There are more owners of dogs than cats, but there are more cats owned than dogs.
The average cat owner has 2.3 cats.
Which is not unusual, considering how cats make people insane (see link from my post above).
Cats want to eat your brain.
Hahah. Nice!
I actually live down the street from a "cat lady". It's seriously quite sad. The village (or some agent thereof) had to come out and "fix" all the cats she let roam freely in and out of her house, around the neighborhood, etc -- so that the population wouldn't get any more out of control.
I'm a cat person, so on the one hand I love all the cats around (seriously, every day I can look out one window of my house and see at least one of her cats lurking about; frequently, more than one out more than one window) ... but on the other... I know this is not good for either the cats or the cat lady; it's sad, both are developing in a strange, warped co-dependence...

They're all vermin, filthy disease carriers.
The thread title reminds me of an interesting book by Clarence Day Junior called This Simian World. He hypothesised what the world would have been like if other animals other than primates had evolved the way humans did.
He drew some interesting conclusions, and took a few swipes at our underlying simian nature that would have been more contreversial in it's day.
I prefer cats, if I had to choose.

I had to fight a police trained german shepard once. Those fuckers get nasty.
I didn't try to stick around to see who would get a punctured vein first, I took my ass bite and hopped up a wall to get my dad, some stupid bastard insisted they were fine and you could walk past one (as the same dog bounded after someone's mom bringing her groceries back)
The dog paid the price for the dipshit owner
They got let out around 1996 in the evening and immediately went for a run on the B-road
even to the end the bastards had cornered a guy outside the taxi rank and were doing a v slpit manouevre to go for his balls. They both got nailed crossing the road trying to get him, smashed up rib cages, punctured lungs etc. shame really, could have been nice dogs in the right hands.
One more reason I raise an eyebrow when I see these chumps with very low grade bull dogs (I've owned staffs bulls) A pit Bull is a mutt and everytime one turns on the young relatives of the owners, that;s what the owner does, not the dog. Lots of POS owners in the UK think they're tough with a tough dog, its crazy, I've never seen it pay off - they either taze or run over the dog and then get what they wanted out of the owner.

I love dogs and have always been fond of their companionship. They do anything with you and aren't worried about getting dirty, wet or smelling bad.
Cats - meh. I've come across maybe 10 in my life that I truly liked. A memorable one came into my life about a decade ago. A newborn kitten which I was fond of because he was really rough and tumble and full of spirit. He'd keep scratching and swatting you if you tried to hold him down. I liked his attitude. So I took him as my own and named him Dexter:

I've never owned a cat, but I suspect I'm a cat person. Dogs bark all the time. You can't leave them home alone for long. You have to take them for walks, and heaven forbid you come across another dog when you do that, not to mention the poop bags you have to carry around.
I also find cats more interesting to watch. Cats are more interesting watch. A cat is mysterious. You never know what the fuck a cat's gonna do.

Completely, utterly agree. And you totally got me with the black lab. I had one growing up.
For the most part, though, I really don't understand the general obsession with pet ownership. I prefer dogs over cats, but frankly I don't want the responsibility of a pet for a long, long time. Same reason I don't want children for a long, long time. I do not agree with pets being inside the home unless due to extreme outdoor temperatures. I think I have developed a mild allergy to cats (or their dander) sometime in the last few years. When I was a kid I took care of a neighbor's cat every time they were out of town. I never had any kind of allergic reaction to it. Now if I touch a cat and then bring my hands anywhere near my face, my eyes are ruined for the rest of the day. Watery, red, itchy (VERY itchy). And if I enter a cat owner's home who doesn't clean very often, I don't even need to touch the cat...within 10-15 minutes my eyes are acting up and my sinuses get bad.
Bleh. Cats. My husband, on the other hand, absolutely adores cats and seems to have some odd connection with them (probably because they're independent creatures). He likes other animals, but swears cats are better.

out of cats and dogs, I like playing with dogs a lot more. They're fun to hang out with and such. But they are burdens to me more than anything. Particularly if they are even remotely loud. If they make any noise at all. I generally prefer cats because they don't require I do anything in particular. I'm sure that's been said in this thread already, but yeah. Laziness wins.
I've been training my cat to be a Spartan since he was a baby. He is now by far the coolest cat I've ever dealt with. He doesn't give a shit about anything. He hangs out outside all day and can get down from tall trees by himself. And he fucks bitches up. My hands are perpetually shredded just from playing nice with him. I tell people who bother me to taunt him in particular ways on purpose and laugh when he inflicts serious harm on them. I pity whatever asshole actually pisses him off.
since this thread looks to be full of pictures, here are some pictures I took of the first time he ever went out in the snow. Walked around not giving a fuck and ended up taking a dump in it within a span of maybe two minutes. I thought it was pretty cool.

Cats have fewer qualities I admire, so I guess I'm a dog person. We do have a dog, but it wasn't intentional...more of a "Sure, we'll look after him while you find a place to live..." kind of thing.

When I was younger a big German Sheppard jumped over his front gate and chased me and my grandma down the road. That actually traumatised me for some years. This was then re-enforced a few years on when I went to my mates house and his Doberman squeezed past him in the doorway and pinned me in the corner with it's nose up my bum.
I was then scared of any "attack" type dogs. However as I got braver I started to challenge these fears and found that dogs could actually be fun. Then I realised just how much they smell and moved over to cats.
Cats are more calculating that dogs...this is something I admire in them. Plus they are more picky about who they get friendly with...another quality I admire. Dogs will just do anything for a biscuit.

We have the most amazing cat in the world right now. Everyone loves him, even the dogs are smitten.
He is absurdly easy going. If he's asleep somewhere, you can just pick him up and plop him somewhere else, in some other seemingly uncomfortable position, and he'll fall back asleep.
His main hobby and life-goal is to murder and cuddle in equal amounts. He has killed 2 birds, 1 mouse, and 2 lizards (and these are just the ones we know about) in the last 2 month period. He brings them to the doorstep with absolute love, the finest gift he could imagine.
I've only seen him frustrated once. It was the first time he saw rain, and he followed us around, screaming cat obscenities, translated roughly to "YOU FUCKING IDIOTS BROKE THE SKY".
I woke up once, and he had his paws in my nostrils. I think he was keeping them warm.

Never trust cat people.
I have always preferred indoor/outdoor cats to strictly indoor. Somehow, they seem to be more satisfied and less neurotic (probably in part because they get to live out their evolutionary purpose by hunting small animals).
Sylvia is our first indoor cat and frankly, she sucks. I mean, it's not her fault, and it's not really because she's indoor- she came home from the shelter with a latent case of ringworm that took over her whole body within a week, so she lost most of her fur. We had to quarantine her in the spare bathroom and suit up to go in and pet her twice a day, during which time we also had to smear medicine all over her diseased skin. She hated that, and came to associate being picked up with being smeared. We had to bathe her twice a week (who bathes cats? really) which of course she also hated. So she missed important socialization and bonding time during her 2 months in the bathroom, and is extremely neurotic as a result. After the crazy cat-poisoning lady moved out of our neighborhood we decided to see if she'd go outside, but she won't. She doesn't have ringworm anymore but her skin and fur have never completely recovered. She goes through periods where she licks all the fur off of her back half, so she just looks creepy. What affection I do have for her is based on pity. God I sound like a raging bitch.

We had one for a while, named H---, who was a rescue from a basement, where he was kept for three years without care. Are you kidding? Cat's are probably the cleanest animals you can possibly have in your house. My cat will come into my room, jump on my bed, and rub himself against me as if to go "Oh hell yes check out how softttt I am" and then he'll jump down and go off to whatever it is he does all day.
Now the new little psycho dog my dad just got is annoying as fuck. Little thing just poops all over the place, runs around like a madman, and stands on his hind legs looking up at you like "OMG OMG OMG PET MEEEE IM AWESOMEEEE" I always tell the little guy to calm the fuck down and get away from me.
I'm a cat person. I love dogs but have always just had more connections with cats than dogs.

C.M. Coolidge was the first guy to paint dogs player poker, shooting pool, etc.:

Yes, I've noticed that most cat owners believe in that kind of delusional thinking. To be honest, I had a persian kitten in high school, and I bathed her every week, blow dried her silky white fur and sprayed her with baby oil cat perfume.
I like long haired cats, because they are mellow and don't scratch your furniture and jump on top of kitchen countertops after they've been scratching urine and feces in their kitty litter.

A friend of mine was in a drug rehab program while he was in jail. The counselors told him to get a pet or a houseplant, and if he could keep it alive for a year, then he'd be ready for a relationship.
He got a dog a few weeks after he got out of jail. A week or two later he tied it up in a parking lot while he went into a bar. When he came out, the dog was gone.

Definitely more of a cat person. However, I'm fine with most dogs.. most animals, really. I get along well with animals. You don't really have to speak to them, and if you do, it's at most a couple of words. The pure honesty of action goes a lot farther and is generally more appreciated. Sounds good to me. Cats are like the perfect INTP pet, though: Low maintenance, require little attention (and seem to know how to limit such time appropriately), funny as hell to watch at times, solitary. Not only that, but most even have a good bit of utility: killing small rodents and bugs.

I have 12 cats and 3 dogs. The dogs were dumped here (rural area) and cats, well I had one elderly cat, then neighbor moved leaving behind 3 young cats (four years ago). I got to feeding them and wondering what best to do with them. Well they turned out to ALL be pregnant females. So my small shack became a true 'cat house'. And they became my responsibility cause nobody going to drive out here to adopt a kitten. Now I am pretty attached to them. Did have 14 cats but the 19 year old cat died and a younger one went out roaming few years ago just before an ice storm and didnt make it back.
I like both cats and dogs but probably identify with cats more. Well most of time. Not so much fun when I have one of them jump off a shelf onto me when I'm asleep in bed. I would think the mattress would be more comfortable cat landing for both of us, but couple of the cats dont see it that way.

Labs are a garbage bin on four legs.
I quite like cats and when we were living in the bush ours killed a rat every other night, but it was still considered a pest and no-one was allowed to get another cat when we moved:
Captain James Cook and later whalers and sealers introduced cats (Felis catus), but these did not become common until the 1830s. In the 1870s, rabbit numbers were driving farmers from their land, so quantities of cats were released to control them.
Rat-catchers
Cats were carried on ships to control rats. When James Cook’s Resolution was tied to trees in Dusky Sound, Fiordland, in 1773, one of the cats ‘regularly took a walk in the woods every morning and made great havoc among the little birds, that were not aware of such an insidious enemy.’
The cats went into the bush, joining rats and stoats as predators. Soon after cats appeared on Little Barrier, Cuvier and Stephens islands, saddlebacks and other native birds disappeared. Introduced to forest-covered Herekopare Island, cats quickly extinguished parakeets, robins, fernbirds, brown creepers, snipe and a native bat.
Wild cats live high in the mountains and along the coast, as well as in bush, scrub, and on farmland. They feed mainly on young rabbits, rats and mice, but also on native birds, lizards and large insects such as wētā, cicadas and dragonflies. In mainland bush, birds make up some 15% of their diet but, with most native birds gone, they usually eat blackbirds, chaffinches, silvereyes and hedge sparrows.
It is difficult and expensive to rid the bush of cats. It took 128 people almost 400 days to remove 100 cats from Little Barrier Island. In some cases they can be seen as a lesser evil, as they prey on rats, which cause even more damage.

Dogs have a vocabulary of about 60 words; cats don't. I don't think they are as capable of manipulation as much as everyone likes to think.
Dogs are social creatures and fit into a "pack" structure, with (hopefully) you as the pack leader. Cats have no such structure and are much more difficult to train. The advantage of this is that they sleep for about 18 hours a day, don't tear the house/garden apart when bored and as long as you have food, are always pleased to see you.

Cats evolved with much greater intelligence in terms of self-sufficiency. Because dogs are pack animals, they had to rely on each other, and are thus more needy than cats.
This fact is why people see cats as being more intelligent; a cat will figure out how to do something, as opposed to the dog learning how to do something. Whether each is actually "smarter" is debatable, because although the feline ability to figure something out by itself is a clear indicator of intelligence, the ability to learn from one another(outside parent figures) is a rarity amongst animals. The main thing that separates us from monkeys and apes(intelligence wise) is that they don't learn from each other; if a monkey, for example, figures out that throwing a rock at a coconut causes it to fall, thus giving him food, the others, even by observing him, will not make the connection.

Cats pretty well take care of themselves though too.
Animals that need a lot of attention arent high on my list.

Cats rot your brain and make you crazy (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/09/magazine/09_10_catcoat.html?ex=1354856400&en=217ff0517c90a794&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink).
Here’s a little-known and slightly terrifying fact: According to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 60 million people in the United States are infected with a parasite that may migrate into their brains and alter their behavior in a way that — among other things — may leave them more likely to be eaten by cats. New research into this common parasite — Toxoplasma gondii — may offer clues to the phenomenon known to the unscientifically-minded as “crazy cat lady” syndrome.
More news about how cats try to kill you:
Cat owners eight times more likely to have MRSA in their homes (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/6224791/Cat-owners-eight-times-more-likely-to-have-MRSA-in-their-homes.html)
A study of homes by researchers at the Center for Hygiene and Health in Home and Community at Simmons College in Boston, found MRSA in nearly half of the 35 residences they sampled, mostly on wet surfaces like baths, sinks and tap handles.
The study concluded: “The presence of a cat in the home was found to be a strong predictor for the isolation of MRSA.”

Cats just do their own thing, demanding what they want when they want it without working for it, that is, utilitarian-style. I instinctively distrust both cat men and cat women.

Very true, but explain this... As a boy and teenager, I ALWAYS had a dog. We were truly best friends. There was Nacho, who got ran over in the highway. Yes, I cried. Then came Star, when my parents moved from NM to WV, they gave her away. Yes, I cried, and yelled, and generally threw a fit and rebelled for a while. Then came Chita, and yet another move. My parents gave her away when we moved from WV to AL... and yes, ditto. Then came Tony, who tore the little shit neighbor kids calf off, and got put down. I preferred that the dog live at the time. Didn't cry, I was too pissed to cry. Then came Shadow, who lived until I was well into my 20's, and died of old age. Very very very sad day. And yea, I did. A lot.
Cats? I had one that lasted my entire youth, she lived to be nearly 20 years old. Have had a couple more since then, but only two that I truly adore. One is a recent addition, a Siamese. She is super smart, super intelligent, plays fetch, and follows me around the house, much like a dog. Unlike a dog, though, she can take care of herself for the most part, and doesn't require daily walks, or large yards.
I say I am both :P

The big difference is that dogs are pack animals. They adopt a role and its responsibilities within a community, they know their place and they are loyal to that role. Cats just do their own thing, demanding what they want when they want it without working for it, that is, utilitarian-style. I instinctively distrust both cat men and cat women.
But, dog and cat people aren't dogs and cats; they are people who enjoy the company of those animals.
Dog people like dogs (loyal, unquestioning, obedient, highly trainable animals).
Cat people like cats (independent, less trainable animals).
Therefore, it can be presumed that dog people prefer a companion they can easily control, while cat people prefer a companion who is independent and doesn't "need" them so much.

Dog people like dogs (loyal, unquestioning, obedient, highly trainable animals).
So dog people have control issues? Cat people must be emotionless bastards.
My last cat wasnt really mine. It was a stray that someone abandoned when they moved. It was a young female Russian Blue. Still shaved from the "no more kittens" surgery.
The cat more or less adopted us. We werent its exclusive "owners" though as it tramped around the complex and would follow anyone into their apartment. We were its favorites though. It behaved a lot like a dog but ive seen cats weaned to early behave this way. They retain infantile behavior which makes them a bit more social. They just havent let go of the concept of "momma". They can be pretty loyal but at the same time, a cat can go feral. a dog really can't. A dog will generally die if dropped off away from people. Anyway, we didnt take the cat when we moved. We didnt own her. Noone did.
She would wait for me at my parking spot when I came home from work. Follow me into the house. She would walk with me to get the mail or anywhere else I went. Very vocal too. Sometimes she would be gone for days.
I think she was weaned early and thought of people in general as Momma. So she wasnt really like an adult cat or she would have behaved differently. She was a kitten in a cats body.
Our Chihussell terrier is like a baby. (Wife brought it home)
As far as pets go, ive had a lot of different ones. I have adored them all for what they were and didnt hate any for it not being like me or fit my idea of what a cat or dog, or whatever, should be. We try to impose our human-ness upon our pets and tend to dislike the ones who don't mirror that. Generally speaking of course.
Instead of cats vs dogs how about a more distinct division such as Reptiles vs. Mammals as pets. Or Insects vs. Birds. Ive had them all and appreciated what they offered.
Now i think wild things should be let be. No more exotics for me. I observe from a distance now.
I am very suspicious of people that dislike any animal. Particularly those who hate a certain animal while adoring others... Issues.

I don't like dogs because I can control them, but because they share the same enthusiasm for getting dirty, tussling and spontaneity that I do. That's my favorite quality about them: the genuine desire to adventure with me. Cats just sit on their fat fucking ass at home waiting for me open a tin of food like they're doing me a favor by being in my life.

Which method of throwing a cat, do you think would garner the greatest distance;
One handed tail swing, counter clock-wise full arc.
Two handed "olympic hammer" style tail swing.
two hands, one behind the head, one at the rump, overhead hurl.
The hooptie hoop
the flim-flam stomp flap
the bend-it-like-beckham free kick
I would say the overhead hurl.
I suspect tail involved methods would soon detach tail from body before enough centrifugal force could be generated for a truly competetive distance. I havent tried personally though.
The kick could yield some yardage too but skeletal yielding and the overall flexibility of the cat may hamper the impact.
I can't help but visualize the poor animals though. Ouch.
With Dwarfs its the underhand toss with a harness and handle. They land on soft mats.

I like dogs and cats too. :)
Dogs have that cute "I'm happy to be with you and happy that you want to pet and play with me" thing going. It's so cute.
Cats have that "I'm a sweet kitty and I want you to pet me and make me purr, but when I'm sleeping, please leave me alone" cuteness about them.
Some kitties can be really sweet though. Some will follow you around like a dog and demand lots of attention. I think it's cute and endearing, but some might find it annoying, I suppose.
Animals have such a relaxing nature about them.

But....why, for the love of God, must dogs be so pushy, smelly, and needy? If they could tone that down, I'd appreciate it.

:) Thats funny. True...but funny. I too wish they had a off button. I can say that the dog we have now seems to "know" when to not come near me. Perhaps vocal tone or pheromones. She isnt so bad in that respect as far as dogs go. Most have been as you described.

Most independent cats I've come across were simply not as well socialized as other cats, like my own. Each of the three of them have their own ridiculous personalities and can't get enough attention. Patches, my female Calico, obstinately seeks to be with me even when I've been ignoring her pleas at my door for twenty minutes. Her meows only grow louder and more upset until I start seeing her paw grabbing at the bottom of the door, stopping every so often for me to hear her little paws pacing a small circle with a huff. If she could kick the thing open, she would.
And if I'm ignoring her when she's near me, she'll claw at my butt and retreat immediately with a look on her face as if to say, "Well ... I told you!"

We have or had a few cats around here as well as my dog. The cats flash a look that says, "Hey, feed me or clean my box.". My dog looks at me with eyes that say, "What are we going to do next buddy"?
When I'm an a down mood, the cats flash me a look that says, "Hey, feed me or clean my box". My dog comes over and snuggles up to me.
When I'm sick as hell lying in bed, the cats walk on my head and then stare at me with a look that says, "Hey, feed me or clean my box." My dog hops up on my bed and lies next to me (and licks my hand if I let her).
Of course, I have an attachment to my dog; I found her when I was out of a job, alone and on the edge of being homeless. I think some INTPs can benefit from a dog's unquestioning acceptance.

I voted neither/indifferent because I love both animals greatly even though I lean a bit to the dog side of things. Cats are fun to watch and very cute but I lose interesting in playing with them much more quickly than dogs. On the other hand, I appreciate cats' independence - especially when I don't want to be bothered. Dogs take more actual care in general but a medium or large dog is overwhelmingly more useful than a cat in so many different areas.

your slightly weird in expressing stuff.
I prefer dogs on the whole but like cats.Dogs generally provide more interaction and make more statements.A dog is a very expressive creature to eat one is just sick in the head. Its like eating a lamb or pig but worse because they are expressing eye expressions.Pigs are very intelligent and lambs are intelligent & babies.
worst meat to eat : Probably Lamb
I have eaten both lamb & meat but the worlds favourite pet would simply not go down.If society is constantly trying to tell you something is ok then mistakes can be made. And boy does society tell you its ok to eat a pig.

Are you a timid person (aka cat) or are you an aggressive person (aka dog)?
I like pretty fluffy, high maintenance, long haired cats who need to be groomed daily and bathed twice a week.
I also like cute, small, high maintenance dogs who need to be groomed daily and bathed twice a week that I can also take with me everywhere, and people keep commenting on how absolutely adorable she is.
A friend of mine said this to me once as an observation, but people who have high maintenance pets tend to have a high tolerance for dealing with difficult people.

Even in case of female cats?

I just want to say again that would if I could feed each and every dog on earth into a woodchipper while dog owners sat strapped to chairs in the splatter zone. Yes, I would if I could spend the entirety of my life seeing this done.
Puppies, old yellers -- I don't give a damn. Wipe out the whole species. Any dog owners put up a fight.... into the woodchipper with them, too.

For many of the same reasons people love dogs. As in: nothing whatsoever valid; subjective fliff-fluff. But while they get to have dogs and everyone's ok with that, I think I should get to feed them into woodchippers and everyone can either deal with it or get in line.
Cats are clearly better, anyhow.

Cats are animated throw pillows.
One rescue dog = all cats ever.

Anyone who needs to be rescued by a dog.... nevermind.
But yes, cats can be animated throw pillows.

...is buried under tons of rubble?
Better than being pulled up by "man's best friend".
Tell ya what. The dog that pulls me out of the rubble can go last in line into the woodchipper.
After all the dogs are gone, we'll all just stay clear of rubble piles.
And pet our cats.
