How about a sticky thread (somewhere) for posting where you might be going just in case anyone else would like to meet and hang out, see the sights, etc. I like traveling and don't mind doing it alone, but I thought it sounded like a neat idea to meanwhile meet other INTP's. I know, we struggle with IM's, so maybe it's a stretch, but it's been brought up before that we all meet at an INTP party and such.
I'm planning a trip in May over in France, Italy, and the Isle of Man. It would be cool to post the agenda and see if anyone else was interested.

Great idea! I'm interested in a trip to Vietnam this year and would (for example) be interested in hearing from anyone else who's been there. A thread for travel tips/ideas/suggestions would be wonderful.

Spain at Easter, Scotland or Scandinavia (bit of an 'S' theme this year) in the Summer and in the Autumn Toronto->Halifax with a detour around New England.
Yay.

*laughing that someone finally made this thread*
I did think Geoff would be the one to start it. DID anyone miss noticing that he loves to travel ? *only the people saying, "Who's Geoff?" raised their hands*
I think songbird34's suggestion to broaden it into :
travel tips/ideas/suggestions is a great idea - to include those of us who would like others' views without necessarily sharing any part of the travel with them...
edit : happy trails, all of you.

I travel to Vietnam regularly, since my wife is Vietnamese. It's a beautiful place and there is a lot to see and experience there. In the north, Hanoi is an interesting city and Ha Long Bay is not to be missed, a world heritage site with extraordinary caverns in the small islands that dot the bay by the hundreds. Take a 5 mega pixel digital camera and a tripod, set it on night mode and you'll have some awesome pictures of the caves. I haven't been to the northern moutainous regions or Sapa, but that's on my list.
In the central part, the most pictureseque area, there are several interesting places; Hue, Da Nang, and Hoi An are all worth visiting. Hoi An looks like a small european village (old French architecture). This area features many art galleries, paintings, pottery, carvings and such, many of exceptional quality. Also, there's the five marble moutains, each with a different color of marble, and numerous sculpture shops that produce very nice stone work. Unfortunately, the mountains are diminishing in size due to the marble trade. There is also an ancient Champa ruin (also a world heritage site) in the central mountains (I had to cross a ravine over a bamboo foot bridge to get there, but I think they made some improvements since then). The Champa people were a tiny but fierce race (about 3 to 4 feet tall) that dominated the region at one time... very interesting. The trips up the rivers in small boats were unforgettable. And bicycle tours are very pleasant too (just don't expect a recent vintage bicycle).
In Dalat and a few other places they do silk embroidery that is unlike anything I've ever seen. There are canvases that require months or even years of labor and are stunningly artful. There's a quaint embroidery village in Dalat (no pictures allowed) that you can visit... it's like an artist colony with gardens and areas for meditation. They play live traditional music and the food is wonderful. It's a nice place to spend an afternoon. They have retail shops with the silk embroidery in the major cities too.
In the southern areas, Na Trang is a seaside resort area, warm and pleasant. Ho Chi Minh City is the crowded, noisy center of commerce. My favorite hotel there is the Caravelle. There is a cafe on the main floor that looks out on pretty setting where wedding parties come for pictures. On a nice day, there are processions of beautiful brides and their attendants, some in traditional dress some in western style.
The food is great, the people are warm and friendly, and I always felt safe, never threatened (a nice feeling for an American overseas these days).
I took my dad for a visit there last October (he kept reminding me that the last time he was there, they were shooting at him). One evening we had dinner with a North Vietnamese man and it turned into quite a ceremonial event, with toasts of lobster blood mixed with rice wine to the future good relations of our countries, health, happiness, etc. It was an amazing thing to see, former enemies feasting together and genuinely enjoying it -- it makes one wonder. It was a great trip, he loved it and he's now hooked on Vietnamese coffee -- he won't drink anything else and he's telling all his friends... I think I may have to start importing it.

My wife is Thai and we travel to Thailand every couple of years. We've pretty much been everywhere in Thailand over the past 15 years, so if anyone has questions about visiting Thailand drop me a line.
I'm thinking of going to Philadelphia in June for a conference. I might post something closer to the date for any ideas about things to do there. I love driving in the USA. (the fastest car in the world is a rented car!)
About this time last year I went from the middle of the Australian summer to Cananda for about a week (mostly Calgary). I found a new love - driving rented cars in the snow. whheeeee!

How much is that US or Sterling? I am too lazy to find a currency converter ;)
I am currently exploring the cuisine of Vietnam/Cambodia etc as a slight variety from the other parts of the Far East I am familiar with. I am jealous of the eating out opportunities, at least!
Something a bit different, anyway (at least it would be to me).
I like to stay in a different place every night, plan my own trip using a Lonely Planet or similar for the country and be largely freeform on what we do. Fortunately I am brought down to earth by my ISFJ wife, who at least books some accommodation and measures on the map to see if we have 300 miles or 3000 miles to drive in a day ;-).
My favourite road trip so far (and I have done quite a few) was Seattle up to Vancouver, a jaunt around Whistler and the Rockies... down the West Coast to California, taking in various National Parks (Yosemite, Redwood, Lassen Peak Volcanic).
It was a fun 3 weeks.

I set off on my first solo backpacking trip through Malaysia and Thailand about 15 yrs ago armed with a yellow Lonely Planet Guide. I remember being in a small fishing village on the east coast of Malaysia thinking how good was this, 'venturing into the unknown' all by myself. I got to a bus station and there were about 6 groups of backpackers, all carrying the same yellow Lonely Planet guide, all venturing into the unknown. Those bloody guides were everywhere, but useful nonetheless.

I agree, Lonely Planet is the best. I've still got my original yellow 'South East Asia on a Shoestring' guide on my bookshelf as well as some more modern ones. I can't really use my yellow one anymore because its the 1989 edition.
BTW The Lonely Planet company is based in Melbourne, I used to drive past it every day. Melbourne must have a thing about planets. There also the "Daily Planet", which is Melbourne's biggest whorehouse and is actually a listed company on the Australian Stock Exchange.

Orlando in April. Dallas in June perhaps.
I also read and post at the lonelyplanet thorn three. There are a few really bossy types there though. I've learned that I want to camp in the adirondacks and get a canoe for the top of my car to take up there. Also, that the Southwestern desert is someplace I'd like to try camping in Spring when pipe organ cactus blooms. I'd love to get some photos of colourful cactus blooms. Oh, and all of the major US State parks, like Yosemite, Yellowstone, I'd love to take amtrak around states and backpack in those parks for a summer.
Idea: Hey, if any of you like camping and want to create a campout slumber party under the stars in a major US State Park, suggest a date, a park. Something like Adirondacks, Campsite ____, June 23-25 for example.
For me, I can do one in Orlando, at Disneys Fort Wilderness campground, (one of US's best campsites believe it or not), has canoeing, fishing, pools, and Disney world next door.
Did Yellowstone and Yosemite in the last couple of years. Yellowstone definitely has the edge, and the one just south, Grand Teton is just gorgeous.
I do fairly well for a Brit to see so many NA National Parks. Mainly I just love the Rockies..

Crule 81,
I can only suggest to go to the airport website and find a shuttle company used by the airport, and call and reserve the shuttle pickup & dropoff ahead by using one of their drop off spots. In Dallas this is a necessity, it costs over $50 to take a taxi to town, and the shuttle is about 15-17, much cheaper. They usually can take you where you specify, but if not, ask which major hotels are near you that they use, and even if you don't actually stay at the hotel, you can walk to the hotel yourself and ask them to pick you up there.
Shuttles are almost always the cheapest way to go. Taxis are next, but can be a lot more.

Yes. When I was there, I had trouble figuring out what to do myself. But they were undoubtedly the four best years of my life so I found things to do.
If the weather is nice, you can go to Taughannak falls, which is on the west side of Cayuga Lake a few miles north of Ithaca. Here's the website: http://www.taughannock.com/
There are many wineries in the finger lakes regions. I don't like wine so I can't recommend any one of them.
The art museum on campus isn't too bad. Walking around campus is interesting because it is very beautiful. The women's rights thing is up in Seneca Falls, about an hour north of Ithaca. I never went there. I think Mark Twain in buried in Elmira, forty-five minutes southwest. If you want to drive a bit farther, go to the Corning glass museum in Corning, also to the southwest.
If you have any other questions about the area, feel free to PM me.

Thanks for the ideas. I definitely want to have a gameplan for myself so my daughter can jump into the visit & not look back without any thoughts of me. She's thrilled and I couldn't be happier for her. I am hoping for good weather, if it is nasty I'll probably curl up with a book. The only wine I like is zinfandel - I've never been to a winery & I enjoy seeing/learning manufacturing & agricultural production processes. The campus is beautiful & I look forward to exploring it <sigh> alone (I miss her already). I will check out the art museum & library (I assume there is a massive library). We were there last October, but had to curtail a lot of our activities b/c of the driving rain and cold! I did hit the farmer's market during that visit - somehow I got the feeling that the "hemp" industry is big in the fingerlakes region.

There have been some complications, as the friend who lives in Phoenix might be moving to Denver. I might go a more Northerly route instead. But on the other hand, there is that Western mystique, and if I could find a place to rest for a day or two, I think I'd still prefer my original plans, coz four days straight on a bus is uncool.

I used to Go Greyhound all the time. At least twice a month for a few years.
My experience is they won't skip meal stops. Be prepared to sit next to the weirdest fucking people you've ever met. It would be a good idea to bring a CD player with lots of batteries or a book (or three books and a tazer). People will take your seat if you leave on meal break and they will fight you for it. When you change busses fucking RUN to the next bus so you can get a good seat and hopefully next to a semi-normal person.
It once took me twelve hours on Greyhound to 250 miles. We went through four fucking states (like a big O)!
Man I miss Greyhound. I once sat next to a lady who had a garbage bag full of tuna fish sandwiches, that was an interesting six hours.

I think I might fly there so I can catch my train. It's either that or leave in the evening, arrive the next morning, pushing my plans back a day.
I'm actually kind of sad about missing the bus ride. Long. Uncomfortable. Crazy. Fun!
And it'll be right after the next Harry Potter comes out, so... Yeah I'll be one of those lunatics, making strange noises and talking out loud (to the book).

I have traveled on Amtrak, and I seem to remember that they board something like 20-30 minutes before departure time. But it's been a long time, so that could be off. I'm not sure how late before departure they'll allow someone on the train.

I'm in St. Anthony, Newfoundland, right now. It's at the northern tip of the island. I'm going to see the Viking ruins today and then we begin the long trip home. I got my first speeding ticket for 34 km over in Ontario, but the fine comes out to only about $110 American and it won't go on my record in Michigan. See y'all in a week or so.

We visited Russia twice 3 years ago when we adopted our kids. It was an amazing experience. Moscow, St Petersburg and Novosibursk (Siberia).
Just wondered if anyone else has been there and how they found it?
I've only spent a week in Moscow, but I suppose that counts.......maybe? I went in March a couple of years ago and stayed with American friends there.
Anyway, I found certain aspects just amazing--some of the architecture, the Kremlin, the insides of the churches, Lenin's preservation (yikes!). I don't think that Moscow is a beautiful city, but I was nonetheless fascinated--by the culture, by how things have changed (or not) since communism, by the history.
My regrets: I wish that I had been there in nice weather (I have the impression that everything is grey).......I wish that I had seen more art (or ballet)..........and I wish that I had gotten a better feel for the culture. But I definitely hope to go back someday, with a detour to St. Petersburg. :)

It's not 100% yet, but I may visit the USA in october/november with family. Visiting old friends, currently living in Pennsylvania, I think. The bad thing is, I'll have to babysit my parents (they don't speak english), the good thing is, I'll probably have some time to myself in NY which we'll definitely visit a couple of times. Anyone there, know some good spots? (apart from the obvious tourist traps)
I'll go to the embassy next wednesday for the visa interview, hope they don't screw me with these new paranoid policies. I'll post whether it fell through or not.
(Off topic but kind of relevant: the last time I was there, I visited the WTC towers exactly 1 year, 1 month and 1 day before the incident. Creepy.)

In New Mexico you might want to check out the area where the Red River gorge meets the Rio Grande gorge called "the Confluence". I forget the name of the town its near. In upper Northwest New Mexico. The "Dunes" park in SE New Meixico was OK. There was some kind of an excursion you could take too, where you ride through the mountains on a little train. It's a tiny little "toot toot" train, built as though for children, and this is why it feels so odd and exhilirating. ( Just kidding. It's a regular train. )
Before I get started on how incredible the "four corners" area is, I would need to know how much time you're spending there, or if you will be near that area. There's a wealth of info on that. Briefly , I loved "Canyonlands National Park" and plan to go back again some day. Its right near Arches National Park and other things. There's a little town you go to in order to stock up etc. They have an inexpensive youth hostel.

I might post a few questions on New Mexico later... would love to visit four corners someday as I have not been back to Arizona since the late 80s... will be in SF bay area in 2 weeks, Vegas in May and Mexico in Nov.
I have to say, if anyone gets the chance, a trip to the western bahamas should be sketched into the dayplanner.. I got to visit St Thomas, Half Moon Cay and Nassau last yr... fantastic
A cool place to check out is Fort Fincastle and the Queens Staircase in Nassau... besides, the incredible private resorts near the ship ports are unbelieveable...
Interested in wine tours also. Any recommendations?

What made me weep - quite literally - was my visit to the island and Roatan.. in the Western med... decrepit conditions, homes with no roof, people begging and selling trinkets for food, heck the dogs even looked hungry
Belize and Cozemel were modernized but **whoa** I think a visit to Roatan would be beneficial to most Americans or anyone else complaining about survival.. opportunities are minimal there
Eastern med much more fully developed...
Hope you can catch a hop there someday

If you haven't already left, Georgetown is kind of a tourist attraction in itself, mainly for the main shopping streets, M St., and Wisconson Ave., and the nice old brownstones in the neighborhood. Check out the harbor there, it's right off M St. It's nice weather right now so lots of people will be out eating and drinking by the harbor or out on their boats. There's also lots of restaurants, bars/clubs all over Georgetown. If you liked The Exorcist, I heard the creepy stairs in the movie is located in Georgetown but I have no idea how to get there. Anyway hope you have fun!

Thinking of going to China in October. Would not plan to arrive until the 5th at the earliest, just to avoid most of the national holiday week. I was thinking about 10 days to two weeks. I was talking to someone from China who thought that might be a bit long for a tour. I want to go to Beijing, Xi'an, hit the Yangtze River and probably Shanghai. Suggestions?
I don't know, do I really need to spend much (any?) time in Shanghai? That's probably where I'll end up if I see the Yangtze at all, huh? How much time do I really need to spend in Beijing? Where should I spend my money? By that I mean, for example, would I be hating life if I got a 3 star hotel as opposed to a four or five? Go with one where most meals are provided or not? Those types of things.
What should I look for in a tour itself? There are tons of sites online. Can't begin to narrow it down. How much is price a reflection of quality?
I also thought about doing a mission trip. Anyone done one of those? Even worked with Red Cross or Doctors w/out Borders kind of thing.
Any thoughts helpful. Thanks!

I haven't been to China, but I'd want at least 4-5 weeks minimum for an adventure of this magnitude (I'd want more, but since I have a full time job longer than this isn't realistic). ScottDepends on the country you are visiting (and possibly on your country of residence as well). Americans and Canadians need a visa to visit mainland China. It looks like a basic tourist visa is good for up to 60 days.

I have never been on one of these pre-arranged tour packages you appear to be planning. I don't think attendance is mandatory, however, I'm sure you can just do your own thing for the day and skip the planned itinerary if you're tired. Of course, you may feel guilty about paying good money for things you miss out on. Just remember job #1 is to have fun so go with whatever works best.

This is just to gawk at the prices of hotels in Miami, FL in Winter!
I thought, hmm, with this cold weather, it would be so nice to get on Amtrak, and go down to Miami for a weekend. Well, the superbowl will be down there, and you should see the hotel prices, they are nuts! (Feb 2 & 3).
Super Bowl XLI will be held in South Florida on Sunday, February 4, 2007. Availability of accommodations and services may be limited February 1 through February 5. Plan ahead and check for traffic delays during this time.
http://www.superbowl.com/
I did a search on another weekend, and the prices are still crazy. $700 for a room? I had no idea Miami was so expensive. I have opted for Orlando instead.
Well, I am guessing the roads in Florida for the next week or so will be very crowded if the superbowl is there. Might just want to avoid it and stay home.

Hi Prozac,
I never saw this thread till just now. I love your pictures!
I ended up staying home, but I'm glad I did because that was the weekend that Orlando had 3 tornados rip through, so it wouldn't have been a good time to travel at all in Florida. I guess April might be a better month for Florida.
Anyway, I liked the ocean pic with the rock formations, and the one with you on the deck, you look friendly, so I will wave back.

I always liked this thread, I wish it was used more.
Taking a little trip to Yemen at the end of the month. I only have about 5 days so I have to prioritize a little. Sana'a is definitely the highlight from the sounds of it but as far as day trips/side trips go there seem to be a lot of possibilities. If anyone out there has been before let me know if there's anything I "can't miss" in or out of Sana'a.
The return ticket from Sharjah (near Dubai) to Sana'a was an awesome 750dhs ($200). Short flight but still cheap for an international ticket.

I have been to Yemen a few times. If you are meeting people you know and trust you could drive up to Taiz through the mountains. You need to go armed though and hide yourself in some areas else you could get shot at or taken hostage.
The area in the South West that gets rain is semi-tropical, so if you go there take some anti-malarials. There are about 3m Mango trees in that area, and eaten off the tree they are delicious.
If I get chance I will upload some pictures later. If you stay in Sanna then you need to visit the old spice market. The various varieties of raisins are very good, again though be careful. Westerners do not frequent this area and you could get into trouble. There is still a hole in the wall from when the Marxists turned up when the Brits left and blasted their way into the old city, which still remained loacked at night until the 1960s.
Check out the mud buildings in the old town as well before they get replaced by ugly concrete blocks.
Oh and make sure your visa is in order, I got arrested at the airport last time I went and had to have someone bribe me out.
Edit:
If you have the opportunity to go to Aden it is very nice, and totaly different from the rest of the country owing to the British influence. You can drink there for a start. The fish restaurants in Crator near the harbor are good, even if the hygene does not look first rate I have never had food poisining from them (yet).
If you want a beer outside of Aden try the Dutch Embassy.

Excellent, thank you muchly.
I doubt I'll be able to make it to Taiz but I'll see about Aden. As far as visas go I think I'm ok. I spoke to the consulate and in Dubai and they said Canadians can buy them on arrival. What was the trouble you had? I read something about needing exit visas somewhere but I can't remember now. Have to take a look again. . .
OK some pics, I have reduced the resolution down so I can upload them.
The first picture is of some qat farmers. Notice the large sharp knife, dont aggravate them they usualy pack an AK47 as well. Most people in Yemen chew this stuff habitualy, I have been working to reduce pesticide use on it which is reckless and a cause of high rates of mouth cancer.
Second picture is a qat field. Do not walk towards these from the road uninvited, the tower is a guntower and they will protect their crop. This is in the South where they crop low, the first picture is the north where they crop high.
The third is Taiz in the North of Yemen, if there were any logic this would be the capital rather than Sanna, but the cheiftans in Sanna have more weopons and money. The hotels in Taiz are much better, and it a lot safer.
The fourth is one taken at pumpkin harvest time. This is a typical roadside shop.
The final picture is the mountains to the North of Sanna. They are desolate and very beautiful, they are controlled by tribal warlords that have a penchant for kidnapping foreigners to get things like roads built. These days though they may sell you on to foreign terrorists so be careful.
I will post some more later.

Israeli stamp. The embassy gave me a visa with it in there, but pasport control in Sanna did not like it and put me in a cell.
I have another couple of pasports without an Israeli stamp, but could not send either of them for the visa as one was at the Syrian embassy awaiting a visa there and the other is the nice clean one I use just for the USA so as to avoid hassle at border control.

I've traveled to some places considered somewhat dangerous, but never anywhere which could be said to have "tribal warlords". Do you purchase kidnapping insurance before going to Yemen? I've heard stories about people traveling there, and they say kidnapping is a greater likelihood in that country, but that usually the kidnappers are not so awful to their victims as in places like Colombia. Are the foreign terrorists a different story?

Ah, that is a pain in the ass. I haven't been able to travel to Israel because of that very problem. I've heard that you can get them to stamp a piece of paper instead but I didn't think it was worth the risk.

Yemen isn't really that bad. There are a few hot-spots where there have been a lot of kidnappings but for the most part the country is meant to be incredibly friendly and safe. You still have a away higher chance of being shot while traveling in the US than Yemen.

Not according to Robert Young Pelton. Yemen is one of the poorer countries in the world, and badly governed. He says, to sum it up, Yemen is pretty safe if you don't leave the big cities and stay out of the tribal regions in the south. He describes the violence in Yemen as usually sporadic, and probably not going to involve a casual tourist unless they were doing something risky and probably avoidable. By comparison, he rates the U.S. enormously safer. To get yourself shot in the U.S. you'd probably have to be doing something outlandishly idiotic.

So you're traveling to Yemen? I guess tour companies, though I dislike them too, can help you see the most interesting sights of a place, that you might had difficulty in discovering by yourself.
I was trying to plan a travel for my next week off, in April, but I am overwhelmed of all the possible places I could go, and of the money I will need to spend either way. Somewhere in the far east would have been my first choice, maybe Japan or Central China, but I cannot afford it for now. Another though was somewhere in South America, which, of course, I cannot afford it either. Maybe I'll go to Holland or Germany.
It's stressing the fact that I have to decide the soonest possible, or I'll not find low fares.

Agree the US is far safer. I travel mainly in the tribal areas when in Yemen, and it is definately not somewhere you should relax your guard. Plus pretty much everyone is armed and guns come out in arguments.
You find Bin Laden posters on the walls everywhere in cafes in the mountain villages also. Americans are not very safe there, and the people are not that friendly these days.
The fact that your personal views may differ widely from the actions of your government will not hold any water in an argument over politics, they will hold you culpable for the actions of your nation. Some of the propoganda these people swallow about the US and UK is astonishingly irritating. I had an AK shoved in my face there once in an argument with one of their 'MPs' (democracy there is not how we would understand it).
You have 3 passports?!
I wish I had some more, too (sigh).
Yes, I need two for non-US / EU travel so that I am not without one one when waiting on visas. Then I have a 'clean' one I use for the US to save the anal questioning at border control on why I have been to certain places.
The newest one has an RF tag in it, and a chip that stores biometric data. I find this rather Orwellian.

How about the Ukraine? Kiev is pretty cheap to get to, and if you make for the Crimea from there it's inexpensive and should have decent weather in April..

I really suck at giving tips, but I'll try: Zaragoza is nice, it has a nice historical centre (el casco viejo) with a catholic church (El Pilar) of those with the medieval style of architecture, which is very impressive (though I find impressive all catholic churches, so my opinion might not be very valid).
I liked a lot the river (rio Ebro), which is hopelessly dirty but I really liked it. There was also a park, which name I cannot recall.
For food, bars, etc, the typical you can find in Spain. I cannot think of any other useful information. (/I told you I suck).

In the South they grow it a bit like the Japanese grow tea, trimmed low like a privet hedge. This offers protection from wind blown sand.
In the north the crop is grown for Saudi tastes (larger leaves intact from the top shoots). as most of the crop there is smuggled over the border where it is illegal but commends more money. That part of Saudi used to be in Yemen, and the government has relaxed prosecution a little as they got fed up of arresting people constantly. They do not have to worry about sand damage in teh mountains, but the plots are smaller as soil is scarce as is water so tall crops make more sense.
Cool.
The locals are fine to kidnapees aparantly (I have never been kidnapped there or anywhere else) but Islamism is on the rise, and if you ended up with Islamists you could be in for a very rough ride. Picture 1 is your typical tribal warlord, this is in the South where I was advising him on his mango plantations. He had told me on my previous visit he would shoot me if the treatment had not worked (it had so I never got to test it). I got into a bit of a heated argument with this one, and ended up with his bodyguards pointing guns at me.
Picture 2 is some typical terraced farming in the mountains around Taiz.
I have not been to Columbia myself, but will most likely be going there later this year as I have trials there on cut flowers (most of the cut flowers in the US come from Columbia) which is a big and lucrative market for my pesticide. The main places where flowers are grown are Columbia / Ecuador, Holland, and Kenya / Tanzania / Ethiopia.
I will also be going to Kenya and Tanzania this year. I had to cancel a trip to Kenya recently owing to the violence there. A lot of the worst problems were in the region where the flower production is, it was a pain as it ruined a couple of trials I had going on there and I have to do them elsewhere now.
It could take years for the industry to recover there as it prevented roses being shipped for Valentines day which is half the annual income, plus a lot of the workers died or dissapeared from the area and have not returned so labour is now scarce. I will be going to a trade fair in Nairobi in November anyway, and head on to Tanzania by road.
As for insurance, my company has me down for about $3m key man insurance which covers kidnapping as long as I don't ignore UK foreign office advice (which I do fairly regularly). There are places I would avoid though, Iraq for instance (with the exception of the Kurdish parts). I have just started trading there again after a five year absence (I used to do business there before the war) but I am trading through Syria and Jordan for the time being.

I'm planning to go to Tanzania and Zanzibar this summer so if you go there before June or July me know how it was.
I knew a couple who were in Kenya when all the political trouble was in full swing and they said they didn't really have any problems. Most of the disorder was in poorer areas they avoided. They were careful obviously and they were with a tour company for some time (for game parks) but for anyone thinking of going they said not cancel plans because of the recent turmoil.
As to danger in Yemen. . . I doubt we'll have any problems. The people we spoke to here (in the UAE) about it said not to go north or too far east of Sana'a without a guide/escort but anywhere else was pretty safe. They also said it was the only country they'd ever been to where random people on the street routinely welcomed them to Yemen. We'll see. Almost ready to go, one week exactly. . .

I'll be in south central Montana soon. So, besides it being beautiful scenery and being prepared for the surprise summer snow shower (like last week), I'm interested in anything notable that I should see or do.
I really don't have clothes for outdoors things. This is a sign of working too much.

I don't know about other schools, but at the other UW (Washington), guests can get temporary wifi access even if they aren't affiliated with the school. Check at the front desk of a campus library.

Whereabouts in Indonesia are you going? I've been to Medan (Sumatra) and the surrounding region a fair few times when I was working with Ganoderma problems on Oil palms out there. The rainforest is beautiful, see it whilst it is still there as they can't clear it fast enough to produce biofuel for the USA.
If you are lucky you will see the worlds largest flower, although it smells like rotting meat. I have also travelled around Borneo a lot, I prefer Borneo but the part I go to is in Malaysia (was British North Borneo).

I'm going to be in Southern Maryland from the 18th until the 26th. I guess that would be an hour or so from DC.
I would love to meet up with people (there are people nearby, right?) but I'm not sure how much transportation I will have. I'm hoping to go to DC by myself for a day, but we'll see how that works...

I'm actually going to call my travel agent tomorrow morning, (err, few more hours) to try and hot foot it out tomorrow, lickety splits, upgrade seats permitting.
Also, you have me mistaken for someone more sociable, my wife went to the MBTI meetup - alone.
I've had enough of Federal way and RSA's piece of shit software, this town certainly earns me no real life rep points like it once did when I owned a bank.

I just heard that I'm going to Harrogate in the UK and Munster in Germany at the beginning of January (instead of Manhattan, NY - which will be later in the month).
Hopefully I will get time to breathe at each location, but I doubt it.
I will be in disguise in Germany to blend in with the locals.

So I guess you plan to bring a flat cap, whippet and a copy of pigeon fanciers monthly to Harrogate then. Oh and some mothballs for your wallet lest the lack of use get to it whilst in Yorkshire.

I'll be in LA for about 5 nights at the end of October - early November. I don't know what there is to do in LA and I'm not really that excited to see Hollywood Boulevard or get shot or whatever people go to LA for. Urrr, they're not exactly next door.
Depends on what you like to do. Too late in the year for a concert at Red Rocks and way too early for skiing. Still, you should have plenty of warm weather. If you can get up into the mountains, it'll be a bit past their prime but you can see the aspens after changing colors, take a bike ride and/or trail hike, maybe go river rafting.
Some great bars in LoDo. Sporting events are fun (Pepsi Ctr, Invesco, Coors Field). There's gambling in Blackhawk in the foothills outside of Denver. You can take a shuttle bus. The food is hideous but the spectacle that is Casa Bonita (http://www.casabonitadenver.com/), should not be missed.

If you like Ginsberg, there's always Colfax Avenue. Depending on specific location and time, you may actually find some angel-headed hipsters. I should be in Estes Park for the entire month of October if you're up for some coffee and chitchat.
Also, I'm planning to move to Bangkok in November, and would love to find someone already over there to keep me from wandering down the wrong street.
