Some of the Northern European coutry's use the EURO, some do not. The french also refuse to learn foreign languages, etc... I can go on forever. If I had known that you English would be so sensitive about that matter, I would have made a separate category to avoid useless fuss like this. *Sight*

Look at a map. I think you'll find the UK is north west europe, and since there is nothing north or west of it.. it could be called either, but I have never heard the UK described as Western Europe.

Dont think I was turning it into a big deal. My comments on idealogy were not intended at the poll, just as an aside.
On reflection, I've never really heard of Britain described as Western Europe, but occasionally as Northern Europe.

in north americans schools it's generally taught that Britain is part of Western Europe. Britain is just like every other european country (and like Canada too), however, in that they believe they deserve to be recognized as unique. If the British were leading the EU they would naturally be happy to be called europeans, but it's impossible with the limitless extent of french/german beureucracy feeling overly self-important themselves
Geoff
24 Jan 2005, 02:10 PM
I think the reason we historically do not feel part of Western Europe goes back to the power blocs of the middle ages. We are unlikely to feel part of a catholic grouping! Witness the Armada.
(Church of England/Protestant makes us closer to a Northern Europe feel).
What do you mean 'if' we were leading the EU, this is the year of Britain's turn, yet we do not feel European. It is virtually a curse word in the UK.

technically britain is 'leading the eu' but we all know that the overrepresented French and German beuraucracy is what calls the shots. Taiwan is technically part of China but in a more realistic sense it is a completely different country

Chauvinism is derived from Chauvin, who was such a big fan of Napoleon that "chauvinism" became a word to indicate excessive patriotism.

The brits (who are a rag tag collection anyway, with NI seperated by water) use the word continent, as in "on the continent", mainly historically to describe sunny holiday places like France.
I think there is some problem with nomenclature too here. I chose Western Eur. It is the best answer available. And we are in the EU/Maastricht treaty/CAP etc. etc. etc. (except the Euro - which I personally believe has problems with the way deficit rules have been both set up and broken).

France is the centre of the world.
Anyone to the left is in the "West".
Anyone to the right is in the "East".
Anyone closer to the Arctic is in the "North".
Anyone closer to the Antarctic is in the "South".
Here is a visual aid to help you see how things really are:
