vandalized by some little beyotch, it's even more fun to take a baseball bat to the little bastard!
