Any interest in scheduling a meet-up this summer for the southeast?

Depends on where it is. I'm only willing to drive as far as Miami or Tampa! :P

Cool. Naturally I'd like it to be in the NC Triangle, but maybe Atlanta is closer for more people. So how about some votes --
A) Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, NC
B) Atlanta, GA
C) Tampa, FL
D) Other
Maybe we could plot everyone's coordinates on a map and pick the "center of gravity," so to speak. That might put us in the middle of the woods, though.

I'm voting A. That way, if you guys turn out to suck IRL, I can just go home.

Not that this'll happen, but C would kick ass. :)

B. Just to be contrary.
But yes, sounds good. However, I can't help but wonder, will it ever happen!?

I'm voting B, because it's closer and there's a lot more fun stuff to do there.

Anyone in for a group canoe or kayak trip somewhere that rents canoes, or even tubing down the chatahoochie in Helen, GA? Or maybe meet in Dolly Partons theme park or the blue ridge mountains in Tennessee? Or, Key West perhaps?
Whats along the Amtrak route? I'm not sure I'd seriously be able to do this, so Im probably just 'supposing' and not really doing. So continue on.

I am nervous about a GTG. What if I did show up and someone expected me to lick their bum hole?

E. Pigeon Forge, Tennessee
Home of Dollywood and The Great Park. Good suggestion, Birdsnest.
I'm 20 minutes away. Surely I could make a meet-up this close to home.

That only happened once, and all parties were compensated appropriately.

I am a kayaker and a raft guide, and can take five or six people down one of several rivers in NC/TN, if you like, completely free of charge. Some of the ones I'm most familiar with are only 2-3 hours from Atlanta.

Dollywood I'd rather go to Six Flags. ;(
We could go to Stone Mountain and watch the laser show too. :(

Sounds like a great thing. How much to rent the canoes, and what time of year is the best time, and what sort of lodging is available, or is it camping? I've got a 6 person tent. A variety of places along the way, so that different people can attend different things as they chose.
Starting in NC, and ending up in Key West, weekends or Saturdays only, and that way, people can chose to meet or not at their desired places. For instance, July 28th: NC or SC, August 4: Tennessee, August 12: Atlanta, August 19: Orlando August 26th: Key West.

Oh, Pigeon Forge has laser shows! Tacky tourist attractions abound.
And Dollywood is cleaner than Six Flags. :P
But really, what's with all this talk of activity? I just want to sit and drink. In which case maybe Atlanta would be best. Or even Knoxville. FWIW, Knoxville has a higher number of restaurants per capita than any other city.

If you go in my stepfather's raft, it's completely free. I suggest the Ocoee (http://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River_detail_id_1780_), which runs pretty much every day in the summer. I'd prefer to camp, since it's so warm.

I'm up for sitting and drinking. In Raleigh.

Six Flags has bigger, better, and more roller coasters.
But sitting and drinking sounds nice too, as long as we're drinking in the Atlanta area. ;)

Ya'll need to suggest some venues and dates. Post links.
I looked at the website Rhinosaur and it looks great, but probably need something a little tamer than whitewater?

How about a "I would come to a meet-up in ___" poll where we could choose all the cities we'd come to, then schedule the meet-up for the one that gets the most hits. If someone could make that, that would be great, b/c I'm too lazy/stupid/busy right now. Personally, I'd come to Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte, Myrtle Beach, or almost anywhere else in NC or SC, but probably not Atlanta or Florida.

Where would you be willing to meet?

Key West would be a horrible place to meet. The drive...god...US-1 sucks!
I'd vote, but chances are I wouldn't show up, even if it was in Florida. The drive from Naples (where I live) to Orlando is 5 hours! So go with something farther north. ;)

I know someone in Wilmington NC who has been pissing me off via long-distance for a full month and a half. We should have a meet up in that town so I can tell him I was there when I get back.

Ok, I just read more of the other thread. Rafting/canoeing intrigues me. I might be willing to travel for some excitement. No offense, but driving 10 hours (or paying for a plane ticket) to hang out and drink, that's difficult for me to justify.

If it's in Chattanooga, Asheville, or Atlanta, I would be willing to take a party down a river the day after the meet-up. Vote for those.

Okay, right now it appears that Raleigh / Durham / Chapel Hill is winning. Anyone know of any good bars in the area, or would you rather meet at someone's house or apartment?
And if a mod could merge the two threads I'd appreciate it.

I vote for any bar along Glenwood South. Are we going to pick a date?

Yes.
Chapel Hill has some good places. I like the Dead Mule on Franklin. They have a great big patio. Flying Burrito, counterintuitively, is a good place to go for drinks. The West End Wine Bar and the East End Martini Bar are also fine. I know the folks who run the Carolina Brewery so we can't go there.
Don't get out to Raleigh much so I'm not familiar with what's there.

The local 506 was a cool place but it's the only place in Chapel Hill I've been to. Well I take that back, I've been to some other places; generic bars that I don't really remember.
Raleigh has the Flying Saucer. I've never been there, but I've heard it's good.

I recommend the Hibernian on Glenwood. It's a faux-Irish pub. It has a good selection of drinks, decent food, and is big enough that you can't miss it. And there's plenty of other bars and restaurants within walking distance, so if it gets too crowded or we don't like it for some reason, we can just go somewhere else.

Oh, is that near the giant acorn? I think I've been there actually. It is nice. Plenty of room, not too noisy (although I think it was a weeknight when we went).

I think Ivy was thinking of Tir Na Nog, which is across the street from Moore Square Park. Tir Na Nog is a little more open than Hibernian, and nicer inside and has better food, too. But Tir Na Nog will be really crowded if we do this on a Saturday, and I'm assuming we will. They have free concerts in Moore Square every other Saturday, and on the off Saturdays, they have free movies in the square. The place gets packed, and the bathroom line is a mile long.
Yikes, that would be too much of a crowd for sure.
I'm sure I can find the Hibernian. Or we could find a more out-of-the-way spot, like one of those biker bars on 54 at White Cross. ;)

Raleigh is hosting a big party tomorrow (7/21) on Fayetteville St. called Raleigh Wide Open (http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?section=triangle&id=5443178). I'll probably go for an hour or two with my roommate. Let me know if you want to meet up.
The Hibernian sounds fine. I rode my bike past it today and it looks really nice. Now we just have to pick a date.
