this is going to sound like an absolutely stupid question, however, my roomate is already sleeping so i can't ask him, and if i don't figure it out i'm just going to keep thinking about it. How would i go about shrinking an avatar (.jpg) image to fit into the required 120x120 pixels?

so maybe try irc :D
see if there are people who can help you.
now about the computer illiterate state. (m)irc is not so hard. comes with a nice guide to get you going.
hmm anything else would need more program knowledge. theres free image editor programs. and image vieuwers that are able to scale an image.

Download Irfanview, or use whichever picture-editor you already have or prefer. Load the image, select the resizing tool and alter it to the maximum allowed ( Here, 'The maximum size of your custom image is 120 by 120 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller)' ).

Save --- unless you wish to experiment with the other tools to enhance the image --- under another name, and use.

If the size is too much, try saving in different formats.

If you don't have any imaging editing software, and are running Windows...

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Over on the right side is a link to "Image Resizer." Click it and get it downloaded and installed.

After you download and install it, browse to the file you want to resize. Then right-click it, select "Resize Pictures" the click the "Advanced" button. You can highlight "Custom" and input the 120x120 values. The program will make a copy of the file for you, which you can then rename and upload.
