What's everyone's favorite band/artist?

Mine's Tool. I love their lyrics and message. I relate to them perfectly. Also, they're pretty damn rocking.

I truly adore a great many very different musicians, but Neil Young has made a large amount of great music in varied styles, and never lost his talent. He's my pick.

Karsh Kale. He's an Indian (as in the country) musician who fuses Eastern music with electronica. I highly doubt anyone here's heard of him but here's some info. (http://www.karshkale.com/bio.php)

This seems to change frequently, because I get bored with bands quickly.

At the moment I think Apocalyptica qualifies as my favourite band, because they play music I really enjoy AND they play my favourite instrument, which is an unusual combination.

Bloodhound Gang. Talented and extremely creative, musically. I disapprove of their stage and offstage antics though. Nihilist art sells I guess. Their new album is pushed back to May and will include a song made entirely of Ralph Wiggum lines. I have a preview clip if anyone is interested.

It's interesting that the bands I find listed here happen to mirror my taste in music. I've met some people in the past who referred to electronica as "the genre for intelligent people". Not that other personality types aren't as intelligent *ahem*. I've also found that metal is an acquired taste, especially the better metal, in my opinion, which includes Meshuggah, some numetal but only the earlier Linkin Park, the newer blackmetal, and older bands such as Pantera, Megadeth, W.A.S.P., and Twisted Sister.

The similarities between these two large genres are quite stunning as well. Though it may not sound like it if you're not familiar with both genres, they both incorporate new beats, lots of mixing and experimentation and lots of layering of different sounds. I'm attracted to metal, blackmetal especially, because of the many layers in the music. That, and I can bounce and headbang to both hehe.

Right now, my favourite band is Children Of Bodom (their older stuff)... or is it Autechre?

Sorry about the random ramblings and poor adherence to grammar, I have something to think about now. Thank you for starting this thread.

Well, I am neither a dude, not attacking your taste, I am making it well known that Morrissey is my least favourite singer/artist/ex-band member. And that he doesn't really have an accent (that I've heard) when he sings.

It will change often. Yeah, it is. That very fact has crossed my mind more than once. I love dancy stuff... daft punk, prodigy, basement jaxx, fatboy slim, chemical brothers. But I dont really want to do the john travolta bit surrounded by extroverts.

Suppose it at least shows we appreciate the 'wake up' call of fast paced beats (which because they mirror a fast pulse are a stimulus).

For me it is because I drive a lot in my job and therefore I like to zoom around with some serious beats :)

VNV Nation, I guess.

Can't seem to make myself sick of it.

Haven't done -OMGZ favorite band ever!!- since Duran Duran, the Smiths and the Cocteau Twins.

Which reminds me of a Moldy Peaches song. :D

When I was in middle school, I had a group of friends.

We wore tight jeans and sunglasses and we listened to Duran Duran.

There were 6 of us so when we played it didn't add up you see.

Everybody had a Duran Duran boyfriend but me.

I wasn't dating Nick Rhodes, I wasn't dating Roger Taylor, I wasn't dating John Taylor I wasn't dating Andy Taylor, I wasn't dating Simon Le Bon.

I was sitting by myself with my collar up, a tear in my eye and an aching in my heart.

And my converse on.

My converse on.

My glow- in- the- dark with pink fat laces, zebra- striped converse on.

For the record, this doesn't really apply to my girlhood. I was dating John Taylor.

Their song, Forsaken, makes me feel like dying...in a good way. I haven't gotten sick of them yet, either.

As for other bands, I pretty much like anything techno. Stuff with sweeping orchestral strings mixed with electronic beats seems to be my favorite. Oh, and chanting or choirs in the background.

Oh, I call that one the suicide song. It is not safe to listen to that one while depressed.

'Further' is another one of my favorites by them; it has the same emotional intensity as the vocal version of Forsaken but doesn't make me want to slit my wrists. :)

I feel most modern mainstream rap is crap. So is modern pop country. Top 40 generally blows ass.

Peter Gabriel era was the best, but I still like some of their stuff after the mid-seventies (IIRC, that's when Gabriel left).

Also, as an addition, I love Ian Anderson's solo stuff.

i wonder why i hadn't yet contributed to this thread....maybe because it's so impossible to choose just one favorite.

favorite composers: Bach, Scott Joplin, Aaron Copland

favorite "solo artists": Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Roger Miller, Dean Martin, edit: I forgot about Bill Withers

(my favorites in the above categories are much more definite than the following category, which I will explain below)

favorite bands: Tool (and APC's first 2 albums), Muse, MewithoutYou, BRMC, Super Furry Animals, The Cure, The Jesus and Mary Chain, QOTSA

(there are so many other bands that I love...but I guess I've listened to the above bands the most and I own the most albums by them.)

Tool is my favorite band currently. I've been listening to them for many years now. Just listening to the first few notes of any song is enough to lift my spirits.

Tool is an old standby, along with Pink Floyd, Soundgarden (badmotorfinger vintage), B.O.C. Rage Against The Machine and of course Black Sabbath.

Beyond that, I love sludgy, mid-tempo, riff-intensive, Sabbath-esque, THC saturated, lyrical nonsense. Fu Manchu, Sasquatch, The Melvins, Clutch, Sixty-Watt Shaman, Monster Magnet, Obsessed are favorites, among many others.

Also love contemporary Space Rock-inspired stuff ie: 35007, Novadriver, FBFOS, etc.

My favorite band is the Grateful Dead. I prefer the Garcia/Hunter songwriting duo to Lennon/McCartney any day of the week. I am absolutely obsessed with their recorded live shows from 1968-1978. If I had to pick just one, it would be Bob Dylan.

Bob Dylan, The Who, The Grateful Dead

I like almost any classic rock, or classic jazz, or classical period, anything.

Others way up there:
Henry Mancini, (INTP), Donovan, any and all Jazz, especially: Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Count Basie, Pete Fountain, Sarah Vaughn, Al Green, Earth Wind and Fire, Iron Butterfly, Creedence Clearwater, etc, etc.

I will insert more later...

Tonys Bennetts "I left my heart in san francisco" is a favorite.

I like a variety of styles including classic rock from the 70s and 80s, Folk, Bluegrass, Classical, Reagae, Calypso, Japanese flute, Harp, Piano, etc.

I don't like rap, hiphop, whiny country, whiny rock like "Heart", certain Opera, or alternative music much, but I can listen to a little of it before I turn it off.

I'm undecided, between King Crimson and Pink Floyd.

For a single individual's performance, I would say, Sting or Eric Clapton. And I should also consider Bob Dylan (some of his songs were probably inspired by some sort of drug's influence, though damn he was interesting.)

I have yet to listen to Tool, though I'll keep them in mind

Very interesting thread. I just had to read all the replies and see everyone's tastes and compare with mine. A lot of the bands some people like I have never really listened to, or in many cases never even heard of.

I guess I'd have to attribute the differences then to environment, since we're exposed to different music, and age obviously.

I love Metallica, Pink Floyd, Oasis, and a few others. Personally I think the most powerful band to emerge since Nirvana is My Chemical Romance.

I'm curious as to the reason why people like the bands they like. Personally I like songs that are darkly rich with emotion. To make a comparison that I hope won't anger too many people, Linkin Park makes very good music, but fails to hit the emotional sweet spot that My Chemical Romance hits.

Beatles
Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
the Who
Jimi Hendrix Experience
the Kinks
Iggy and the Stooges
the Velvet Underground
King Crimson (their 1973-'75 period)
Sex Pistols
Black Sabbath
Pink Floyd (prior to The Wall)
Motorhead
the Yardbirds (especially the Jeff Beck period)
the Small Faces (really been into them a lot the last couple of years, if you like British Invasion, check them out!)

Some of my favorite contemporary bands/musicians are Los Straightjackets, the Ghastly Ones, Hank Williams III, Toots & the Maytals, Buddy Guy, the Black Keys, the Derek Trucks Band, and whatever Jack White's up to lately.

To everyone who is answering this question:

What does this choice say about you? Is it important that the music you listen to be of a certain quality (broadly stated, "quality" as in "possessing a set of characteristics")? Did hearing your now-favorite artists initially break you out of listening to a style of music you now hold as inferior? Do you think any of these things are objective? Can you back it up?

7 Aug 2009, 07:08 PM
What does this choice say about you?
Well, I suppose you could say that I've always been into pop/rock music with a twist. I don't like conventional conventional. I like it to be a bit out there experimentally speaking but I don't actively seek experimental music. In my opinion when you experiment with no roots to base it on then it's sort of all for naught.

Is it important that the music you listen to be of a certain quality (broadly stated, "quality" as in "possessing a set of characteristics")?
I don't like limiting myself to a set of characteristics, because I want to be as open-minded musically as I can. However I will say my tastes are refined to the degree that most other genres don't compare (mainstream rock and rap to name a few).

Did hearing your now-favorite artists initially break you out of listening to a style of music you now hold as inferior?
No, I've always been into Beatles-like music ever since I was a child. I really haven't gotten too deep in any other genre except Classic Rock.

Do you think any of these things are objective?
No, I think music is a very subjective thing, and I believe it has a lot to do with what you listened to when you were younger.

Can you back it up?
?

To everyone who is answering this question:

What does this choice say about you? Is it important that the music you listen to be of a certain quality (broadly stated, "quality" as in "possessing a set of characteristics")?

I will endeavor to answer your questions to the best of my ability. These are challenging and thought-provoking questions, so sorry if I ramble a bit.

Hmmm, what do my choices say about me? That I like Rock' n 'Roll! I purposely limited the scope of my list to rock though, so as not to make an incredibly long, silly list (which I wound up doing anyway).

I'm also really into the blues, jazz, old school country, bluegrass, Jamaican ska & reggae, soul, funk, surf, and a lot of world music. (much of the stuff I listen to was recorded pre-1970, but it doesn't have to be vintage for me to like it).

My choices also reflect my age (I'm 48). There have been a lot of good bands that have come along over the years, but the bands on my list are the ones that I always return to. I've been infatuated with other bands over the years, such as the Pixies, Husker Du, the Butthole Surfers, Joy Division, Gang of Four, Captain Beefheart, et al, but they didn't make it onto my top 15 list.

I wish that my top favorites weren't quite so popular, they're all zillion album sellers. At first glance that would indicate that I have rather pedestrian tastes. I just love a lot of rock from the mid 60's through early 70's, its a big part of who I am. These are the bands who, to my ears, did it best.

Ten years ago I could play most of the biggest hits of my top 5 fave bands, I wish I still could (my memory has gotten really bad the past few years, and if I don't practice a song regularly, my brain doesn't retain it). I still remember most of the main riffs at least though. It's a great natural high to learn how to play a riff that has thrilled me since I was a kid.

Is it important that the music you listen to be of a certain quality (broadly stated, "quality" as in "possessing a set of characteristics")?

When I was younger, I was all about gnarly guitar riffage. As I've gotten older, I've grown to appreciate many other aspects of music. I used to generally avoid mellow music, now I love listening to it (LOL- I'm definitely getting old!) One of my favorite cds this summer has been "Jazz Samba" by Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd, and its some of the most relaxing music that I know of.

Some music is definitely more technically challenging than others. Sometimes I'll be in the mood to listen to a pyrotechnic style of playing, sometimes a more melodic or rhythmically complex style. And sometimes I just think "Fuck musicianship, I just want some good ol' primal rock- n-roll!"

Did hearing your now-favorite artists initially break you out of listening to a style of music you now hold as inferior?

Hmmm, another tough question. There have been some recording artists who definitely were enlightening for me, and broadened my tastes, such as John Coltrane. I used to dislike most country and reggae, but now I'm crazy about a lot of it. It was 'uncool' to like country music when I was in high school, and a lot of my friends still look at me like I'm from Mars if I play some George Jones or Buck Owens - but there's some soulful, quality music there if you open up your ears enough to accept it. Same goes for hip hop. Of course there is crap in every genre as well.

Some of my old friends are really into progressive rock and look down on bands like the Ramones. Songs by Yes are a million times harder to play by the Ramones, so they think that makes Yes the better band. Are they right? Does having a higher degree of musicianship make you a better band? To a degree, but in rock I think the overall energy and hooks are just as important.

I don't really hold any styles as inferior. I don't like opera, but that's just me. I don't listen to much hip hop nowadays, but sometimes I'll hear something that I really like (and I do like a lot of old school hip hop, such as Public Enemy).

There are some bands I liked as a teenager, such as Alice Cooper, Deep Purple and Aerosmith, that I quit listening to in the eighties, and I even considered cheesy for a while, but over time I started listening to them again (a few people I know think that I'm crazy for liking them, though). So even if you feel that your tastes have evolved beyond a certain point, you might find that you're evolving in a circle.

Do you think any of these things are objective?

Well IMO they're more subjective than objective. But not 100% one or the other.

I definitely prefer Jamaican ska & reggae over English ska & reggae, but does that make the English versions inferior? Do the Jamaicans play and sing with more soul, or am I just imagining that? Its really just a matter of taste.

Can you back it up?

Heck no. Wouldn't even know where to begin.

No, I think music is a very subjective thing, and I believe it has a lot to do with what you listened to when you were younger.

?

Thanks for answering. By asking "can you back up your opinions?", I'm trying to find what people think of as "objective" in music. An example would be someone who likes "the most brutal music." They'd be able to point out the subtleties of such a style better than a less dogmatic fan.

It's a backwards way to sort the broad from the deep in music taste.

I had assumed INTPs would have fairly broad tastes (just judging by myself), and I don't know if it's true. Can it really be considered 'broad' taste to like music that 'makes you feel a certain way'?

It seems like music is inherently subjective..I don't understand your question.

I think you're talking about this:

"Can it really be considered 'broad' taste to like music that 'makes you feel a certain way'?"

I think there's a difference in music of "breadth" and "depth". Broad musical taste would mean you like a lot of different things. Deep musical taste would mean that you stick to only a few things. A person with broad tastes will hear something differently than someone with deep tastes. These are relative, but I think the dichotomy is valuable.

Even if music is inherently subjective, I think there might be a pattern to the enjoyment of music. It's probably mostly culturally defined.

Am I the only one here who can't think of one single band that I have liked all of their songs (and thus it can count as a 'favourite')? I like random songs of various bands and styles, but there's no band and or even album that I have liked all of the songs.

For instance, my favourite song has been for many years "Wish you were here" of Pink Floyd, but I can hardly stand anything else of them.

Anyway, I generally like simplistic music and focus more on the lyrics, with some exceptions of some really very musically atmospheric songs that can be mediocre (for my taste) lyrically.

uhh, i have favorites, as in plural

Spoon
Rage Against The Machine
Minus the Bear
The Fall of Troy
Between the Buried and Me
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Queens of the Stone Age
The Doors
Pinback
HORSE the band
Modest Mouse

there are other "runners up," but this is my top-bands-list, currently, in no specific order

I generally listen to whatever happens to match my mood, regardless. That said, these are my favourites, in terms of enjoying multiple albums of each over a longish period of time (just liking one or two songs from a band = didn't make the list, otherwise the list would easily hit triple figures many times over). I've liked these since my teens, except Nick Cave who is a more recent discovery:

Queen
Pink Floyd
Alice Cooper
Nick Cave

Linkin Park nearly made the cut, as did Dido, Mika, The Cranberries, Split Enz, and Pearl Jam.

The first INTP female i've ever met irl was obsessed with Nightwish.
Haven't heard their best yet- I'm more of a Tool fan when it comes to INTP bands. Interpol's another favorite, Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, Led Zeppelin and some of the Cure songs.

I'd like to say 'perfectionist' metal with great lyrics, somewhat progressive and alternative, really good bass, distortion- feels really good on the ears.

What does this choice say about you?

That I'm overly dramatic :p.

Is it important that the music you listen to be of a certain quality (broadly stated, "quality" as in "possessing a set of characteristics")?

Yeah. The music has to have many layers, it has to provoke emotion, it has to have 'secret' moments - little pockets of magic, I'd prefer the lyrics to mean something to me personally - especially if I can hear what they're saying, light and shade, variety and amazing singing.

Did hearing your now-favorite artists initially break you out of listening to a style of music you now hold as inferior?

I used to listen to bands like coldplay, jet, the eagles, fleetwood mac, powderfinger, wolfmother and the foo fighters. I still like them to a degree, but their music is too simple for me now.

Do you think any of these things are objective? Can you back it up?

Probably not, I know the basics of music - I studied piano for about 4 years - but I couldn't tell you in 'objective' technical terms why I prefer certain types of music.

I saw Nightwish in concert with their new singer. It was the best concert I've ever been to. I already listed mine, but that was several pages and a couple years back. Favorites:

Dream Theater
Ayreon
Symphony X
Pain Of Salvation
Nightwish
Therion
Savatage
Stratovarius
Children Of Bodom
Angra

What does this choice say about you?

I like loud, fast, powerful, epic metal with heavy symphonic and operatic elements. A lot of them make me feel powerful and instigate fantasies of myself being powerful.

Is it important that the music you listen to be of a certain quality (broadly stated, "quality" as in "possessing a set of characteristics")?

Certainly. I have a Pandora account, which, in case you don't know, plays songs according to similarities in song "genes" (each one has hundreds that describe it) and I find that I really dislike some, like some, and really like some that Pandora shows as sounding very similar.

Did hearing your now-favorite artists initially break you out of listening to a style of music you now hold as inferior?

Yes. My favorite was Boyz II Men, then I heard Metallica and that became my favorite. Then System Of A Down did. I then listened to Dream Theater and was turned on to progressive metal, then symphonic metal. I now rarely listen to Metallica, sometimes SOAD, and never to B2M. I view my favorites, as well as lots I don't like as much as them, as way above Metallica and SOAD now.

Do you think any of these things are objective?

I think some are, but others I can't help but think that I'm biased because I know who is playing the song. "If so-and-so was playing this, would I like it more or less?" I think I'm subjective, but I try not to be.

Can you back it up?

Not sure.
