View Full Version : Bad Memory

Do any of you guys also have a bad memory for events, and facts that aren't related to what we are currently interested in. I myself memorized 32 digits of pi easily, but I can't remember things like people's names and such unless I know that I will be seeing them every day. Is it our undeveloped Se and Si? or do we just not are enough about other people (underdeveloped Fi and Fe).

I admit I have a poor memory for names. Otherwise, I remember faces, situations, dialogues, facts, [...], in detail - assuming I was paying attention in the first place. Not necessarily a good thing, I guess it depends on how you look at it.

(But then again, I am not the typical INTP...)

I remember stuff that I do regularly
(Well, I'd hope so! *TongueInCheek* With what nonregular stuff do you have the most memory trouble, though?)

What I notice most is a difficulty remembering linear instructions/directions, particularly in order. Nonlinear... things - like a nonlinear set of instructions when possible - are much more comfortable to hold in the mind.

I remember to do tasks that are written down. I'm not going to remember stuff I did last week or maybe even yesterday. At work when I'm asked what I did yesterday, sometimes I remember other times I say "I don't remember, I worked.. or something"

I might plan to do something later in the day such as mention something in an email or take something with me some-place, usualy i dont remember the fact i intended to do it untill i am in the place where i made the intention in the first place, and the cycle continues, so i will often find myself in certain places where i have made multiple intentions trying to remember to do them later.as for people i can usualy remember a face or at least recognise it as familiar.≈

I have big troubles remembering linear things (like series of numbers, instructions, to-do lists) unless I can link them logically to each other. There are certain series of numbers I can easily remember after the first time I've seen them, simply because the numbers "fit." It's hard to explain, some numbers just fit together and some don't.

I also have troubles remembering what I did last day, or last week. When someone asks me what I did or ate yesterday, I sometimes pause to think very hard.

Not to mention those times you seem to have trouble coming up with my name...

I forget what day it is constantly.

I don't exactly forget what day it is.. but sometimes I will talk about "today" whatever today would be, and I would be a day ahead. Last week I was telling my friend I wanted to do something with him tomorrow, but it was Thursday, and I thought it was Friday.. and last night my friend was telling me about something, then I asked, what happened on Monday because he was telling me a story, and after thinking a few moments he realized that the day was Monday and that what he had just been talking about is what had happened on Monday..

Hehe, I have a crap memory for names, where I left stuff, days, appointments. However, get me onto dry, technical stuff, like math, technology, or psycology, and I can usually remember the basic facts after one study, with more details being absorbed with repetition.

I read somewhere that the best way to memorize things for NP types is using mind maps. Give it a shot it works pretty well. I have trouble with linear stuff as well, I'm glad you pointed out what type of remembering it is. I was able to memorize 32 digits of pi though :-), too bad that won't help me in life.

I have trouble with names and phone numbers. Little detailed daily information.

And yet I am a master of trivia games! Crazy.

yes, names are awful, I've developed ways to talk to people for hours without ever saying their name, as I don't remember it. (And sometimes these are people I've known for ages- but they all seem to remember my name ). But I do remember situations and context, and so I remeber who they are, just not what I ought to be calling them.

I memorized 50 digits of pi in 60-120 seconds 5 years ago. The following year I memorized the first 4 periods of the periodic table in 5 minutes. I always forget mundain things, though, like taking medicine, brushing my teeth, etc. I remember both names and faces really well, and I can walk you through video games I've beaten 10+ years ago, but I'm not very dependable- I always find myself forgetting to bring things to events that I volunteer to bring (if I remember to attend the event).

I forget things I talked about a few moments after talking about it. But facts and things that has had my deep interest will stay with me clearly. I do forget when I am asked to help with something or show up to appointments. I too forget to brush my teeth, taking medicine and stuff like that.

Names are iffy with me. Sometimes I remember the first letter. Or a letter I associate with the first letter for some reason. (Example: Your name is Liz. Liz is short for Elizabeth. Elizabeth starts with E, as does the word Elephant. Elephants live in Africa, so I associate your name with the letter A.) Faces I can remember, but I never remember where I know someone from, or if I manage to remember where I saw someone I don't remember if I actually met them, or if I just saw them across a room or something else equally random.
I also have a horrible time trying to remember assignments. I have to write three or four notes explaining them step by step, or I'm lost when I go to do whatever it is, even if only an hour has elapsed. I'm pretty good about remembering appointments, usually because I get disproportionately anxious before them.

I can watch a movie, walk out, and only remember about two things about it. Of course that also depends on whether the film is memorable or not.

Not really good with names either, although I seem to remember things like news stories and such, pretty well.

As with most people I think we tend to remember what we find to be important. But we probably think we can't remember anything because everyday life doesn't force us to use our memory of what we find as important. No one comes up to us asking the digits of pi, or physics formulas, even though we probably have many memorized. Whoever made the quote "simple minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, but great minds talk about ideas" (its not word for word cause my memory is bad :-) ), must be an NT of some kind.

The day, the date, brushing teeth, taking out the garbage, eating, appointments, times for appointments, and other things of that nature I forget almost instantly. Other types of information I retain pretty well, especially if I'm interested in it, whether I am paying attention or not.
