Guardian Central, the bank where I work, has now cut off our access to all outside instant messengers and outside email. Their rationale is that they want to be able to monitor all our communications, which they are unable to do for those mediums. Now my entire software developers network is cut off. Answers I could once get in a matter of minutes now take hours. Of course, the Guardians running this place will not bend. These are the same people who dictate which restrooms you can and cannot use. Anybody else out there run into a similar situation? I'm seriously considering looking for employment elsewhere.

Tell them how less efficient and cost effective the place has become. Give them numbers!

Tell them how less efficient and cost effective the place has become. Give them numbers! Believe me ... that was the first thing I did ... complete with calculations of how much 5 minutes of asking questions on the network cost vs. 5 hours of hunting things down. I extrapolated that out to an annual cost of only several hundred dollars with IM, versus tens of thousands without.

Result: I was ignored.

So I guess my real choices are do I want to go on a crusade, piss off the Guardians (who will feel their authority challenged), and be in the next round of layoffs ... or quietly start looking for something else ... or suck it up. Sometimes it sucks being a coprorate whore.

Quietly look for something better while storing up on lubricant.
