Is it really that difficult to have working DNS?
(the answer is no)

Yeah, but it takes work damn it.

My ass. I could set up DNS with my hosting company for intpc in a couple minutes, and Heero or whatever could take a couple minutes to point the domain at my name servers, and things would be problem-free from here on out. The problem would simply disappear, just like that.
I have a feeling it's an insistence on DIY that is the culprit here. And yes, THAT does take work. Which is stupid, when it means subjecting the forum patrons to this sad level of service.

So, whot have you been doing about it then? I mean other than whining . I thawt you were supposed to have fixed it (whotever it is). I'm sure it's important to me. So, let's get to it, no more procrastinating. [slacker]

I outlined what I could do above, and I would do it. That hosting account costs me about $15 a month and I am allowed 5 domains (I think), but I don't need them all, so I would gladly give up one for a reliable intpc.
I am a tech admin, sure, but the only thing I currently have access to is the filesystem via ftp. Which is not helpful in this situation at all.

Look at Hustler and Dr. Haight cavalierly dismiss any serious suggestion made towards them - how unusual!

Hey, what are your five domains right now? And what functionality of the DNS are we missing out on that we really should have? What isn't working?

Just my personal site, http://incise.org , and another project that shall remain undisclosed.
The only functionality currently missing is reliability! The lack of it could be caused by almost anything. But it's been going on intermittently for a long time, which is ridiculous. It is not a difficult task.

I didn't think that had anything to do with DNS. I thought it stemmed from server issues and from MySQL problems. The intermittent unreliability over the years, I mean. But, if you think you can solve some major problem, I guess you could take it up with fc in a PM and/or look for Heero in IRC. As far as I know, he's never on the forum, but he's on IRC quite a lot.

They are separate problems. When the browser says something like "can't find the server at forums.intpcentral.com", it means dns is down. (I checked it out further, and it was)
If it says can't connect, or connection was lost, or something like that, then it can find the server, but the server isn't responding.

I know, but here's the thing. I wrote that post before you came back and explained it, not that I know whot that means. But it's very cool to me that you guys know whot you're talking about.
I have only been tutoring this summer, so no one to say.. 'that was your job, get to it, no slacking..' to, as in more a classroom thing. Bear with me, I was joking around and it wasn't a true response post. I really din't understand it was 'a simple matter'. Mostly I was pokiing fun at my own cluelessness.
nevermind. I cease to amuse myself.

OH, thank you. Yeah, that was a nuisance . Now I know what it means. The server thingy, I think.

I knew it was only a matter of time until someone brought that up.
My offer is merely one example of the easy availability of free solutions to this problem. The problem has nothing to do with money. There is no reason the site can't have reliable DNS. Nearly every website does.

No, but it does take someone's time and effort and they are not being compensated for it. IOW, they are doing us a favor. Seems like it's no more than common courtesy to phrase requests in a civil if not polite tone, but that's probably just my overactive Fe at work.

But the thing is, they're not the only ones capable of/willing to do what they're doing. But we're locked in.
And these issues have been brought up before, which is why I am being a jerk about it. To me it seems irresponsible to take on the responsibility of hosting a community and then a) never visit it and make yourself generally unseen and b) neglectfully administrate it.
It's hard to complain about free, but I think enough people have a vested interest in intpc that we don't have to act like we're desperate, and we shouldn't have to deal with unreliable service.

We could offer to pay a small membership fee. Maybe that would help free up some time for them to work on it.
