Have you ever invented anything or designed anything original?

Depends on what you mean by original, and how substantial. And what if it didn't get finished?

Duzzn't matter, really. Just have you come up with something original... I'll let you define 'original'... finished or not.

i come up with original ideas in my head everyday, all the time.
i only write down / complete / pursue about 2% of them.

These are the only ones I've developed alone and that are respectably usable/functional/whatever: 1 (http://incise.org/index.cgi/py-libmpdclient2) 2 (http://incise.org/index.cgi/TinyWM) 3 (http://incise.org/index.cgi/Whimsy) (all programming projects)
The first two are actually distributed and used by people, and the last one is in a alpha-beta-ish stage.

I did a projective drawing once and it ended up looking like a jagged winged angel of death. I don't think its original but it was pretty fucking creepy after not sleeping for a couple of days and being in a drug-induced stupor.

Recently - brackets and hubs to put bigger brakes on my car (the original brakes were very small and very scary):

Neither were really original per se, but were unique to the specific application. I've done a little bit of stuff like this over the years, but don't think I've come up with anything revolutionary, or at least when I thought I had, always found someone else had already done it.

I made a PHP script that would list images from various folders on my ftp... but it didn't work properly, so I did something else, like the good INTP I am...
Also I 'invented' a smoothie recipe that works nicely for my taste. It is a start I suppose.
Oh! I have this great idea for a program that turn your iTunes library into an html formatted list of artists and albums. I just need to... learn C or something to make the program!

Yes. Besides the boring stuff I design at my day job (ASIC designer) I write (http://users.wpi.edu/~squirrel/math/) lots of (http://users.wpi.edu/~squirrel/programs/) computer programs (http://users.wpi.edu/~squirrel/ocamlrt/), and occasionally design little board-level electronic thingies. Designing and inventing is the spice of my life; along with music (which I have been known to compose on occasion) it's my primary creative outlet. And despite not being artsy I'd describe myself primarily as a creative rather than scientific person. I wonder if this distinction is an INTP vs. INTJ sort of thing?

I was the primary inventor on two patents pending (not sure if they ever went through) at a company I worked for about 10 years ago. One was a country table that was used in software globalization ... really nothing more than a glorified hashtable. The other was a semi-intelligent marketing object that would display marketing information based upon user demographics and collected information profiles.
Also wrote a parser and comparison engine for DNA sequences as part of a pay-per-view genomic data site.
Other than that, I've written an maintained about a dozen different financial and finance related softare applications.

I designed a couple of murals, some paintings and a communion table cloth for the church that I went to when I was growing up.
My church posted a picture of the table cloth online (but you can't google it unless you know my actual name, which you don't) and this other church in the States (I don't remember which state) saw it and contacted my church because they wanted one like it.
So, then my church got into contact with me and asked me to email the american church and I just never did because I didn't really know what they wanted me to do and I didn't want to make another table cloth because I already made the first one and it's done and I don't want to do it again because that would be horrifically boring.
Anyhow.
This post is very rambling and annoying. I apologize for that.

ATMega16 - it's on this board:
http://www.futurlec.com.au/ATMegaTraining.jsp
Sold as a ATMega163 though, which tripped me up for a bit, some slight differences in control registers, really frustrating until I pulled the sticker off the uC and found it was an imposter. I think the price has gone up, but it was a good little trainer, easy access to all the ports, made life very simple.
After making something work, the plan was to make it again, but smaller, possibly putting all the glue logic on this board:
http://www.futurlec.com.au/ATMegaDevBoard.jsp
But hasn't happened yet, moved on to other stuff. Still, there's hope.

Have you considered designing the board yourself? BatchPCB (http://www.batchpcb.com/) does a really good job, for real cheap. I got a double-sided board there (with solder mask and silkscreen, no less!) for ~$15 including shipping.

I was pretty crafty with Legos and K'nex.
I designed a little anti-gravity device out of K'nex and magnets back in early high school. Same type of repulsion used by certain bullet trains.
If utilized in a motor, I'm sure it could get some good longevity. Since true magnets maintain their integrity, I saw the potential for a near-perpetual motion machine. I came across a certain magnet motor inventor whom, along with his small group, went missing as they were moving across the country to expand their company. Back then it wasn't likely the government was willing to give up revenue from fossil fuel sources (among other things).
Lost interest... and never really cared to learn motors intimately.

I've built a few inventions and actually used them with people. Nothing special at all. They were useful or fun, but not life changing. I'm pretty good at seeing a need and then starting immediately to build something for it. I like to just use whatever is around. If I need more, I hope the store is open, because if I have to wait until tomorrow I might very well lose all interest in the project. Unless I can convince somebody to pay me for it. :) Do little businesses count? I've probably run/quit/failed like 4 or 5 of them. I used to be fascinated with building devices used for smoke marijuana. ;)

I have two patents, and 8 patent applications on six inventions. All crop science related. I posted details on a different thread so won't double up on it.
I am also quite interested in functional foods (will probably pursue some ip on this in my next venture) and genetic engineering (I have a lab in my stable for this, it's a hobby but I am doing some interesting stuff that I might patent in the future). I am messing around with tree crossbreeding as well, I have an interest in cold climate adapted fruit crops. Plus methods for removing heavy metals from soil, and phyto mining are interesting I have some ideas on these.

An invention ...
HeadPack (tm) - instead of a 'back pack' a platform to fit on your head to
carry stuff. Based on how they do it in Africa. Except my idea makes balancing easier as there are handles to help balance the load.
Following picture taken by a friend who climbed mt Kilimanjaro in Africa and was amazed by the amount of stuff the porters carried on their heads.

Have you ever invented anything or designed anything original?
Who hasn't?
If we're confining ourselves to signficant, marketed/made-public designs, then I regrettably say "no". I can say only that I have invented things which I thought were "original" and novel, only to later find someone else receive credit for them in some other public forum/market (a source of grinding, angst-fomenting vexation (http://forums.intpcentral.com/showthread.php?t=25984)). I presently hold things which I feel are "original" and novel that I have not yet found in any public forum/market, but I see no productive manner in which to release them such that any of the following are assured a) credit b) profit c) non-triage of my life as it is.
edit: woe-is-me, sorry.

I design things fairly often to customize them for our use. I designed the chicken coop to fit in a particular size space. I needed nest boxes of different sizes for different types of birds. I designed a nest condo thing with doors & removable floors & walls for cleaning. It's cool (for that kind of thing). I'm pretty good at sitting down & turning a need into a functional object.
