View Full Version : tragula Poll Restriction

I think tragula should be restricted to a maximum of 40 polls per day. Furthermore, at least 25% of his polls must have exclusive option selection (no checkmarks). Furthermore, one poll per year must make some kind of damn sense.

i know the irony is almost too cliched, but couldn't you have a poll to decide?

I bet more people like polls than don't! And if you don't then just ignore it :-)
It's the best way to collect opinions and see what a broad range of people think. A lot of people who won't comment, are happy to vote!
I think they should collect all the polls somewhere to browse...

Does it matter? Tragula could be asking the same question without a poll. Wouldn't he be getting the same responding posts?

Polls hang around forever because voting bumps them. And tragulas choices always seem to be designed to produce no clear picture of anyones opinion on anything.

I agree, tragula sure does have a thing for polls. We have been talking about maybe cutting down on the number of stupid polls and as much as I get sick of seeing them tragulas polls are not stupid. He asks a lot of very interesting (imo) questions. I am checking to see if we can change the forums settings so that voting on a poll doesn't bump the thread to the top.

Exactly.
1. Tragula's polls are thought provoking.
2. Polls are indeed fun - one can think about the question from two perspectives : in the "poll" part, and in the "posting" part.
3. If someone is finding ways to phrase topics to encourage discussion and thought - what does it matter that part of how they do that is by making it into a poll ? (and, see 2.)
Edit : what may not be apparent is : many polls are not what statiticians call polls... polls can also be tools for encouraging reflection, and discussion - the classic "good questions are more important than answers..." (and, see 3.)

That would be greatly appreciated.

We were making teams, and no one told me ? ;)
-----
By the way, this, that I'm doing right now - this is a non-standard way of adding one's thoughts to a thread... granted, it may be missed by some - so, it isn't a recommended way of contributing to a discussion, for that.
Using standard tools in ways that work best for us seems to be an INTP trait.
BUT, remember, maybe a poll, or a thread, seems old hat to people who followed it when it was current... but for newcomers - it's new (besides, how many times have we read "this has been discussed before" :) - and if people start posting in it again... *everything old is new again*)

Sure polls get bumped up when they get votes, but aside from that, polls are still "better" than getting people to post since people are more likely vote on a poll than reply. I know that's a personal opinion, but I doubt I'm the only one who thinks like that, I find that replying means you have to be much more forward with whatever you're thinking and I personally don't feel "that" open explaining everything if I just have a small comment, hence my lower post count and why I never really talk on IRC, on the other hand, with voting you get your opinion across without really having to explain why you think it; I'd much rather vote in a poll than have a one line post that says little but my opinion, so that's what I do then.
...but when I do post, I tend to say whatever I think...and it can get long...;)

I think we have enough people lurking on any given day as it is. Most of the questions aren't so difficult to answer that you need a big long post. Polls just aid the lurking.

possible suggestion:
maybe the computer dudes in charge here should make it so that a poll does not get bumped unless it is actually written reply?
ps: its raining here.

I think they did already.
Poll idea: Is it raining? a. Yes. b. No. c. I can't tell. d. I don't like rain. e. What's rain? f. Yes. g. Boom chicka-boom (You may select as many answers as apply.)

I'm just not going to vote.

I see you're a Unidah, not a Dividah.
The only problem I have with polls is that they are bumped up and...
Done.
now I have no problem. Time to vote indifferent on the "Do you like rubber duckies?" poll.
