View Full Version : What NT type do you relate best?

I personally relate better to ENTJs than ENTPs and INTJs because they have thinking as their superior function. And when arguing they are much more likely to appeal to hard logic as opposed to intuition or emotion both of which are a source of stress for me, and as for many INTPs as we tend to have little patience with logic being debased.
They also tend to share out attitude towards ethics, whereas you can figure out the right thing to do solely in virtue of dispassionate reasoning and you never have to think about how you feel about the situation. Nor do you have to empathize with others or try to like them, you just have to treat them fairly. This is what one ENTJ said that I know. Not sure if I, or most INTPs would entirely accept this statement, as Ti tends to be quite different from Te in this regard, but we definitely would sympathize with him on the note of having ethics founded only on dispassionate reasoning and how you never need to engage with emotions in order to find virtue.
For those reasons, I'd argue, we would have an easier time relating to ENTJs, as NTs, they share many of our tastes and prejudices and as thorough-going Thinkers have a communication style that is more compatible with ours than that of the highly intuitive ENTP and INTJ.

I like ENTPs better, especially if I'm in the mood to have fun.
xNTJs usually get too serious for me.
Now, if I am trying to complete a PROJECT or accomplish a task efficiently, I'd probably choose the J. I have the feeling very little work would get done, if it was just me and the ENTP running things.

What about when arguing though...dont the ENTPs and INTJs tend to irritate you by being so much more intuitive than logical?
Thats the problem that I've had with INTJs first and foremost... not right away thought... initially they show their Te more than anything else... but when you get into deeper discussions with them... their Intuitive preponderance over analytical thought makes it difficult to investigate ideas with rigor..
ENTPs were easier to work with because they..as right-brainers explore ideas more easily and the Ti is significantly more analytical than Te...and for the very least ENTPs could improvise much better on the fly... whereas the INTJs were forced to cling to their intuitions..
I'd say if you want to get work done you're best going with an ENTJ...they have the strongest J preferrence..
If you want to explore ideas in depth..not necessarily analyze them..INTJ is the one to go with...
If you want a good rhetoric contest... go with the ENTP...
Yet if you want a logician to help you investigate complex philosophical phenomena that need rigorous analysis... your best bet is another INTP... though ENTJ would be far superior to the other 2 as Thinking is still their first function..
NTJs far too serious for you... I dont know if I'd have a problem with this... INTPs seem like happy go lucky bunch on the outside because the world sees their Intuition (Ne) and not Thinking... even though Thinking probably influences them more as it is the first function...so INTPs are actually a lot more serious than they appear to be...(Even Paul James noticed this in the INTP profile... where he took note of the 'dualism' that INTPs experience as a result of the Ti-Ne contrast)
INTJs on the contrary, at their core, are far less serious than INTPs. You know how Si is almost a child-like function? Ni, being on the same path--Introverted Perceiving isnt far different, its quite playful yet cant manifest itself very clearly because the Te is on the outside guarding it. Much like the INTPs's seriousness doesnt show clearly in the world. So INTJs are actually much more laid back than they appear to be and ENTJs and INTPs are far more intense than they are. ENTJs clearly appear to be intense because they are so focused on the External world. INTPs direct all of that energy into the inner world. Just because we dont see their intensity, it doesnt mean its not there, it is just internally focused. So basically ENTJs tend to be genuinely very serious people, yet INTJs are not. And INTPs are much less of the live and let live type than they may seem.
How does that sound?

I find other factors besides type more useful in quantifying the NTs or NFs I get along with better. Shared or common experiences, similar interests, overall intellectual drive and capability, similar values, and so on. Given the small sample size of NTs I've come across in my life and actually gotten to know well enough to determine with any degree of significance how well we relate, I can give no meaningful answer to the question. Just that exact type plays a back seat to other things, especially when restricting the examination to the NT temperament.

to add on to what hustler said, i have been both close friends with and severely annoyed by varying people of all 3 subtypes, sometimes in the same individual.
it is definitely a matter of how that person acts within the confines of typical behavior proscribed by their type, rather than how their type proscribes their behavior.

I must say that now, after having hung out with my ENTP and INTJ friend at the same time, and thought this question over more thoroughly, I have to change my vote.
Definitely not ENTJs that I relate to best.
ENTP, simply because of the similar communication style. My ENTP friend and I could understand how one another thinks much more easily and relate on the personal level more fluently than either one of us could with the INTJ.
I thought the ENTJ would be the easiest to argue with, but the differences in communication were far too great. This wasnt a problem at all with the ENTP since we both use Ne to get our ideas out to the table and analyze them in the same fashion and both have an experiential and not structured mode of learning. So the ENTP would definitely be the best for me and most INTPs to explore ideas with, perhaps another INTP would be ideal. Yet again the ENTP would have an edge on that because his Ne could really stimulate you quite a bit and force you to think outside of the box. This will probably shake you out of some of the habits of your temperament that another INTP would encourage you to stay in.

Agreed.
ENTPs - we're both pretty much both nuts. They're just more outgoing about it.
INTJs are fun too - but they tend to be turned off when the conversation turns to horse and/or midget porn.

ENTPs ... same preferences and one shift order for each process. Plus I can be pretty dang random. It makes me LOOK like an ENTP.

ENTP. sometimes i go long periods (days-a few days) as one. and the more stimulating the environment at the time the less time i need to relinquish into introversion. sometimes i think i could be one for months, years, or forever if my outside environment ever became stimulating enough.

Ah, I'd cut it down to ENTP vs. ENTJ.
ENTPs are more fun. ENTJs more... erm... I don't even know what, but I'm drawn to them for their unique qualities.
INTJs kinda creep me out in a comfortable way, because I know they're scheming something even my constant paranoia can't predict, and they won't let a word of it slip. ;)

I'd like to scratch my prior answer, since I was limiting myself to the hidden limitations of the question.
I'm not sure how to answer the question now, due to the inherent complexity of interactions with others.

Yes, I agree. Each offers their own brand of kink, and each'll get your rocks off accordingly. ;)

I have a really good INTJ friend, and I've always kind of looked up to him. I've never really understood having a "role model" but he's the closest I've come to having one. He's also the only person I completely trust. I also like that we've come up with some similar beliefs/morals from a rational perspective. For instance, you can find a lot of anti-drug people, but most of them approach this stance in a very emotional manner, or just believe everything their told.
People have mentioned having more "fun" with an extrovert. Weird. We have fun and we have a similar sense of humor in many ways.

Perfect description of my INTJ friend. It's an imbalanced relationship because even though I scheme as much as her, mine usually slip out. Or I just blush like a sonofabitch and she can figure out what I'm thinking about.
But I chose ENTP for basically all the reasons everyone else has listed.

Yes, but ENTJs are assholes, too. Why INTJs over them?

ENTP and ENTJ.. they can be "I"s, but not moreso than me. Introverts aren't anymore interested in conversing than I am, so it's not easy to relate without having a good topic for discussion, or work to do.

INTJs aren't that bad... o_O On the basis that I have several INTJ acquaintances who could be considered friends, depending on your definition of a friend...

Hmmm.. personalitypage.com has this to say:
"Although two well-developed individuals of any type can enjoy a healthy relationship, the INTP's natural partner is the ENTJ, or the ESTJ. The INTP's dominant function of Introverted Thinking is best matched with a partner whose personality is dominated by Extraverted Thinking. The INTP/ENTJ match is ideal, because these types shared Intuition as a common way of perceiving the world, but INTP/ESTJ is also a good match."
Granted, this is in reference to romantic relationships, but still-- I am a bit skeptical. Seems like way to much pushy-J for me...

Too many variations within each type to say for sure.

Cost/benefit, mate. Can't say about the ESTJs... sounds like a nightmare relationship. Note I've only ever tried SPs, NTs, and the rare NF. But if you want rough kink without having to think, ENTJ is your best bet. ;)

I get a very good vibe with the ENTPs. The worse match is probably INTJ - they are too serious for me, I am too goofy for them, I guess. I tend to have a bit of a high brow attitude towards the ENTJs, probably because I look down on that much Extraverted Thinking.
